Do you have age-gap friendships?

Mummypie21 · 24/10/2026 11:26

This post is inspired by another post from a lady who was thinking of going clubbing with a group of women that were half her age. Does anyone have friends who are much younger or much older? I'm 42 and I have friends whose ages range from 27 to 57 (A big age gap but still within a 15 year gap from me). It doesn't really matter but just curious.

I'm 48 and have friends aged 26 and up.

RaininSummer · 24/10/2026 11:31

I'm 63 and have friends in their early forties through to eighties.

SpanThatWorld · 24/10/2026 11:31

60

I have always had older friends but, as I've got older, I've found that I am becoming the older friend

On Tuesday I'm having dinner with a couple aged 30&40.

Doodletown · 24/10/2026 11:32

No significantly younger friends, but lots much older.

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/10/2026 11:33

My oldest friend is 9 years older than me and my youngest is 9 years younger.

TigerRag · 24/10/2026 11:34

Not significantly younger but I'm 37 and have friends in their 70s

GoodkneeBadKnee · 24/10/2026 11:34

I have lots of friends who are 20+ years younger than me. I play a team sport which is how we met. I don't have many friends significantly older than me though.

Crushed23 · 24/10/2026 11:40

I’m 37. Oldest friend is 47, youngest is 28.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2026 11:42

Generally not, but I do have one friend my parents' age. The difference shows sometimes.
I've no interest in being friends with people more than five yeas younger, but am more flexible with the older limit.
It's a bit depressing when your friends start talking about retirement and you still have a long time to go though...

I do socialise with people of all ages at work and really appreciate that.

Vegetablespringrolls · 24/10/2026 11:43

I'm 44. My best friend is 86. My youngest friend is 28 I think.

Skybluecoat · 24/10/2026 11:55

I’m 61 and have friends who are significantly older. Three of them, very separate friendships from previous workplaces. They are mid seventies to late eighties.

I think I have always fostered these kinds of relationships because I have zero relationship with my abusive biological mother.

So they are kind of mum substitutes in a way. Funnily enough, two of them have no children.

OnlyGreenClothes · 24/10/2026 11:56

I have friends in their 70s and friends in their 30s. I'm 46.

Summersongroses · 24/10/2026 11:58

I am 50. I am in a scrabble group with 2 ladies I met on my allotment who are 79 and 82. We have been to the theatre, afternoon tea and Wisley together! We even have a WhatsApp group! They are young at heart. I am old at heart so we meet somewhere in the middle!

Squirrelblanket · 24/10/2026 11:59

I'm mid-40s and last night I was in the pub with a friend who is 78. I absolutely can't keep up with her and I'm suffering for it today. 😂

MerelyPlaying · 24/10/2026 12:02

Yes, I’m 66 and best friend is 49. We’ve been friends for more than 20 years.
Most of my other friends are 55-65 but I have some older friends.

graygoose · 24/10/2026 12:04

I’m 38 and I have friends in their early 30s and mid-late 20s. Mostly made through work, it’s a great equaliser in terms of friendships. My DP is also 12 years younger than me

PressedThistle · 24/10/2026 12:04

No, I'm 45 and all my friends are close to my age. Youngest is 36, oldest is 51. I don't think I would have much in common with people younger or older than that!

Yes, in both directions. I don’t think age matters at all. If you like someone and enjoy spending time with them, and they feel the same, then age isn’t relevant.

neilyoungismyhero · 24/10/2026 12:05

I'm in my early 70's and socialise at
gigs, shows and cinema with work colleagues whose ages range from. early 50's to 80. We like the same music and films that's all that matters.

ToffeePennie · 24/10/2026 12:05

Yes! I’m 36 and I have spent every Wednesday and Sunday and then every night this week with friends ranging from 16 up to 76. Kinda par for the course if you do am-drams though. Some I stay in touch with, others just for this show, but either way it’s a nice, comfortable group of lovely people, some of whom are my best mates, regardless of age!

Tryagain26 · 24/10/2026 12:08

I'm 70 and my friends range from 50 to 80. I don't go clubbing with them though! But they are all friends I've made at different stages of my life.

TallSturdyGirls · 24/10/2026 12:10

Im 50 and went out dancing all night last night with some of my best friends who range from 61 to 32. Age is just a number.

adviceatthislatestage · 24/10/2026 12:17

I am 59. My youngest friend is 35 (started saying hello at an exercise class. Then most of us went on fitness holiday and we bonded more that week).

My oldest is 89. She was a long standing friend of my late mum, but we rarely met as I was always working. As mum got older and more frail I began wfh (at mum’s) so I’d sit and chat with her and mum then.

We stayed in touch after mum died, and meet for coffee every couple of months or so and occasionally to her house.

SillyG · 24/10/2026 12:21

Im 53, one of my very best friends is 79.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 24/10/2026 12:27

Honestly no- in terms of close friends none more than a decade each way and most of the older ones are husbands of my same age friends. I’m early 50’s and oldest is probably 60 and youngest 42/3. However I'm defining friend as someone I would meet up with outside where we primarily know each other so not neighbours or people I see at the gym/ running club and chat to there. Although now I think about it one set of neighbours are 65/70 and I do see them socially so maybe they count.
