AIBU to think that there has never been a better time to be a criminal?

Just as the title says really.

I'm 62 years old and genuinely believe that there has never been a better time to be a criminal. Shoplifting isn't investigated anymore, jails are full and inmates are being released early. It's like criminals have won the lottery.

It is only going to get better for the crims and worse for the rest oof us TBH.

We'll just have to join the club!

Sentencing also seems low, particulary for VAWG.

No. I refuse to subscribe to such rubbish. We will all go down together if new give up and think like that.

People need to understand that they feel sad when they do something they know is bad. When people do through things, they realise what actually matters - life, each other, being good - and to carry on wilfully degrading that equation can never feel good, nor should it.

Let them learn, however late, that when they commit a crime, they dig two graves, one for themselves - and let us wiser older women never ever just stop and lie down and fail to use our myriad ways of leading this shit show to a better place.

HotGrapefruit · 22/10/2026 12:13

Well TBF it was MUCH easier to be a massive pedo in the 1980s, if I remember school correctly.

hmm well within our lifetimes it was legal to rape your wife, so it's not all downhill.

Probably feels like a hollow victory if you're one of the many women whose case isn't taken up and doesn't result in a conviction, though.

Fewer than 5% of any reports of rape result in someone being charged. And it is a hugely underreported crime with rape within marriage estimated to have the lowest reporting rate of all.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 22/10/2026 12:29

Yep and they are learning that’s it’s ok to do whatever you want and you will not only get away with it, but likely to be rewarded for it too, from school age.

asrl78 · 22/10/2026 12:32

Easy to believe that when you are fed bias from the media which highlights the extreme or high profile cases on injustice. Local shoplifter caught and gets a criminal record doesn't sell papers or generate clicks, local rapist gets off scot free sells news through outrage, classic emotional manipulation.

But thats my point. No one ever seem to get prosecuted for that, unless they render their wives unconscious and invite other men to do the same.

But for me, the main issue is that as a society we recognise (in law) that it is wrong. When I was a child it was perfectly okay - your wife is your property.

Then there are all the online scamming opportunities that didn't use to exist. Plus parties like The Greens telling people it's OK to steal if you are poor. Criminals liable for deportation that are never deported. People who don't pay fines, are never arrested.

MyAuntieHelenIsOneOfThem · 22/10/2026 12:45

Which type of crime are you talking about, OP? Domestic burglary rates in England and Wales are down about 75% since the early 2000s. Vehicle theft is down. Shoplifting and fraud are up, but homicides are down. Sexual assault, domestic abuse, stalking are unchanged from the previous year’s stats. It’s a mixed picture.

I didn't even think of those. It really is relentless isn't it?

Yes. My plan is scuppered. Instead of a care home, I was planning to go out and commit some heinous act (maybe a robbery?) and get locked up and looked after at the taxpayers expense. Now they will just let me out. I had best do a hurty words facebook post instead to make sure I get the lengthy care that I will need.

Domestic burglary is probably down because we have ring doorbells and we also don't keep cash and valuables in the house like we used to. Most burglary involved nicking the VCR back in the day, together with any leather jackets and cash hanging around. Vehicle theft also down due to cars having trackers fitted and being more difficult to steal.

I can't think of the last time I heard of a burglar or car thief being imprisoned.

Do you mean the hurty words the woman did that incited racial hate and posted about setting fires to places that housed immigrants ?

Yes, but I asked you what type of crime you were talking about, as many types of crime have diminished.

LauraNorda · 22/10/2026 12:57

Well, I've said for a year or more that only idiots follow the rules any more.

I haven't seen a policeman on foot for years. Rarely in cars.

Criminals dump thousands of tonnes of waste and get away with it. You drop a piece of paper and they hound you to the end of time.

Travellers bulldoze a piece of land and set up camp. Nothing happens. You put up a tree house in your own garden and they descend like vultures on you.

Shoplifters are left alone. I'm on CCTV at the self-service checkout because I am not trusted and they don't want to pay staff.

People drive like loons at speed, no tax, test, licence or insurance. I go 22mph in a 20 zone and I get fined and points, with the resultant increase in my insurance.

Police don't bother to turn up if your house is burgled but see how many do if you say the wrong thing on twitter.

All and sundry can just turn up on the beach in rubber boats. I am herded like cattle at the airport with face scans and fingerprinting and woe betide if my passport is a day out of date.

Yes. I'll do the same when I need to go into a care home. Sarcasm aside, it was a disproportionately severe sentence, especially when you consider the other farcical sentences/early releases that others get. But we are getting way from the point of this post.

Constantrunner · 22/10/2026 13:01

No it is way easier to be caught nowadays and criminal record checks mean a criminal history can affect you for a very long time.

She pleaded guilty and was sentenced in line with guidelines. She served about ten months in prison, less than half her sentence.

herewegoagain500 · 22/10/2026 13:05

Apart from when they are caught…it is the absolute worst time to be in prison!

Yes there have. The first page of Google results suggests there have been a number of such prosecutions.

A wee while back Police Scotland announced that not every crime would not be investigated and it would be trialled in Aberdeen.
Surprise, surprise it was a success and rolled out across Scotland.
The reality Aberdeen is a mess graffiti on about every flat surface, anti social behaviour galore(St Nicholas area)is really bad.
Also the free bus passes have contributed to a lot of it as the little sods go on tour.
One bus driver didn't make it home after a shift he was killed by a drunk 15 yr old.

Why are you comparing burglary etc. with 25 years ago but sexual assault with last year? Why are you trying to minimise it?

FYI recorded rape cases have risen from about 8,000 in early 2000's to 75,000 last year.
