Am I reading too much into this ‘jokey’ Estate Agent comment?

I am selling my flat to buy somewhere with my DP.

I have had three valuations, I have a preferred Estate Agents but a comment made by the staff member who did the valuation has made me uneasy.

I asked whether it would be him who accompanies viewers. He said it would be and ‘not to worry I’ll make sure your knicker drawer is kept safe’.

AIBU to find this creepy? DP (who wasn’t here) says he was being jokey and I’m over thinking it.

Just gross. Anyone who thinks that is humorous wouldn't be left alone in my house. I would be using someone else.

Paojrvtis · 21/10/2026 20:48

That would be enough to make me choose a different one (and wonder if he was going to look in my knicker drawer). Although I also didn’t choose an estate agents as on their website the women who work there were listed as “The girls” so maybe I’m easily put off

Ask for a different member of staff and say why. He’s trying to be a lad in a professional role.

CrystalTits · 21/10/2026 20:53

I’m willing to bet money that he wouldn’t have made that ‘joke’ if your DP was with you.

I can see it was an attempt at being humorous. It failed on you, but others may have laughed and replied in the same vein.

It wouldn't have worried me, and I probably would have replied in the same vein. But if you feel discombobulated by it, then go somewhere else.

I agree. It wouldn't bother me cos I can see where he was going with the humour bit it didn't land for you.

It's your choice but I would say put it behind you. He's the best guy for the job and you want to get your house sold.

Estate agent wouldn’t say that to a man. Get a new one and explain the reasons why. Yuck.

Happyjoe · 21/10/2026 21:24

God, he's a car salesman in a EA's job.
Nah, naff and not even remotely funny and weirdly now would make me not trust him.

Yesautumniscoming · 21/10/2026 21:31

Imagine if he said that to a man? I.e boxer drawer. It just wouldn't happen. So why should women be treated any differently 😠makes me so cross.

OP If you're not comfortable don't proceed with him.

What an idiot - yeah I would use someone else

It would immediately make me think that checking out the knicker drawer was playing on his own mind.
If he makes inappropriate comments to prospective buyers - he could put them right off.
That example of his sales chat is so lame, I doubt he's any good at his job.

Yep, why did his mind even go there.

NotAnotherScarf · 21/10/2026 22:42

I've got a fairly broad sense of humour but in private. Such a joke to a customer is sooo unprofessional and makes me wonder if he does in fact himself look.

comealongdobbeh · 21/10/2026 22:45

Go with them just ask for someone else and if they ask why, tell them.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/10/2026 23:10

Ewww

MrsBananaman · 21/10/2026 23:43

Personally I’d have made a joke back, but I can see how it wouldn’t sit well with most people and he should be more careful about his “jokes”

(I’d have said “no good looking in there unless you need a parachute haha”)
