AIBU - the Green party has become a racist organisation?

Twiglets1 · Yesterday 19:35

The Green Party of England and Wales has been declared a racist organisation by the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

The Jewish body, which is the largest in the UK, was responding to the "Zionism is racism" policy motion passed at the Green Party's conference earlier this month.

Board of Deputies president Phil Rosenberg said a vote passed by 118 votes to one to declare that the Greens had, "by adopting an antisemitic platform, become a racist party".

I agree with this assessment but AIBU?

There are various strands, but even political zionism was built on the revival of Jewish identity and survival through ages of persecution.

Yes, thanks, that is understandable and especially following WW2. I think that intellectually it was hoped to establish a binational Arab-Jewish state in Palestine.

Johnathon Porritt has some niche views.

He openly supports the designated terrorist group Palestine Action and has been arrested several times.

No surprises there. The language he uses takes the usual route. He recognises the right to self determination but then reduces that down to ethno religious selfishness rather than literal survival. Pure antisemitism and the gaslighting continues.

Yes and what's always ignored is that Hitler's regime against Jews was preceded by over 3000 years' old worth of persecution.

And what is the name of the belief system that justifies the expulsion of Palestinians from their land?

Pretty sure a far few people would say Islam as the Quran states the land belongs to the Jews

However this isn't a religious debate so not sure where you are going with this question

Neverstopwondering · Yesterday 23:25

LuckyHazelFox · Yesterday 22:44

Why does zionism keep being reduced to an ideology of the political kind? That's really convenient.

Think you answered your own question there

Because it is convenient for people with very little understanding of the conflict and those wanting to demonise the majority of Jewish people

I actually find it offensive and lazy to say the least

WarmHiker · Yesterday 23:28

The Palestinian cause has been hijacked by Marxists who just need a way of expressing their hatred of jews. They don’t care about Palestine of the people there. Not one jot. They just needed a bandwagon to jump on.

Now will those who oppose the basic idea that Zionism in its current form is racism please explain to me, a Bear with a Small Brain why the current behaviour of the State of Israel is OK.

In particular the treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank.

I would also point out that I have visited two states that no longer exist - the USSR & Czechoslovakia, one that had just ceased to exist - the DDR and DW had been to what was then Yugoslavia so the idea that any state has a God Given right to exist is clearly not sustainable.

Finally if you do want the State of Israel to continue existing do you think that its current behaviour is helping its long term survival, if so please explain.

Oh and a 'Security Zone' in the Lebanon is what most people would call an invasion again if this is OK, please explain why

Ignorance is bliss. But I can’t believe you came here to brag about visiting colonial projects such as the USSR, only to use their demise as an argument against the existence of sovereign states. The USSR, alongside literal nazists, was fond of calling Israel colonial and racist. You must be proud of yourself for parroting the arguments of a Nazi officer.

Also, what do you think about Ireland? Should the British Isles be one country? I have nothing against the Irish, but this ethnic state is so racist. They believe they have the right to their own religion and culture, and they killed British soldiers and civilians in the process. they’re called the British Isles, not the Irish Isles! The clue is in the name! Who needs so many countries?

Marxists and Antifa love a bit of Jew bashing. They are the same who think women are an easy target because they dare to stand fast towards biological reasoning when it comes to gender. Quite a strange cult of people who really believe in their own self importance.

The treatment and attitude towards the voices of Jews and women are an excellent way to judge a political movement

Exactly. They are still the good guys though, let's not forget.

Yet complainants of Reform are fans of the racist Greens. You have to wonder how these hypocrites keep up with their dual standards.

I always used to support the Green Party. But it’s a travesty these days. Antisemitic, deeply misogynistic, dictatorial, with long-standing dedicated members being forced out if they don’t bow to the latest mad policy …

It’s a disgrace, when the need for a strong and committed environmentalist party has never been greater.

If someone started a real environmentalist party, like the Green Party used to be in its earlier stages, I would join immediately.

I just don’t get it. Never have. I’ve been an adult for 35 years and never understood what’s wrong with nuclear. Low co2, France went in hard on nuclear many years ago when building it was cheap and they’ve had many years of cheap, clean, reliable energy.

You NEED a back up for renewables for when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow. Would the Greens rather we continued with gas? The likes of Germany and Poland use coal. Or clean nuclear?

our current energy policy is madness. We’re trying to use 100% wind / solar but need to be able to provide back up. Hence the hyper expensive grid upgrades / storage to try to facilitate this. And growth is stalling because NOBODY wants to best their business in a country with the most expensive energy on the planet.

I think the Greens are so thick they got nuclear power mixed up with nuclear weapons. It’s the only explanation.

Must be hard for genuine environmentalists to know where to go politically now.

Lots of politically homeless people around. It’s an opportunity actually for the Lib Dem’s to increase their share of the vote if they focus more on environmental issues. Doesn’t seem like Burnham is interested in steering Labour in that direction.

They are not racist. They are against a racist political ideology that discriminates against Palestinian people. That is all.

If that’s all, why did an amendment fail that sought to protect Jewish members from being disciplined or expelled “for expressing views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members”?

For example, for expressing support for a binational state or a two-state solution.

Should Jewish Greens be disciplined for these things?

Good point. Even Zack Polanski ( pre the vote) said he thought it should be amended to specify that it should not be used to discipline Jewish members attending synagogues that consider themselves Zionist.

He also told BBC Breakfast he disagrees with the Green party of England and Wales deciding that there should be a single state because “I think that’s up to the Israelis and the Palestinians”.

The motion as passed is so extreme that Polanski says he wouldn’t have voted for it in its current form.

I do not think it makes them a racist party. Several antiZionist jews in the Green Party were for the Zionism is racism policy in principle. The problem was in the details of the policy which made it antisemitic. They are currently an antisemitic party.

I would not say racist party because that glosses over their direct antipathy towards jews as their particular target.

My concern is how the ‘zionism is racism’ policy will play out.

Zionism is not illegal, and Israel is an internationally recognised state. Supporting its continued existence does not automatically make someone racist.

By treating Zionism as inherently racist, the party risks conflating a broad range of beliefs with racial prejudice. For many Jewish people, the connection with Israel is is intertwined with their religious traditions, cultural identity, history and sense of collective belonging.

The green party rejection of an explicit safeguard for Jewish members' religious and communal affiliations is really concerning. Without clear rules defining what constitutes misconduct, ordinary Jewish practices, synagogue membership or community involvement could potentially be interpreted as evidence of Zionism and used to justify accusations or disciplinary action.

My concern extends beyond the Green Party. If other political parties, councils and public bodies adopt similar definitions, this could normalise the exclusion of Jewish people from public life unless they distance themselves from Israel or parts of their own identity, culture and religion. Jewish people could become subject to a routine ‘purity’ test.

History shows that discrimination can expand incrementally when a group's identity or affiliations become grounds for suspicion.
