To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

Some of them add additives to replace the texture and flavour of the missing fat.

Sainsbury’s don’t.

I don't think it's bad but I suspect you've fallen into the trap of looking at your macronutrients and missing the actual nutrition of what you're eating. You haven't listed what veg you're having but assuming a wide variety and plenty of it then I think you're OK. I certainly wouldn't be taking any advice from someone who willingly eats Huel!

The baseline is five, anything over is a bonus. We used to eat seasonally, there wasn't that much variety. People in many countries don't have the availability of variety, they are in good health.
OP, thanks for this thread. I've been cooking and eating real food and going high protein. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying what I eat, yet still losing 2/3 lb a week on 1600 calories a day. I was a bit sad about not having my usual pie on New Years Day, but now think I could make one that will calorie count in. Luckily I like carrot and swede mash with pie, plus other side veg.
The WLI should have taught people that it is about calories. But we need to preserve muscle and protect our bones. You aren't doing that on salads and skipping meals.
Tell your DP that the latest government advice is to eat hot food. Gym bro's don't eat well, but being men, they can get away with it. They need to butt out of women's nutrition, we aren't the same.

This isn’t completely true. 5 is the public health message baseline but evidence shows that around 9 is optimal (some papers say 7-10).

PH messaging thought that would outface people and make them not even try so they reduced the target to 5. Most adults in the UK only get 2-3 so 6 is great.

I do usually try to get more variation (usually through a soup where I add lots of hidden veggies) but just couldn’t be bothered today 😂 I take multivitamins as well just to be triply safe

Next time you’re in the supermarket go and take yourself to the Greek yogurts - you’ll usually find 10%, 5% and 0% fat…have a quick look at the ingredients for all three.

I just googled actually, when OP posted about 0%. Same as full fat in terms of ingredients but made with skimmed milk. I didn’t think it was possible to set yogurt without milk fats, and indeed at home you’d need to add milk powder to skimmed milk to make yogurt culture. No clue what the industrial process does, but the ingredients are just 0% milk and bacteria/cultures. I don’t see the point of Greek yogurt if it’s not full fat 😂 so won’t be taking you up on your suggestion. Thanks though!

CockSpadget · 25/10/2026 16:30

Well he’s basically teaching his grandma how to suck eggs if he’s telling someone who’s lost 9 stone how to eat. You clearly know what you’re doing, and to all the “bird like” eaters on here, OP was 26stone, volume eating works amazingly well for a lot of people who start larger on their weight loss journeys, being hungry is a sure fire way to failure.

The point is lower calories for volume. I could sit and eat a full 1kg tub of Odysea full fat in one sitting if I wanted, but I don’t want to pile the weight back on!

Sounds perfect, OP. Are you following the Filling Meals recipe books by Lindsay Wilson? Your meals feel very similar!

Gobbledegoo · 25/10/2026 16:33

You should be having a home made vegetable soup for lunch. Onions, carrots, swede, leeks, lots of variety veg but no leaf veg, include lagumes, and make for 5 days. No meat at lunch or breakfast. Fish or 2oz of meat in the evening plus more varieties of veg. Very small amount of carbs in the morning with full fat milk and BUTTER on bread/toast. Use only natural food. Never ever use processed food, i.e. types of oil, spread, fruit yougherts.

the thing is....The THING is....that this is not about the OP's diet but about her asshat partner.

Nothing as deliberately obtuse as a certain MN demographic asked for input into someone’s diet…..

Are you just making up your own rules for healthy eating? I'm not sure what the basis for any of this is.

The point is if you’re losing weight and wanting to preserve muscle you heave to sacrifice fats so that you can still lose weight by calorie restriction and manage to eat enough protein. 200g of 0% Greek yogurt only has around 115 calories and 20g of protein, in 10% fat this changes drastically to 260 calories and only 12g of protein, or the 0% consists of approx 40% protein and the 10% only 19% protein.

Big difference when you’re trying to lose weight and preserve muscle.

I didn’t say I think it’s the healthiest ever. But some of the comments have been unnecessarily harsh!

Vitamin tablets etc are only good for cleaning the toilet. If you have a very varied diet you do not need them. I am an oldie and eat and cook lots of natural stuff. Always hated processed fats/oils.

So I should stop taking the ferratin then for my ferratin levels of 13 (and I eat an excellent diet)?

moominontherun · 25/10/2026 16:42

If OP is doing any kind of endurance exercise then she will need carbs. This low-carb bollocks doesn’t work for people who are active. I have to eat a lot of carbs! I specifically target carbs for breakfast so I can then do my long runs without collapsing halfway through.

Just carry on with what you’re doing, OP.

I think at this time of year they’re more placebo than anything else, but as someone who really struggles in the winter I’ll take it 😂

Look up a healthy diet looks like: NHS/Mediterranean diet etc. The more varied the diet the better health you have. A meat heavy diet is very bad. You only need a small amount of fish/meat to keep you healthy.
