Months of repeated arguments - how to break the cycle? Aibu to think feelings matter

I’m currently feeling very isolated and insane, please feel free to give me straight advice.

My partner is, in his words, emotionally unaware. He struggles a lot with anger. I’ve put up with a lot of property destruction, shouting, name calling and general nastiness because I understand where his anger comes from. Probably mistake number one.

On the other hand, I will avoid conflict like the plague. I hate shouting, I hate feeling like I’m letting someone down. I consider my words carefully, I’ll never insult someone. But I am a crier. I will cry if I am being screamed at or if someone is nasty to me. Trying to stop doing this.

There’s been around 4 months now of solid back to back arguments. All about similar things but with no resolution. He has spent a lot of money on his addiction, has turned down freelance jobs for further free time, he has spent shared money on items that he wanted without discussion, he’s loaned money off me for significant purchases and said this is what couples do.

I’m not perfect - I am sensitive and appreciate time together. I’m beginning to feel like a facilitator of pooor choices.

The pattern goes

  1. I bring something up (eg I feel like we’re passing ships, can we plan some time together?)
  2. I get told my attitude stinks - my tone is off
  3. He focuses on what he’s done “wrong again” - I’m a bad person/i never get anything right/all I think about is you/I do everything for you
  4. I try and explain that I am wanting more time
  5. He says I’m criticising him and that I’m saying he’s not enough
  6. He shouts, says he’s unheard
  7. I cry, shut down and just agree with him
  8. Next morning, pretend like nothing happened

I’ve had enough of this pattern. I am having trouble sleeping and eating because of the stress. I said to him last night after another argument the night before, we need to understand why we keep arguing, I feel sad we are not understanding each other - you said you don’t feel seen by me, tell me how you’re feeling.

Obviously the wrong thing to say. He got annoyed again saying he wants action, not to talk about feelings again. He told me that he feels unappreciated because I don’t praise him, he said I know I don’t do a lot of stuff for you, but even just saying it would be nice.

This was followed by more shouting when I said we might both be guilty of not voicing how we feel about each other. He said he doesn’t want to talk about my feelings, I’m saying fuck his feelings, and that this gets us nowhere.

He said I don’t need him, but he needs me. I said I don’t want to be needed, I’d like to feel wanted.

He told me a goal for me would be to walk away when he’s screaming at me and to not let him speak to me like that. He said it’s odd I sit and take it.

He said I need to work on my tone.

He said he will pay me more compliments - I’m unsure of why this would help.

I feel empty and anxious today. I just feel like I came to him and wanted to understand him but I’ve made it worse again. I do care about him. But I am exhausted.

Eye rolls, sighing, shouting, standing up to scream in my face. I’m so tired.

Am I the problem; how do you fix circular arguments? Should I just agree to goals?

OP, if a friend was so volatile and constantly put you down when you tried to talk about it, you wouldn't put up with it would you? You would have withdrawn from the friendship.

You know deep down that what you are going through is not a loving relationship and partnership. Your health is being damaged by being with this person.

So, you have to save yourself and need to start the process to permanently remove yourself from the situation.

Absobeautely · 23/10/2026 15:32

Your boyfriend is a violent abuser. He does it because he enjoys it, same as any other violent male.
A life of joy and peace is waiting for you, get the boyfriend dumped, and only ever date a man if he demonstrates that he can and will enhance and ease all aspects of life, and make it fun.

What is he addicted to? There are quite a lot of red flags here tbh...

BertieBotts · 23/10/2026 15:36

This just sounds like a really destructive cycle and neither of you are happy.

You deserve somebody who will take your feelings into account, who listens, who appreciates you, who wants you, who is adult enough not to "need" you.

I would ditch him. And go to therapy. In any order but on your own - couple's counselling probably isn't a great idea.

I just feel like my insistence about talking about feelings is a bit selfish? Maybe we just need action? Like I need XYZ, and the other person does it? I don’t know.

This is what he wants you to think, he's a manipulative narcissist, you are worth so much more. Leave him

He's emotionally abusive. I don't know what you mean about understanding where the anger comes from?

