To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

Look up a healthy diet looks like: NHS/Mediterranean diet etc. The more varied the diet the better health you have. A meat heavy diet is very bad. You only need a small amount of fish/meat to keep you healthy.

I’m not exactly gorging on sausages and bacon? It’s lean chicken breasts and lean beef

I probably wouldn’t have pie and stew in the same day. Why does he mean , too many hot meals ?

Seaitoverthere · 25/10/2026 16:49

jennyhumphreyseyeliner · 25/10/2026 16:38

I didn’t say I think it’s the healthiest ever. But some of the comments have been unnecessarily harsh!

Please ignore them. Some people take great delight in being the font of all wisdom on food related matters. The fact others are equally as sure they are right with a different set of eating criteria is lost on them. It has been this way forever on MN. I remember when the weight loss topic was introduced. If you had mentioned WLI another load of people would have gone all out about that.

Please take from this that you are doing amazingly and your DH is deliberately attempting to undermine your confidence. Focus on those posts that are useful and ignore the rest 😊

And 0.75g per kg bodyweight isn’t enough for a) someone lifting and trying to lose body fat and b) sub optimal for perimenpausal and menopausal women.

Medicsl ‘advice’ is shot through with poor advice for women because up until very recently the ‘advice’ was based on the male model and research conducted in men. We are not the same

For years the NHS told women their ferratin levels were ‘normal’ based on egregious bollocks caused by researchers creating baselines and failing to think critically when looking at blood lab values in females. The believed that the women they were testing had ‘normal’ levels when in fact they were deficient - it never occurred to the bozos to think that women bleed every single month - and so they simply thought women had less ferratin than men as standard. THIS left generations of women feeling like utter shit abc bringvyokc it wasn’t because of their ferratin levels.

I think.it looks like good filling food for the chillier days. I don't eat meat or like any diet food ( low fat anything ) so would go for different choices. But the point is it is obviously working for you OP diet / weight loss wise and that is all that matters.
As ever am amazed by the knowledge and attention to detail of the diet and nutrition mumsnetters. I am incredibly lazy in comparison and wing it through the days ( especially work ones ) with my peanut butter sandwiches, apples and coffee based diet. 😕😳

If OP is doing any kind of endurance exercise then she will need carbs. This low-carb bollocks doesn’t work for people who are active. I have to eat a lot of carbs! I specifically target carbs for breakfast so I can then do my long runs without collapsing halfway through.

Just carry on with what you’re doing, OP.

OP you are very self assertive on here. I hope you are similarly with your DH. He should be cheering you on not moaning about what your doing whilst sipping manshakes

Meat and potatoes for both lunch and dinner is a bit much but otherwise fine. Just needs a a 40 min nature walk added to become a good day.

she's going to the gym....

Illbethereinaminute · 25/10/2026 17:03

I think it sounds great and at the end of the day if it works for you then it doesn't matter what other people think.

I eat a carb heavy diet by some people's standards, I have some form of carbs at every meal but it works for me. I lift 3 times a week and I'm trying to restart running 3 days a week and doing one spin class until my runs get longer. When I was doing long runs and doing half marathons I ate a shit ton of carbs because I needed them for energy.

There is no point in me eating a salad for example because I hate salad so I plan my lunches around stuff I like and that are easy to eat at work.

I also have sweeteners in my coffee, one pepsi max a day and eat biltong so I'm never going to please the anti UPF groups but it works for me.

The reason I struggle to lose weight is my fondness for cheese, chocolate, wine and just generally overeating. If I plan my meals according to my calorie needs I lose weight (even drinking wine, just less of it!)

There will always be people telling you you are doing it wrong either out of spite, their own issues or just sheer ignorance. I've been working with a fitness and nutrition coach and she says life isn't perfect, you will have days where you overconsume or slob about but it's long term that matters.

WildStorm · 25/10/2026 17:03

@jennyhumphreyseyeliner well done!!

Theres no perfect diet, one that works for everyone nor is there an agreement that the Mediterranean diet is the best in the world when you see how health Japanese and Chinese people are on their traditional, normal diets.

As at least one PP said, you’re on a weight loss journey so you need more protein to avoid loosing muscle mass.

