I've managed to snag Bayeux Tapestry tickets for myself and my husband for February. We only visit London maybe once a year and have done most of the tourist hotspots (London Eye, the Tower, etc.). We aren't big drinkers and love history. I'm looking online, and all I'm seeing are escape rooms and similar things. What are some underrated bits to get up to? We're in London for 3 days and will be going to watch a show on the West End on one of the evenings

Have you been to the Churchill War Rooms? They’re excellent. Or if the dates work out, the Clapham South Underground Bomb shelter tour? www.ltmuseum.co.uk/whats-on/hidden-london/clapham-south

The museum of London will be reopening at its new site in November so if you like history that may be worth a visit

I love the Sir John Soane’s museum which isn’t too far from the British museum. The Foundling Museum and the Wellcome Collection are also nearby and great.

Slightly further afield, in Hackney, I love the Museum of the Home if you’re interested in interiors and objects through time!

If you like history, the museum of London is reopening soon after a big remodelling. Is looks really good!

The Imperial War Museum! Love that place.

I was tempted by the Foundling Museum on our last trip! We did the Petrie instead, and I wasn't massively enamoured

I could happily spend a day at the natural history museum. As previous posters have mentioned Churchill's war rooms are excellent.
I'm sure there are some really good exhibitions on at the numerous galleries in London?
Sorry it's been a long time since I visited x

Rotherhithe and wapping are great areas to explore. Proper london history, check out the Brunel museum whilst you're there.

Emily3325 · 21/10/2026 13:54

Would people recommend the natural history or science museum?

The Wallace Collection in Marylebone. Keats' House, Hampstead. Boat trip to Putney to St Mary's church, see where the debates were held - depends on what period of history you're into, though, that one might be a bit niche. I've not been yet but I'd like to visit Bunhill Fields next time I go.

gerispringer · 21/10/2026 13:58

Natural history and science museum are definitely touristy and are always awash with kids - school parties etc. The V and A is more grown up and has some fascinating sections and lovely cafe. If you like art Tate Britain is quieter than the Tate Modern and you can easily spend an afternoon there. I also like the National Portrait Gallery.

gerispringer · 21/10/2026 14:00

You could book one of the viewing galleries - Sky Garden or 22 Bishopsgate - free but you have to book in advance.

These are exactly the places I was going to suggest!

I really enjoyed the Churchill War rooms - it was DH who wanted to go, so I was a fairly reluctant attendee but found them really interesting.

i wouldn’t go to the natural history museum or science museum if it was during February half term.

Worth looking at the Tate, V&A etc. to see if any interesting exhibitions on.

i quite like lunch and a wander around Shoreditch/Spitalfield.

JosephineMBettany · 21/10/2026 14:05

Eltham Palace is fascinating! A mixture of medieval and art deco.

NotSorry · 21/10/2026 14:08

Going up The Monument is great (if you have good knees) good views of London and never been busy when I've been. It's also fairly cheap and you don't need to pre-book. It's also a 10 minute walk from St. Pauls

LetMeGoogleThat · 21/10/2026 14:08

I'm a geek when it comes to Roman and medieval history so I'd go for All Hallows church, Billingsgate roman house or crossbones graveyard.

Tortephant · 21/10/2026 14:10

One of these, haven’t done London, have done a few other, they are excellent.

The Charles Dickens Museum is walking distance from the BM. Also Dr Johnson's House. Lunch at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese.
