To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

Cauliflower cheese instead of potatoes? So MORE fat and calories? Why?

Actually, if you used skimmed milk, half fat cheddar (Tescos creamfields is good and melts well) and cornflour as your thickener, cauliflower cheese has about the same calories as potatoes (boiled) and you get around 5g more protein.

It's not enough calories to do a working day on, since - less snacks - it is less that 2k. And probably not enough protein either. Better to join something like Weight Watchers or Slimming World and devise a balanced diet that can be stuck to - albeit weight loss is slower - than do this. Also, going to the gym before breakfast sounds like a real hassle unless it is right next door.

The gym is on my way to work. It’s easier for me to go in the morning than it is at night as I’ll just walk past it 🤣

You should be having a home made vegetable soup for lunch. Onions, carrots, swede, leeks, lots of variety veg but no leaf veg, include lagumes, and make for 5 days. No meat at lunch or breakfast. Fish or 2oz of meat in the evening plus more varieties of veg. Very small amount of carbs in the morning with full fat milk and BUTTER on bread/toast. Use only natural food. Never ever use processed food, i.e. types of oil, spread, fruit yougherts.

Why should she be doing anything of the sort?

As you have found OP, this is not the place to ask anything about diets. It just brings out the ill informed posters who spout nonsense about too many hot meals, too many potatoes, and a million other made up ideas about food. You seem to be doing great. Ignore your DP and ignore all the people in here who think they know what they are talking about. Mumsnet is full of people with disordered eating.

Agreed, but it is also why MN food threads are some of my favourite to read

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/10/2026 19:43

What kills me about this thread is so many people are saying "ooh too many big meals, too many potatoes" blah blah who seem to have missed the fact that the OP has lost almost TEN STONE eating this way!

If any of those posters have lost that sort of weight then I would listen to them, but they havent!

@jennyhumphreyseyeliner Tell your husband when he eats properly you will consider his opinion, until then he should keep his Huel hole shut!

Op can I ask for your fibre breakdown? It's an impressive amount for a day when I can't see any beans/seeds on the list? I've been increasing fibre but find it hard to get beyond 20-25g without adding beans or something

The oats have a lot, lots of veg and berries. Skin on potatoes for lunch, peas are good too!

But she hasn't said is this an OK day of eating, she said good. And she hasn't referred to any other days and diet, just this one, indicated in the title. I'm basing it on this day and this food. Potatoes twice isn't good, which was her question.

Why is potatoes twice not good? What is your reasoning for this statement?

rainbowunicorn · 25/10/2026 20:36

Jupitercore · 25/10/2026 18:47

I wouldn't have potatoes at lunch and have other veg instead, or maybe cauliflower cheese, burt not potatoes twice

Why?

EvieBB · 25/10/2026 22:44

jennyhumphreyseyeliner · 25/10/2026 14:41

He says it’s too many carbs and too many hot meals.

Too many hot meals?? Eh?

@Gobbledegoo as your name suggest - that's gobbledegook! OP there's nothing wrong with meat at breakfast or lunch!

MidnightMeltdown · 26/10/2026 00:05

It’s not terrible, but I agree that it’s very high carb, which isn’t great you’re trying to lose weight. Why would you have potatoes with a pie? The pie has pastry so you are having double carbs in that meal alone. I would have the pie with some sort of veg like broccoli instead.

Because she wants them? It’s obviously not hindering her weight loss

@jennyhumphreyseyeliner somewhat irritated by this thread tbh.

You are obviously, doing fantastically on your weight loss journey and are following a regimen that absolutely works for you. That, is all that's important.

I can only suggest that you could lose an instantaneous ~154 lbs if you shed... your partner!!

Are they jealous? Too much other attention?

Total support for you, bloody well done. 💪 😊

Yes all the competitive under eaters and Ano Bots are arguing over carbs etc when the REAL issue is OP’s negging, controlling, unpleasant partner!

The food count doesn’t bloody matter, this woman is being put down by the person who should be cheering her on. Can we focus back on that!

OP has asked whether this is a healthy diet. The answer is no imo.

How do you know it’s not hindering her weight loss?

BrickMaker · 26/10/2026 01:03

Seems fine to me, why is he so interested in what you eat? I mean personally I usually eat a keto bar for breakfast with coffee, an almond milk hot chocolate for a snack, one slice of high protein dark rye with 1/4 avocado and tin tuna in chilli oil for lunch, a vegetable soup for dinner and a sugar free dessert. That's what I eat 5 days a week, always the same. So you put a hell of a lot more effort in than me and most people and probably should be pretty proud of yourself for that. You clearly researched it and want to be healthy. I eat like an autistic child haha *well I am ASD but still....

Wrong.

She actually asked if it was a "decent day of eating".

And 3lbs per week loss eating real food with no fat jabs, I think it is clear that it isnt hindering her.

Lemieux7 · 26/10/2026 01:38

I wouldn’t eat this much carbs trying to lose weight but if it works for you that’s fine. Everyone’s bodies are different.

Your opinion is based on nothing but vibes, and she's lost NINE stone!!

SparkleHorse82 · 26/10/2026 04:46

It is quite carby but if you’re doing a lot of exercise and you’re not insulin resistant (eg outside perimenopause) then it’s ok.

when I’m being good/trying to lose weight I wouldn’t have pastry and potatoes on the same plate.

'being good' - see the idea that you shouldn't have double carbs is purely based on some idea of a 'good' meal as opposed to a 'naughty' one - ascribing morality to food rather than considering whether it's objectively meeting health goals. OP's days food meets all her macro targets and is within her calorie allowance so it's neither good nor bad morally, and it works for weight loss and health. Everyone who has posted saying it's too high carb is just going on vibes and it's ridiculous.

It’s what I was taught at university for a nutrition module but you’re right that it’s not currently what the NHS goes by - they now just say it should be from a variety of sources. Apologies OP, maybe that advice has been updated.

It never made sense anyway. Like your body has a timer that resets at midnight for when it extracts the nutrients? It doesn't do anything on a 24 hour basis. Gain weight, lose weight, extract nutrients - all of it is a matter of weeks to months, which is the only rational way to consider your diet.

Being good was stupid language, I accept.

But as some who experienced insulin resistance/GDM in pregnancy, this isn’t just vibes. Double carbs isn’t good for stable blood sugar which is supportive of weight loss goals

FiveShelties · 26/10/2026 05:28

Well done @jennyhumphreyseyeliner on your fantastic weight loss. Your day sounds lovely to me, I also love carbs.

The only time I gain weight, despite eating lots of carbs is when I add red wine and cheese into my day😂
