Months of repeated arguments - how to break the cycle? Aibu to think feelings matter

I’m currently feeling very isolated and insane, please feel free to give me straight advice.

My partner is, in his words, emotionally unaware. He struggles a lot with anger. I’ve put up with a lot of property destruction, shouting, name calling and general nastiness because I understand where his anger comes from. Probably mistake number one.

On the other hand, I will avoid conflict like the plague. I hate shouting, I hate feeling like I’m letting someone down. I consider my words carefully, I’ll never insult someone. But I am a crier. I will cry if I am being screamed at or if someone is nasty to me. Trying to stop doing this.

There’s been around 4 months now of solid back to back arguments. All about similar things but with no resolution. He has spent a lot of money on his addiction, has turned down freelance jobs for further free time, he has spent shared money on items that he wanted without discussion, he’s loaned money off me for significant purchases and said this is what couples do.

I’m not perfect - I am sensitive and appreciate time together. I’m beginning to feel like a facilitator of pooor choices.

The pattern goes

  1. I bring something up (eg I feel like we’re passing ships, can we plan some time together?)
  2. I get told my attitude stinks - my tone is off
  3. He focuses on what he’s done “wrong again” - I’m a bad person/i never get anything right/all I think about is you/I do everything for you
  4. I try and explain that I am wanting more time
  5. He says I’m criticising him and that I’m saying he’s not enough
  6. He shouts, says he’s unheard
  7. I cry, shut down and just agree with him
  8. Next morning, pretend like nothing happened

I’ve had enough of this pattern. I am having trouble sleeping and eating because of the stress. I said to him last night after another argument the night before, we need to understand why we keep arguing, I feel sad we are not understanding each other - you said you don’t feel seen by me, tell me how you’re feeling.

Obviously the wrong thing to say. He got annoyed again saying he wants action, not to talk about feelings again. He told me that he feels unappreciated because I don’t praise him, he said I know I don’t do a lot of stuff for you, but even just saying it would be nice.

This was followed by more shouting when I said we might both be guilty of not voicing how we feel about each other. He said he doesn’t want to talk about my feelings, I’m saying fuck his feelings, and that this gets us nowhere.

He said I don’t need him, but he needs me. I said I don’t want to be needed, I’d like to feel wanted.

He told me a goal for me would be to walk away when he’s screaming at me and to not let him speak to me like that. He said it’s odd I sit and take it.

He said I need to work on my tone.

He said he will pay me more compliments - I’m unsure of why this would help.

I feel empty and anxious today. I just feel like I came to him and wanted to understand him but I’ve made it worse again. I do care about him. But I am exhausted.

Eye rolls, sighing, shouting, standing up to scream in my face. I’m so tired.

Am I the problem; how do you fix circular arguments? Should I just agree to goals?

OP he is abusive, lazy, selfish and it also sounds like he is an addict of some sort? Yanbu and there is nothing you can do to change his personality and behaviour. The only thing that's unreasonable is that you aren't planning on leaving. You deserve better than this.

outerspacepotato · 23/10/2026 14:48

How you break the cycle is leave. And make it permanent.

Sidebeforeself · 23/10/2026 14:52

I’m astounded why you want to spend more time with him in the first place. He’s a nasty ,freeloading addict.

Find your backbone and get rid.

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2026 14:52

Oh my goodness he’s abusing you mentally, emotionally and financially.

As others have said you break this cycle by ending this relationship. Get out of there before he gets tired of punching walls and starts punching you.

Retro12 · 23/10/2026 14:53

What a prince!

You need to leave him, he doesn't sound like he has one redeeming quality. What positive things does he bring to your life?

5128gap · 23/10/2026 15:08

If you want to understand why you keep arguing, I'll be plain.
Your partner is an addict with anger issues who is exploiting you to feed his addiction and provide him with a home and relationship.
You know this, but lack the self confidence to say so because you have learned you must appease those who abuse you in the hope of minimising the abuse. You keep this in, then cry because it has to get out.
Your abusive partner then turns this against you, framing himself as the victim.
Stay in this relationship with this man and this cycle will continue. His personality type creates yours. His actions create your responses.
You need to leave him.

AzureLurker · 23/10/2026 15:09

All of the above. You should not be supporting or minimising his behaviour at your own expense like this. You shouldn't have to pander to him to make it easier, and what get a few compliments? It sounds as if his clueless to your experience and feelings. That's not a good relationship.

Skybluecoat · 23/10/2026 15:11

You are being abused. You need to leave asap. 💐

Octavia64 · 23/10/2026 15:11

people who are used to expressing anger through shouting and throwing things/being physical aren’t great for people who avoid conflict.

sometimes two people who both shout manage ok because they both shout and get over it quickly, and that seems to be what he’s advising you to do.

i don’t think it would help you.

i used to be married to someone who expressed his anger through shouting and honestly I’m much happier away from him.

he’s now married to a Mexican lady who gives as good as she gets.

i don’t want to live like that.

