To believe that Parents must have the right to tell their children they are not “in the wrong body” and children cant be “transgender”?

The government wants to bring in a law that threatens anyone including parents with up to five years in prison for denying a child’s or an adult’s “transgender identity” -. The draft Bill is in Committee stage. Labour have committed to making it law. Surely this is just bringing back the Scottish Parliament’s vote that everyone has to agree? That men are women if they say they are? This time parents are in the firing line if they dont agree to their child being “transed” at school or elsewhere? The Bill proposes that the courts should be able to make an order to enforce compliance on parents. Surely this can’t be allowed to go through without a fight?

We have children being put onto puberty blockers because they claim that not getting them is doing serious harm to their mental health. I.E. they are threatening self harm if they don't get them.

Surely anyone can see that this law is going to result in children claiming that their parents are causing them serious harm by refusing to call them by a new name and pronouns?

Do you really think a judge and jury is going to be swayed by a teenager throwing a temper tantrum?

You realise there will have to be substantial evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that a parents behaviour amounts to an abusive conversion practice? It's not going to prosecute parents on the whims and say-so of an individual. None of our laws work that way.

This law is not going to catch teenagers who want to throw a hissy fit.

Anyahyacinth · 22/10/2026 10:10

Where does this lead?

Why would anyone want to be so cruel?

Who does it serve to get so whipped up about people expressing themselves differently?

What other issues is it distracting us from?

I don't need answers. I just wanted to suggest a bit of compassion and critical thinking.

Passaggressfedup · 22/10/2026 10:14

I don't think so. Some medics have been proven to be entirely untrustworthy
But this is not about an individual medic making a decision, but a group of expert people from different field, using and interpreting research that will influence the bill that medics will have to follow.

MaidsRoom · 22/10/2026 10:15

PollyBell · 22/10/2026 09:21

Shouldn''t that be left to the medical or otherwise qualified to help a child navigate this?

No because it’s a fundamental right of parents to raise their children as they see fit (barring abuse etc) and to pass on their religious or ethical beliefs. The children also have a right to reject their beliefs if they choose.

Fascinating how keen some people are to promote conversion therapy as a good thing. This place is overrun by anti-LGBT sentiment lately. And of course it's the same people who don't 'believe' every major medical organisation world-wide in favour of the various youtube videos they watch.
And parents don't own their children - there is parental responsibility not an absolute parent right. Some of the people on here are quite scary in their attitudes.

Fascinating how keen some people are to promote conversion therapy as a good thing

Where has anyone done that? That's a rhetorical question, they haven't.

I don't blame you though, because there are even many Labour MPs who have pushed this line that the only reason you'd oppose this bill is if you're homophobic.

Please, if you are a Labour MP, can you actually engage with the arguments. There are actual people who could be affected by this. Yes, even children and young people who are gay, may be adversely affected by this bill if passed. Perhaps especially them.

ForFluentLimeFatball · 22/10/2026 10:16

I read somewhere that you can put water in a toaster but that it does not make it a kettle.

I know. Who would want to make children infertile and chop bits off their beautiful healthy bodies?? Who would promise them the impossible? Its mad that this sexist and homophobic theory even exists in 2026.

Well quite. Very difficult, divisive topic.

There is a similar misleading thread title on Gransnet - ?same person.

This is how nonsense gets spread around.

randomchap · 22/10/2026 09:07

That's not what the bill says. Why are you pushing a false narrative?

That is exactly what the vill says and more.
If you refuse to allow your daughter to bind her breasts you risk jail same as if you refuse to use wrong sex pronouns or a made up name.
You can be given crt orders compelling your speach
This bill is gay conversion and compelled religious observance and should not become law if it does in its current form it will be struck down on judicial review as incompatible with the human rights of parents

PimblePumble · 22/10/2026 10:25

This bill is conversion therapy, gay conversion therapy and it needs to be stopped.

The behaviour has to be abusive so I suppose it depends how refusing to allow binding manifests itself. What sort of scenario are you thinking of that means that refusal would be a breach of the proposed law?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/10/2026 10:32

StillgotmyiPod · 22/10/2026 09:36

It is.

This is the pertinent section (I have ignored the offence of assisting in a practice abroad for the purposes of brevity since that's less relevant). Emphasis my own:

"(1) A person commits an offence if the person carries out an abusive conversion practice on an individual which causes—

(a) serious harm to the individual’s physical or mental health, or
(b) serious alarm or distress to the individual which has a substantial adverse effect on their usual day-to-day activities."

A parent saying to their child that they can't change sex is not going to meet that threshold.

Parents will not be prosecuted for not believing their child is trans. They will absolutely be prosecuted if they cause their child physical harm or submit their child to abusive behaviour, as you would hope they would be for any type of abuse.

This is reassuring!

I get what you mean. Like physically ripping them off your daughter, wrestling her to the ground etc. But it could be hiding them, destroying them. Is that abusive under the bill?

Your OP sounds like utter nonsense as there's absolutely no such thing happening in the UK or anywhere else?

Please evidence this and i will rest easy.

The OP has pretty wildly misinterpreted something as far as I can tell. This thing about conversion therapy.

In the countries which already have similar laws, there haven't been any convictions. But, as they say, the process is the punishment. Children have been taken from families, and will be if this bill passes.
The 'protection orders' are particularly dangerous too.

Yes, and that includes protecting someone against conversion away from a trans identity

It is meant to protect against conversion if you are LGBTQ.

so parent who’s worried about being seen to say the wrong thing does have a legitimate fear

I wasn't suggesting that. The teenager with the hissy fit will have the weight of the trans medicalisation movement behind them as well. And that at the moment is a juggernaut of affirmation and treatment.

If a child says that their parent refusing to call them Gizmo or any other 'non binary' name causes them Alarm or Distress, please quote the specific part of this new act that protects the parent from prosecution.

Guidanceplease20 · 22/10/2026 10:47

Personally I would tell my kids they can feel whatever they feel, love whoever they love, dress in whatever they want too and choose their own name which I will use.

But dont mess with their body medically.

(I basically cant see the issue with anything that can be easily reversed if they later wish to. As for names, I had 3 nicknames as a child and almost no one but the doctor used my official name. I wouldnt choose a fight over a name)

RaggedRocks · 22/10/2026 10:47

I would ban religious indoctrination of children before they are old enough to understand. Parents don't own their children. That would lead eventually to religions dying out. But that's another topic.

Great, but none of that means that the burden of proof would be met for a prosecution, let alone a successful one.

Precisely this.

OP's premise is entirely false, but typical of the histrionics common to this site when it comes to anything "gender" related.