Your dh though 😳😳
I really dint think he is in a place to make any comment about anyone’s diet.

Chronicallyknackered · 25/10/2026 17:05

Well done OP on your impressive loss !

All these competitive undereaters don't have a clue what is needed to sustain a consistent weight loss. Ive lost 64lbs in 1.5yrs, going from over 15st to under 11.
Focus was on protien and fibre, increasing steps and gym 3 times a week. The protien is essential for keeping you full and helping resist the less healthy snacks
Started off eating 2200 calories a day and gradually reduced to 1900.
To sustain the 15st I was eating close to 3500 calories a day!

Illbethereinaminute · 25/10/2026 17:05

Also....

I walk 4 miles a day for the school run, I'm on my feet at work for 5.5 hours,.general pottering at home doing house jobs, eating in a deficit, gym 3 days a week, cardio 3-4 times a week and I still get people telling me I'm lazy and need to do more despite averaging 20,000 steps a day before I've even been for a run...

jennyhumphreyseyeliner · 25/10/2026 14:56

Nope! It’ll be hard for other things, it freezes well so I’ll split it up and save some for some sausage rolls closer to Christmas, plus use another portion in the week

I meant to put chicken pie lol - God knows what happened with the auto correct 😂

godmum56 · 25/10/2026 17:09

OP don't change your diet, change your partner

Terfedout · 25/10/2026 17:13

Its a bit too heavy and carby for me. I've successfully lost weight recently and I would not be able to eat all that and lose. I also exercise a lot.

But this is you, not me. And i do tend to lean towards slightly undereating so am probably not the best judge! If it works for you, then go for it and ignore what people say 😊 best of luck with your weight loss.

Bepo77 · 25/10/2026 17:15

Well done you!! Ignore the people going on about how it's "too much", they're probably following threads like these for not great reasons.

Question because I'm curious - why so much protein? Isn't the recommendation for women like 40-60? Why 137?

Merkins · 25/10/2026 17:17

jennyhumphreyseyeliner · 25/10/2026 15:14

I shouldn’t have to repeatedly provide these breakdowns. I don’t think any of this is a really small portion?

I don’t know if anyone has pointed this out, but to get accurate calories you need to be putting cooked chicken/beef etc. in your app because they have more calories than raw. You may be underestimating by 3-400 calories on the pie and stew alone. That said, if this diet works for you then who cares? 130lb lost is in an incredible achievement 🙌

It’s higher when you’re in a calorie deficit and you’re trying to maintain muscle mass! It’s also really important to prevent hair loss

He’s become a “gym bro” and I’d say 75% of his diet is processed protein shakes

And your diet is way better than his so he can pipe down! I've just read your note on your weight loss. That's very impressive. Well done!

He says it’s too many carbs and too many hot meals.

What the hell does the temperature of the food have to do with anything?
Lots of people like hot meals in the winter.

squarecrow · 25/10/2026 17:23

I think your meals sound fine and I believe you about the calories etc.

I don’t understand why you are with someone who negs you about what you eat - especially if you are losing so much weight and have been doing so well for so long. He should be full of praise.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/10/2026 17:24

"How is yoghurt not real food? 😂"

It's really good for you!

You only need to do that if you’re not intending on eating the entire portion you’ve weighed and even then it doesn’t really matter unless you’re intending on throwing the rest of what you don’t eat once cooked, away (and why would you?)

If you enter and 800g raw breast o leg chicken into the count and you eat all of that once cooked, it’s still the same macros.

obvs if the chicken is already cooked and you’re weighing it then you need to enter it as cooked.

'weight loss journey'?

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 25/10/2026 17:27

Gobbledegoo · 25/10/2026 16:33

You should be having a home made vegetable soup for lunch. Onions, carrots, swede, leeks, lots of variety veg but no leaf veg, include lagumes, and make for 5 days. No meat at lunch or breakfast. Fish or 2oz of meat in the evening plus more varieties of veg. Very small amount of carbs in the morning with full fat milk and BUTTER on bread/toast. Use only natural food. Never ever use processed food, i.e. types of oil, spread, fruit yougherts.

WHYYYYYYYYY
