AIBU to think that there has never been a better time to be a criminal?

Just as the title says really.

I'm 62 years old and genuinely believe that there has never been a better time to be a criminal. Shoplifting isn't investigated anymore, jails are full and inmates are being released early. It's like criminals have won the lottery.

So offences aren’t investigated ….. but the jails are full. So how do they get there ? Knock at the door and ask for free accommodation ?

Constantrunner · 22/10/2026 13:21

Sexual offences are now investigated that wouldn't even be considered 40 years ago.

Well, I've said for a year or more that only idiots follow the rules any more.

I haven't seen a policeman on foot for years. Rarely in cars.

Criminals dump thousands of tonnes of waste and get away with it. You drop a piece of paper and they hound you to the end of time.

Travellers bulldoze a piece of land and set up camp. Nothing happens. You put up a tree house in your own garden and they descend like vultures on you.

Shoplifters are left alone. I'm on CCTV at the self-service checkout because I am not trusted and they don't want to pay staff.

People drive like loons at speed, no tax, test, licence or insurance. I go 22mph in a 20 zone and I get fined and points, with the resultant increase in my insurance.

Police don't bother to turn up if your house is burgled but see how many do if you say the wrong thing on twitter.

All and sundry can just turn up on the beach in rubber boats. I am herded like cattle at the airport with face scans and fingerprinting and woe betide if my passport is a day out of date.

Hyperbole much?

  1. flytipping ? Environmental crime , which is actually investigated and prosecuted by the council .
  2. Illegal development ? Ditto .
  3. Shoplifting ? Still out there catching them , and positively all over it in our county’s biggest city .
  4. No road tax - for DVSA to investigate , no licence or insurance ? Seizing vehicles every single day, and that’s REALLY expensive for the driver. Speeding - well “ haven’t police got anything better to do, it’s just a cash cow ….. “
  5. Burglary - in our force every burglary gets attended . Every one .
  6. Immigration . For the border force to deal with .

All of which costs money , and staff to investigate . Meanwhile , I’ll bet you’re also complaining mightily should your council tax go up .

Yesterday , I calculated the amount that the average Band D householder pays towards my wages per day .

It’s 0.00029 of a pound . So less than a penny . A day .

Some offences are investigated of course. The people currently in jail got there either because they are one of the criminals that were investigated or they where there previously, and have been for a long time.

I'm not saying that the police do or should investigate all the things I mentioned but the lack of visibility on the streets just encourages low level crime and anti-social behaviour.

Council only investigate if its a generally law-abiding citizen or enforcement agents can try and wring some money out of you

There's enough cameras on the road spying on you so anything that pings up should be easy to investigate. Again, the lack of police visibility on roads just encourages this behaviour.

Border force? Joke.

Steady on, @plominoagain , coming on here with all your actual facts could be very distressing for those who prefer to believe whatever nonsense they read on FB today!

Perhaps all those people who never "see" a police officer on the streets should move to East Sussex. I regularly see one or two in my town centre, almost always see a PCSO or two when I'm in town and "street bobbies" are very visible in the larger coastal towns and in Brighton, especially in the summer.

But it's not the same everywhere. I last saw a PSCO genuinely over 4 years ago, and Bobby on the Beat before that.

Your council(s) are obviously a bit shit at responding to breaches of planning and waste disposal, although if rubbish dumping's done on a large scale it's a matter for the Environment Agency.

If someone's put up a treehouse that exceeds the maximum permitted size, I suggest you report it and copy your local councillor(s) into the email. If they're any good, they'll follow it up and let you know the outcome.

And I have to disagree about Border Force being a joke, given that small boat crossings are down by over 40%. The fact that people traffickers have turned their attention from the south Kent coast and are now making crossings to other ports on the south coast is evidence that BF have been successful in reducing crossings on the most commonly used route.

Well, I suggest you take that up with your Police and Crime Commissioner, or mayor if you live in one of the metropolitan authorities where the mayor deals with policing.

Of course, it may be that you live in a low crime area and they are concentrating their resources where they are most needed. No-one sensible could disagree with that. Sussex police have an online crime map and you can see exactly what and how many offences have been recorded in any area. I can see that where I live is a very low crime area, so I'm not fussed that I haven't seen a police officer here since 2010, when they came to tell me my mother had died.

It was such a surprise to see a copper, I damn near died of shock myself.

Yep. True Crime podcasters are always wondering where all the serial killers went after the 90s. Reality is most potential serial killers get nicked after their first murder. They got Wayne Couzens within a week.

QueenOfAccountability · 22/10/2026 12:52

Domestic burglary is probably down because we have ring doorbells and we also don't keep cash and valuables in the house like we used to. Most burglary involved nicking the VCR back in the day, together with any leather jackets and cash hanging around. Vehicle theft also down due to cars having trackers fitted and being more difficult to steal.

I can't think of the last time I heard of a burglar or car thief being imprisoned.

Millions of us don't have ring doorbells or car trackers.

I Googled 'burglars imprisioned in last week' and was inundated with reports from across the UK.

I’m not sure your point. The fact is, burglary is down 75%. And burglars that do burgle go to jail.

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/10/2026 15:10

It’s pretty easy to get a criminal record these days. Getting one can be disastrous for employment prospects. DC2 nearly got one for accidentally using an expired student railcard - the app just allowed them to carry on buying discounted train tickets without warning that the card had expired. It was discovered by a ticket inspector.

It went as far as court papers in which they were asked to please guilty or not guilty. Luckily a solicitor sorted it out. DC2 is not a criminal. It was an ordinary mistake that anyone could have made.

ThePeppyOpalScroller · 22/10/2026 15:28

I was queueing Greggs a few weeks ago and a man walked in, filled a shopping bag from the fridge and walked out. Two men in the queue tried to stop him but the staff told them to stop because they weren't allowed to challenge any thefts. One of the men said he would call the police, but was told not to, as company policy is thefts of food aren't to be reported. Felt like an idiot when I was paying. I could have just taken whatever I wanted and kept my money.

Netcurtainnelly · 22/10/2026 15:29

This is a noa classic example of "brain rot" or low-quality, rage-bait content. Posts like this are usually designed to drive engagement by stirring up panic, moral outrage, and hyperbole—in this case, claiming "criminals have won the lottery". 😔

Sorry, my point was that burglary is down and people do go to jail so you don't need a ring doorbell or car tracker to avoid crime. I believe we are agreeing.

You have standards and morals though and respect you wouldn't do it. That is the difference.
You also know a business needs to take money to run. There wouldn't be Greggs if everyone stole.
You also know that if you ran a business you wouldn't want people stealing from you.

Why are you comparing yourself to the low live dregs of society, who couldn't give a toss about anyone else and are as thick as shit. Alot if these people are on drugs too. I am sure you don't want to be like that.

These people are the lowest of the low in society.

Why are you comparing burglary etc. with 25 years ago but sexual assault with last year? Why are you trying to minimise it?

FYI recorded rape cases have risen from about 8,000 in early 2000's to 75,000 last year.

😮

It's a bloody stupid rage bait post. Criminals have won the lottery 😔

If you want to live amongst the dregs of society, day in day out. Loose all your freedom. Rat crap food everyday and being told what to do every minute of the day, possibly get beaten up and have to live away from your family without all your home comforts, no holidays, no breaks. Then go ahead. It's hardly winning the lottery.

Did Ian Huntley win the lottery ? He lived a violent and nasty life and he was hated and in the end was killed by another inmate.
I bet nobody was ever jealous of his life.
