UK at war within 1000 days

Wes Streeting has said Britain must be ready for war in 1,000 days. This combined with the advice to stockpile while you can is highly inflammatory and worrying. AIBU to think that if there is a specific threat he should be specific? If it's a nuclear threat then he should say. We are lucky to have access to what is effectively a bunker but what can you do if you live in a bedsit in the London borough of suburbia?

@XDownwiththissortofthingX The UK does not have any "borders" any prospective invasion force could "roll tanks across" to begin with, unless you are talking about maritime borders, in which case the vehicles in question would be ships and not tanks, or the UK's internal borders between the constituent nations.

I just provided you with the example of an amphibious assault, which would involve tanks rolling across the UK's borders, thanks.

No, you did not. You linked to the Wiki article on generalised Amphibious warfare, which has do direct relevance to Streeting's moronic statement.

Labour need to prioritise defence spending quickly

100%. All these types of threads stopped when the Russian data centre was destroyed. Now, they’re back with a vengeance.

So many over the last few days suggesting we stop supporting Ukraine in case Russia attacks us.

I really think MN need to police this as disinformation/ misinformation and propaganda is literally one of the ways we are being attacked by Russia.

This is the war. Right now

So many over the last few days suggesting we stop supporting Ukraine in case Russia attacks us

Yep.

I’d prefer they do this than go for headlines that just make the public jumpy.

At least Putin will stop the boats if he takes over.

I think we all know what flag you're flying.

The UK does have a land border.

Which changes absolutely nothing, because Russia is no more able to launch an amphibious occupation of Ireland than it is the UK itself, so no, they aren't going to be rolling tanks across that border either.

Who do you think is behind them ?

I assumed they meant AI!

Their latest posts should clear that up.

I think this is what they are priming us for isn’t it.

What a load of scaremongering nonsense. 🙄 I wish the Government would STFU. It's honestly getting on my tits now.

What an absolute disgrace to our forefathers who fought to liberate those under Nazi occupation!

They didn't fight to impose multi-culturalism on the UK or Europe. They fought to preserve Western Civilisation.

LillyPeacePlant · 25/10/2026 12:01

Why mention you have a bunker? That is a twat move. Start a panic inducing thread and then finish it with ‘oh but I don’t need to worry suckers!’

Redpaisley · 25/10/2026 12:02

Constantrunner · 25/10/2026 11:20

The threat is cyber hacking and cutting power and internet cables on the ocean bed.
So he means we have to be prepared for power and internet cuts. That's it. No need for any bunkers unless you have access to your own generator and satellite in there.

Power cuts in winters is worrying.

The greatest danger to national security in this country is already here and seemingly being continually welcomed with open arms

Yes, it's terrifying.

TemperanceWest · 25/10/2026 10:50

I think it is important to quote what he actually said:

"The gravest dangers of the 20th century are returning, armed with the technologies of the 21st. But the threat to Britain is not simply one of conventional warfare, or Russian tanks rolling across our borders. It is also the growing threat of state sponsored terrorism, sabotage and hostile acts designed to disrupt our lives, undermine our security and spread fear in our communities"...

"Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity. By 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win. This Government will make sure it is mission accomplished."

I don't think you will need that bunker.

Thank you.

These panic mongering threads have a Russian bot feel to them.

They didn't fight to impose multi-culturalism on the UK or Europe. They fought to preserve Western Civilisation.

That would have been news to the millions of colonial troops the UK relied upon in order to prevail in that conflict. How deliciously ironic, the "multi-culturalism" you are havering drivel about being the one thing that actually preserved "western civilisation".

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 12:04

During the darkest days of 1940, Churchill framed the fight against Nazi Germany not merely as a territorial war, but as a defence of Christian and Western civilisation against a "new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science".

"Russian tanks rolling across our borders".

Which borders are these then Wes? The famous Welsh border with Belarus?

The bit of the chunnell when you come out of the sea?

Bollocks. Russia and USA and perhaps having the channel saved us.

Lotsofsnacks · 25/10/2026 12:07

I hate all these MN panic posts! I think they are more worried about sophisticated cyber attacks than all out warfare. Politicians are very good at manipulating the public though. We’ve had these nuclear threats for years. Putin and Trump aren’t getting any younger, they won’t be around forever. We’ve got to keep our fingers crossed, that they’ll be replaced with far more peaceful, and understanding leaders.

TinselTeaCakes · 25/10/2026 12:08

The world feels like a scary place right now. Although i’m sure it did in the 80’s too, with the cold war, history repeats itself.

We are just stocking up on bottled water, and tinned food/pasta. Perhaps making a go bag, with medical supplies. Not that it would last long but the constant talk of being ‘prepared’ has really ramped up in the news lately and made me concerned.
