Do you have age-gap friendships?

Mummypie21 · 24/10/2026 11:26

This post is inspired by another post from a lady who was thinking of going clubbing with a group of women that were half her age. Does anyone have friends who are much younger or much older? I'm 42 and I have friends whose ages range from 27 to 57 (A big age gap but still within a 15 year gap from me). It doesn't really matter but just curious.

My close friends range from 60ish to 35 ish (I’m mid 40s). The age gap ones have been made through work. The others are similar age to me as they are from school/college/uni days.

My husband is a freemason. Very few are younger than him so he likes it when he can take me and not be the youngest there.

Mummypie21 · 24/10/2026 12:31

I use the term friend loosely as I included colleagues who I chat a lot with and WhatsApp outside of work. However, close friends are all within 10 years of my age.

I have about 10 close friends. I am early 60s . Youngest friend 30 and oldest 70 . Most of my friends are generally about my age .

thislittlelife · 24/10/2026 12:34

37, youngest friend is 36 and oldest 45... so not really. I think it's because I met them all through being at similar stages of life - being at school/uni, career starters, becoming parents, school mums.

No my friend ship group is within five years of me, I have acquaintances who are younger and older but I’d not classify them as my friends, more people I’m friendly with, I don’t socialise with them as such,

Ibiza lady I feel quite awkward about, and feel she’s shoe horned her way in there, as she desperately wanted to go,

mumofsennimaul · 24/10/2026 12:37

I’m 57, my closest friends are 55 and 27

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 24/10/2026 12:39

My best friend is 64, I'm 45.

Megsdaughter · 24/10/2026 12:41

My best friend is 45, while I am 65. Been friends for 25 years. Another close friend is 50. Then again another friend is 75 so age dosnt mean alot to me.

( DH is 9 years younger as well)

LastLeg1 · 24/10/2026 12:43

My youngest friend is 2 yrs younger than me. Oldest is 18 years older.

Fridaygin · 24/10/2026 12:54

Yep. One of my raving buddies was older than my mom.

I also have friends 10-15 years younger than me.

DH and I are friends with a couple of which the woman was originally his Saturday girl! But she’s a grown woman now and gets married soon. She is 20 years younger than me and 33 years younger than DH! But we’ve known each other a long time so always have loads of gossip to catch up on. We are all similar personalities which makes it work.
I have 2 friends who are 13/15 years older than me. I think it depends more on personalities and lifestyle than age.

Dweetfidilove · 24/10/2026 16:29

I have friends much younger amd much older. They bring a rich and varied range of experiences, and I've never selected friends based on age.

47 and my youngest friend is 23.

angelcake20 · 24/10/2026 16:45

All my friends are either from university or had kids at the same time so are relatively similar in age. I don’t think anyone is more than 5 years older or younger than me.

Freshrain · 24/10/2026 16:46

Yes, I'm early 60s and have 6 different friends who are in their 90s, and plenty more who are in their 80s.

I have friends of all ages. Obviously, the people in their 20s and 30s I am friends with, I haven't know as long / have the same amount of history with, simply because I've not known them as long.

This last Summer I've been to celebrations for 3x 30th, 1 wedding, 2 x 90th, 1 Ruby wedding (40 yrs) and 2 Golden Weddings (50 yrs), 1 engagement, 1 80th, and 1 18th birthday, and 1 Christening of a baby. I've just found another couple I'm friendly with have recently celebrated their 60th wedding, although they didn't have a party.

My dearest friend is 10 years older than me, and the friend I spend most time with, most regularly at the moment is 20 years older than me. A couple I see pretty often (because of something we do together about twice a month) are 30 years younger than me.

XenoBitch · 24/10/2026 17:00

I'm mid 40s. Youngest friend is 19. Oldest is early 70s.

No, I'm 45 and all my friends are close to my age. Youngest is 36, oldest is 51. I don't think I would have much in common with people younger or older than that!

I think 9 years is an age gap ? I’m 39, I don’t think k 30years old are close to my age. Maybe that’s just me though?
