To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

Sounds fine. I like the pie, potatoes and the beef. Good to have lots of veg with both. Not mad on oats with protein powder though. That to me sounds horrid. But it's not 'unhealthy'.

The trick is to use oat “flour” (ready blended oats) to give it more of a cake like texture. It feels like eating cake for breakfast 😭

He says it’s too many carbs and too many hot meals.

How does the temperature of the food affect the calorific value exactly?

I’ve shown my calorie count? How is it not real food? All I’ve done is add a scoop of protein powder to my baked oats (because I’d much rather supplement protein than anything else)

Popchips, protein powder, lighter pastry, lighter yogurt: that’s not real food to me. I would eat the real thing, just less of it (and no protein powder at all; popchips id just bake some pita bread with spices and olive oil). But that’s me! You put whatever you want in your body! I’m also not querying your maths or calories (too boring), I’m just saying that for your stated meals to add up to 1500cals, the portions would be smaller than I’d need to get through the day!

the thing is....The THING is....that this is not about the OP's diet but about her asshat partner.

really great! And satiating

but you will consume 6 portions of different fruit and veg in a day rather than 8 - still amazing though.

They are meant to be different.

Edited

The baseline is five, anything over is a bonus. We used to eat seasonally, there wasn't that much variety. People in many countries don't have the availability of variety, they are in good health.
OP, thanks for this thread. I've been cooking and eating real food and going high protein. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying what I eat, yet still losing 2/3 lb a week on 1600 calories a day. I was a bit sad about not having my usual pie on New Years Day, but now think I could make one that will calorie count in. Luckily I like carrot and swede mash with pie, plus other side veg.
The WLI should have taught people that it is about calories. But we need to preserve muscle and protect our bones. You aren't doing that on salads and skipping meals.
Tell your DP that the latest government advice is to eat hot food. Gym bro's don't eat well, but being men, they can get away with it. They need to butt out of women's nutrition, we aren't the same.

Didn’t you say lighter yogurt? That normally has stuff added to replace the fat.

It’s 0% Greek yoghurt. Nothing added.

I think it’s a lot of carbs - pastry and potatoes for lunch. Popchips v processed and not so high on fruit
and veg. Not terrible. I’d add a salad to lunch or
broccoli instead of potatoes

BugJuice · 25/10/2026 16:19

ABOOO · 25/10/2026 15:34

I said it's a lot of food.

If I needed to lose weight, I'd probably skip the breakfast and snacks.

It's not always about the calories, and more about why you need so much volume.

Why though?

They don't add stuff? They use lower fat milk to make it!

If you’ve lost 9 stone then l think it’s safe to say you’re doing something right! If he doesn’t like the menu, then he can do the meal planning and cooking then

I think it’s healthy and fine, don’t get me wrong, I just can’t fathom how your dinner is less than 400 cals and the smallest meal of the day, your portions must be very small indeed,

BugJuice · 25/10/2026 16:21

patooties · 25/10/2026 16:02

I’d not eat a pie with potatoes and then stew. I’d defo not eat the breakfast.

not sure what type of journey you’re on but it wouldn’t be one that suited me.

One where she’s lost a fantastic amount of weight while staying fit and healthy! Sounds like good journey to me 👍

MN loves nothing more than a diet/food thread to pick apart and criticise every minute detail. If it is working for you, what anyone here thinks is irrelevant. It is certainly healthier than Huel on repeat, and that is really where the problem lies, a critical and unsupportive partner who thinks he is always right.

Clearingaspace · 25/10/2026 16:23

jennyhumphreyseyeliner · 25/10/2026 15:26

Why is it odd and why would I lie?

I started at 26 stone, I’ve lost 9 stone over the last two and a half years or so. I go to the gym 5 days a week before work, stay hydrated and at the weekends prioritise getting out and about. I hit 10k steps everyday and can often have lower calorie days too!

You are doing amazing, well done.

Your dh sounds annoying, but it is probably still helpful that you are both losing weight by the sound of it as not much temptation for you in huel drinks! Keep going and doing what works for you.

I think the only possible side effect of eating carbs at all your meals is that you need to keep tracking and you need to keep exercising for it to work, otherwise weight will likely slooowly creep back on if not. If at any point you can’t do the exercise and tracking it will probably help to do those little tweaks people mention like skipping pie crust and chocolate and adding more veg. Sadly I am speaking as someone who was good at losing weight then gaining it all back again - less good at the losing part now i am approaching menopause.

well done 9 stone and over 2 years of losing weight is phenomenal

I wouldn't have two meals with meat and potatoes in them in one day - I would have something lighter for lunch. But it's your day, so do it your way!

Why not?

Some of them add additives to replace the texture and flavour of the missing fat.

Oh if it's like cake then that's another story! 😁 I actually do regularly have cake for all meals! Had bakewell tart with thick cream today for lunch. 😍

Next time you’re in the supermarket go and take yourself to the Greek yogurts - you’ll usually find 10%, 5% and 0% fat…have a quick look at the ingredients for all three.

Error404FucksNotFound · 25/10/2026 16:25

People are crazy. You've lost 9 actual stone doing exactly what you're doing and you've got folks telling you it's all wrong.
also, your partner is a dick.
