To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

If you have an 800g breast of chicken that’s raw and you mark it as cooked instead I guarantee you the calories will be more.

But on the Nutracheck app you would record it as raw and the calories would be completely accurate. It doesn't mean you then have to eat it raw. It just means that you need to record it correctly in whatever state you choose.

Of course 800g of cooked chicken is more calories. Think about how much water is lost in the cooking process.

But as long as you've weighed and recorded what you are eating accurately it doesn't matter at what point you've weighed it. If you are making a pie it's impractical to disassemble the cooked ingredients to weigh it after cooking, so you'd almost certainly be weighing raw ingredients.

Yes because as chicken cooks down it loses water etc. so 800g of cooked chicken will probably be about 1200g of raw! I cooked 327g of chicken (raw) the other day, it came out to 233g cooked. Nearly 100g gone

If the portions are hearty then I’m sure you’re underestimating. I would have a lighter lunch if I were on a weight loss journey.

The problem with a ‘lighter lunch’ is that it’s often something like a salad which is much higher calorie than you think and/or doesn’t fill you up so you end up snacking later in the day.

God the lack of education on posts here is so telling. I am going tk eat potatoes twice a day all next week in solidarity OP. And please can you tell us what you said to your twat of a husband about his pointless opinion?

Lifelover16 · 25/10/2026 18:42

I think it looks great. Dry healthy and filling. Keep your partners share for your meals tomorrow and let them make their own.

Actually, potatoes are very very good at curbing hunger for few calories.

Yes, I know. But sweet potatoes or butternut squash are just as good, for slightly lower calories, and much more nutritional value.

He says it’s too many carbs and too many hot meals.

It all sounds autumnal and warming, but I’d agree on the amount of carbs.

Jupitercore · 25/10/2026 18:47

I wouldn't have potatoes at lunch and have other veg instead, or maybe cauliflower cheese, burt not potatoes twice

Which meal would you substitute the cauliflower cheese into?

Lunch? Replace 110g of potatoes with 110g of cauliflower cheese, adding tons more calories?

I’m honestly really impressed 😂 I’ve never had it this good before.

Plus the stew will be repurposed when it’s gone all lovely and slow cooked and be used as a pie filling on one day, for another lower calorie/high protein lunch. I’d rather have three really hearty meals than loads of snacks to be honest

Same. I don't understand people who would prefer a salad. I'd definitely prefer the same calories hot and hearty. But we're all different.

I would have thought cauliflower cheese had lots more calories than potatoes which are fairly low calorie for how filing they are.

MakingPlans2025 · 25/10/2026 18:52

There js nothing wrong with carbs for a normal active human. There is nothing wrong with potatoes.

Yes so You track it as raw then you cook it then you eat it. Or you cook it, weigh it as cooked and eat it. The calorie totals will be the same . 100g chicken raw will be same calories as 72.3G cooked or whatever it would be. Jesus. This is almost as bad as the “muscle weighs more than fat” brigade.

Possibly, but you could have s little made with your cheese allowance, it depends how you make it tbh.

Jesus….

muscle DOES weigh more than fat - - DEPENDING ON YOUR METRICS.

And COOKED chicken will have more calories than RAW chicken - DEPENDING IN YOUR METRICS.

HOW you are measuring actually matters.

The original poster was technically righ but she was failing to understand that so long as you weighed it raw first it wouldn’t matter or make any difference once it was cooked since the recipe hadn’t changed

Potatoes are one of the most filling foods you can eat, especially for the calories. Cauliflower cheese is way more calorie dense

Cauliflower cheese instead of potatoes? So MORE fat and calories? Why?

What’s really frustrating is I’ve shown my food diary and I’m still being told I’m wrong 😂😂

As you have found OP, this is not the place to ask anything about diets. It just brings out the ill informed posters who spout nonsense about too many hot meals, too many potatoes, and a million other made up ideas about food. You seem to be doing great. Ignore your DP and ignore all the people in here who think they know what they are talking about. Mumsnet is full of people with disordered eating.

Grammarnut · 25/10/2026 19:31

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 25/10/2026 14:41

What’s their problem with it?

It's not enough calories to do a working day on, since - less snacks - it is less that 2k. And probably not enough protein either. Better to join something like Weight Watchers or Slimming World and devise a balanced diet that can be stuck to - albeit weight loss is slower - than do this. Also, going to the gym before breakfast sounds like a real hassle unless it is right next door.

Don't worry op, lots of MNetters are scared of carbs, where as the rest of us know they are important for a normal healthy body and potatoes in particular are satisfying and low cal
