Am I reading too much into this ‘jokey’ Estate Agent comment?

I am selling my flat to buy somewhere with my DP.

I have had three valuations, I have a preferred Estate Agents but a comment made by the staff member who did the valuation has made me uneasy.

I asked whether it would be him who accompanies viewers. He said it would be and ‘not to worry I’ll make sure your knicker drawer is kept safe’.

AIBU to find this creepy? DP (who wasn’t here) says he was being jokey and I’m over thinking it.

Its totally unprofessional. And icky.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/10/2026 18:43

Yeah. No.

There are other estate agents.

Tortephant · 21/10/2026 18:46

It wasn't appropriate but I agree it was jokey. If he is the best and preferred agent, forget it and get sold.

tomorrowfollowstoday · 21/10/2026 18:48

Completely inappropriate. You're allowed to choose another agency for this reason.

Createausername1970 · 21/10/2026 18:49

I can see it was an attempt at being humorous. It failed on you, but others may have laughed and replied in the same vein.

It wouldn't have worried me, and I probably would have replied in the same vein. But if you feel discombobulated by it, then go somewhere else.

This,

BobbleBear · 21/10/2026 19:08

N’ah, fuck that.

I went with an all women agency when I was single and selling my house, because they were totally professional and definitely no Ick factor.

Didimum · 21/10/2026 19:13

Silly thing to say but most likely harmless.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 21/10/2026 19:19

It would immediately make me think that checking out the knicker drawer was playing on his own mind.
If he makes inappropriate comments to prospective buyers - he could put them right off.
That example of his sales chat is so lame, I doubt he's any good at his job.

JazzyJelly · 21/10/2026 19:21

That would make me uncomfortable, but that's probably because I did once find a workman going through my knicker drawer.

Perhaps it's more common than I assumed.

parakeet · 21/10/2026 19:58

Creepy and unprofessional. Vote with your feet and tell them why.

dairydebris · 21/10/2026 20:01

Fgs the only people who'd say that are people who actually would look through your knicker drawer. Don't use the weirdo

KittyWilkinson · 21/10/2026 20:01

He's supposed to be selling your house for you. I would write him off as a plonker and look elsewhere.

jimmyhill · 21/10/2026 20:03

He's the one in the knicker drawer

LlynTegid · 21/10/2026 20:03

No way would I choose such an estate agent.

DaisyChain505 · 21/10/2026 20:03

Definitely send an email or better yet make a telephone call and let them know why you won’t be choosing them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/10/2026 20:05

I no longer assume that things said in jest are harmless. Men as a whole have proved that joking gives predators cover. Get a woman.

buymeaboaanddrivemetoreno · 21/10/2026 20:15

If he’s saying inappropriate stuff to you what will he say to potential buyers? It would be a no from me and I think I’d likely tell the agency why!

Buyerq · 21/10/2026 20:16

It’s annoying because that’s definitely the stand out agency with the best rep locally. But it did seem an odd comment and I’m glad others agree.

It's not a rape joke but it is a sex offending joke.

shiningstar2 · 21/10/2026 20:21

Nothing to do with who might find it funny or who might not. The Estate Agent had no way of knowing any person's likely reaction. For that reason alone (amongst others) this comment is highly unprofessional.

It’s all very well saying get a woman, but 2/3 appointments I’ve made this week are men. It didn’t occur to me to ask for a woman. Maybe they consider it unsafe, although I am female. More likely it suits their diary.

When I sold my house, I had 3/3 male agents come to do valuations, person doing photos and the EPC were all male. Saying that, I would speak to the owner/manager and report the comment and say that’s why you’ve decided against their company.

I had to have serious words when someone showed round a buyer and reported to me that he’d mentioned possibly needing permission to remove a tree (no permission was needed, I have no idea why he thought this was appropriate to mention, there was no TPO on the bog standard conifer 🤬) but this bloke’s comment was very off putting!

loratadine · 21/10/2026 20:41

If this really happened then of course you don’t go with them.

But if it did happen, you already know the answer, so why are you asking?

Wickesisgoodenoughforme · 21/10/2026 20:45

Gross. Definitely go with a comparable agency if there is one.

remembranceofthingspast · 21/10/2026 20:45

@Buyerqyou could ask for a different rep at the agency to do your viewings