You're telling him what you need, he is shouting and destroying property and telling you its all your fault anyway, and you are believing him?

And you think that the answer is for you to repress your emotion and not cry?

OriginalSkang · 23/10/2026 15:39

You need to break the cycle by leaving this emotionally abusive relationship

Passusthepilla · 23/10/2026 15:56

I do brig up a lot of issues, I am sensitive. He says I never praise him and that’s true recently because I feel so let down by him. I said I don’t receive praise from you, and he said there you go again, making it about you. I don’t know how to have a conversation without responding to someone with that I’ve heard them, and then how I feel?

believe it or not I actually work in mental health!

How to break the cycle of living with back to back arguments with an aggressive violent arsehole bully?

Leave.

Just leave the violent, agressive, knobhead arsehole bully. Leave and don't look back.

something2say · 23/10/2026 16:00

You are not sensitive.
He is taking more than he is giving.

You bring up valid concerns. Why would you not?
You do not need to give him praise when he takes the piss out of you.

He should NOT take the piss, then do something nice - then you will praise him!

He doesn't want to hear your valid concerns.
And you are listening to him.

He wants you to shut up and put up with his poor treatment - bunking off work, shouting, arguing with you.

My husband listened to every complaint I have, and then starts working on it. I say, I don't like it when you do such and such - and he never does it again! I have to be careful I don't say too many things as he gets to work on everything I say...! Your bf on the other hand??? Why are you having to get upset with him?? he is shit and still shit.

Merryoldgoat · 23/10/2026 16:01

@Passusthepilla why are you still with him?

I don’t mean that in an accusatory way, I mean it as a genuine question - what keeps you there because he certainly doesn’t sound like he’s making you happy.

something2say · 23/10/2026 16:02

I would advise you to go quiet, just simply to stop the arguments.

There will be no winning with this guy. It is time to see that. He wants you to shut up and let him get on with living this way.

But it is not good enough. But you don't need another row tonight.

Can you see the unanimous replies that you're being abused?
You don't need to analyse your abuser or try to word things just right. Speak to women's aid.
Do you own the house? The police can remove him next time he gets aggressive. You don't have to keep living like this.

Alltheusefulitems · 23/10/2026 16:10

In a relationship that's good and healthy with mutual respect you cam bring up whatever issues you want to and won't be screamed and shouted at.

It's so easy for us all to say you need to end it but you're living it everyday and it's not always as simple as that however you do need to start making a plan to get out of the relationship, talk to your friends and family about what's going on and get their support and help. Those who love you don't want this for you!

MojoMoon · 23/10/2026 16:10

None of this is a normal, healthy relationship.

Most people do not live like this.

You do not need to live like this. You deserve to be treated with respect and care.
He does not respect you. He does not care about you. He does not love you.

You do not obliged to fix him even if you "know where the anger is coming from". In any case, you cannot fix him.

You must leave. That is the only good way for this cycle to end.

AgnesX · 23/10/2026 16:10

Four months later and you're no further forward. Cut your losses and start to arrange your departure. In whose name is your home?

Lots of MH workers have their own MH problems.
You won't be able to fix this and only feel worse the longer you stay. Please leave him.

Goinggreymammy · 23/10/2026 16:22

YABU to stay in this relationship

Bananalanacake · 23/10/2026 16:38

And what are his good points. As soon as a man destroyed any of my possessions I'd dump him immediately.

InterestedDad37 · 23/10/2026 16:59

You don't have to live in fear of an ignorant bully. Break the cycle.

ginasevern · 23/10/2026 17:32

@Passusthepilla So you're living with a male bully who shouts and swears at you, smashes things up and is nasty as fuck. And the icing on the cake - he's an addict! Wow OP, you've managed to find the whole package there. What do you mean you "understand" where is anger is coming from? This "understanding" only goes one way doesn't it. How do you break the cycle? Simple. You leave the useless (and probably dangerous) wanker before he destroys you one way or another.

What exactly does he want praising for?

did he put his cup in the dishwasher rather than leave it on top?

have you asked what he’s done worthy of praise