Toomuchcoffeethismorning · 23/10/2026 15:14

OP obviously everyone reading that will think wtf that's no way to live and just leave the situation

In reality we don't know how your relationship has been, how long have you been together and has he always been like this ?

Anger is a secondary emotion there is always something bigger going on wether its hurt or frustration etc

It's hard to resolve if he won't sit down and communicate

WantALieDown · 23/10/2026 15:15

I think you need therapy to untangle why you’re attracted to this person. Honestly ask yourself if you are repeating past patterns or are attracted to being a rescuer.

gamerchick · 23/10/2026 15:17

He's abusing you OP. I don't even know where to start.

You need to get rid of him really.

Passusthepilla · 23/10/2026 15:18

I just feel like my insistence about talking about feelings is a bit selfish? Maybe we just need action? Like I need XYZ, and the other person does it? I don’t know.

OP posts:
BetsyChester · 23/10/2026 15:20

Sorry OP but it doesn't sound like he loves or cares for you at all.

Crying is a perfectly normal and human response to the person who is supposed to care about you ranting and raving at you.

As for setting you the task of walking away instead of setting himself the task of stopping being an aggressive, abusive piece of shit? He has flipped his unacceptable behaviour on to you: he wants you to believe that the problem is that you are not reacting to his horrible behaviour in the right way. It's nonsense. Classic DARVO bullshit.

Eye rolls, sighing, shouting, standing up to scream in my face. I’m so tired.
You don't have to live like this. This isn't what a healthy, safe and loving relationship looks like.

Have you read this? Please do. Why Does He Do That? by Lundy Bancroft?

Good luck OP. You sound lovely and you shouldn't waste another moment on him.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/10/2026 15:22

He's an angry addict who breaks things?

Drop him like he's hot. There is no way to fit ideas into his head.

Shedmistress · 23/10/2026 15:23

Make him your ex partner. That should sort it.

Catza · 23/10/2026 15:24

He told me a goal for me would be to walk away when he’s screaming at me and to not let him speak to me like that. He said it’s odd I sit and take it.

The man is a plonker but he talks a lot of sense. Why the hell do you let him speak to you that way? As well as letting him mismanage your shared finances. I'd take his advice and walk away. And keep walking.

JulietOscarBoring · 23/10/2026 15:24

Him screaming in your face while you cry is not an argument, it is abuse, and designed to shut you down so he doesn't have to listen to you. It doesn't matter what you do this is not going to change because the problem isn't you.

5128gap · 23/10/2026 15:24

He's an addict who has to take OPs money to fund his addiction. No doubt this is a frustrating state of affairs for him, especially when she protests. But this isn't something the OP needs to understand. She just needs to get away.

Wish44 · 23/10/2026 15:26

Im sorry OP - he doesn’t love you, respect you or care about you.

I know that is heart breaking but there is nothing you can do to change it. He is likely not capable of love and respect for women.

The only thing you can control here is loving and respecting yourself . Learn to put a shield up to his nonsense. Make some space between you and his behaviour.

no one deserves to be treated like this .

CelticSilver · 23/10/2026 15:28

'Emotionally unaware'? That's a new one. Abusive twat fits better.

Catza · 23/10/2026 15:28

Passusthepilla · 23/10/2026 15:18

I just feel like my insistence about talking about feelings is a bit selfish? Maybe we just need action? Like I need XYZ, and the other person does it? I don’t know.

Well, you told him you needed to plan something to do together. How did it go? Did he leap at the opportunity to just meet your needs without blowing up? Exactly.

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/10/2026 15:30

Why on earth are you putting yourself through this?

He’s a lazy and abusive piece of shit.

Stop trying to work out what you have done wrong. You have done nothing wrong.

Get him the hell out.

something2say · 23/10/2026 15:31

Darling,

If there is a stone in your shoe, you are not wrong to address it. You take it out and go on without being irritated or hurt, yes? The irritation is the signal that something isn't right.

He causes a stone in your shoe by being lazy, feckless and selfish. The examples you give are definitely him in the wrong, but look at them - they all mean he gets and you give right? So he is on a good fix with you, where you are not. He has a nicer life as long as you shut up about it.

And when you try to address it, he shouts at you?

And you are not allowed to take the stone out of your shoe that is irritating you?

That is how life with this man is and how he would like it to continue.

I hate to tell you but he is the stone in your shoe and until you break it off, you will forever be irritated.

If a man thought he could spend my money, be a lazy loser in my space that I have paid for and put together and manage, while he is turning down work - and then if he thought I was wrong to bring this up - and he thought he could shout and scream at me to make me back down so he can carry on having his nice life at my expense???

Honey he would be out of there so fast!!!!!

  1. Get him out
  2. Address why you have stood for it - why??? Do you come from a good family upbringing or a bad one, and you have some emotional difficulties you need to change before you can get rid of shit men.
  3. If the latter, get into therapy and heal.

But first - get him outta there!!

X

TheSmallAssassin · 23/10/2026 15:31

Just leave, you are wasting your life on this man, he is horrible and there is no fixing this relationship, or him.
