13 is too young in my opinion.
There have been a lot of studies that price how damaging the tiktok algorithm is to young people. It's not good for them. It's addictive. They don't need it.

Let hey have WhatsApp to message her friends. Pinterest for curating her bedroom.

No tiktok.

XenoBitch · 20/10/2026 19:09

Why do you want them to have it?

dylanke · 20/10/2026 19:24

Absolutely not. You have NO control over what they will be exposed to.

DisappearingGirl · 20/10/2026 19:26

Following this as my 13 year old desperately wants Instagram.

Currently she has access to WhatsApp and Pinterest (and YouTube via TV), but not Instagram, Tiktok or Snapchat.

if you’re in the UK, aren’t they banning it from January for under 16’s anyway? Save yourself the hassle then and just don’t let them have it in the meantime.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 20/10/2026 19:31

They are brining in new laws to ban kids from social media. So as he already doesn’t have tik tok, follow the new guidance that comes with the new law (i.e 16)

mamaof4losingmymind · 20/10/2026 19:47

I took tiktok off my teen best decision I ever made i was naive to let her have it in the first place I didn't realise how toxic it was

Pinkflamingo10 · 20/10/2026 20:33

No need for TikTok.
Many countries have banned it for under 16s and UK following suit

AnxiousSandwich · 21/10/2026 05:58

Just as an FYI you can access the Tik Tok videos through Pinterest and there is also a chat function where people can add you or follow your boards and then send private messages.

we are currently going through some issues with our 13yo daughter and it’s been eye opening. I had assumed Pinterest was a safe option but she’s been exposed to some very adult content.

I strongly believe that teens just don’t have the maturity to manage social media and how addictive it can be.

I’m the first to admit I was too relaxed on it all before and trying to fix it now is so hard!

Fedupofthisgame · 21/10/2026 06:43

Really interested in this. I have DD12 who is desperate for SM and I have said no. I have TikTok on my phone and let her view it on there (I don't use it). Has anyone taken it off their teen and what was the outcome? Was there improvement In behaviour etc?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/10/2026 06:45

My DD has it. They love making videos with their friends. She was asking me from about 12 though and I was saying no then her dad said yes eventually.

Does he often undermine you? Kids liking something doesn’t mean it’s the right thing. The ban speaks for itself and cannot come soon enough.

Boomer55 · 21/10/2026 06:48

It’s toxic. I wouldn’t.

WillieBanjo · 21/10/2026 06:49

I’ve just listened to “The Anxious Generation” on Audible . I would certainly recommend it to you and everyone who has a smartphone or children or both and decide if you want your child to have TikToc .

IronEverything · 21/10/2026 06:50

Might as well give her a bottle of Smirnoff and 20 B&H whilst you're at it.

Sogrownup3 · 21/10/2026 07:30

I am so surprised that so many people think TikTok is ok for young teens to have! I work in safeguarding and it's a hard no for my teens. Why do parents allow theses things when there is so much info out there about its harm?

No. We banned it and it’s the best thing we ever did. Our kids only had Snapchatbat 13 and no other SM til 16.

’they love making videos with their friends’

And this is ok? Having 12 year old girls making videos and posting online for literally anyone not only to see but to DO whatever they want with?

I hope at the very least they have been taught well about not making videos in public or near windows so they cannot be traced? They have been taught what is acceptable to post? Someone is monitoring this?

You didn’t actually say what age your DD got it. Hopefully if she’s a teen she’s not posting her videos

No

SJM1988 · 21/10/2026 09:42

Social media will be banned for under 16 from Spring 2027 so there isn't much point in them having it for a few months. It will just make it harder to take it away.

I wouldn't allow any form of social media that young anyway. Isn't it well known it is linked to mental health and development issues with children if used so young?

KaySam · 21/10/2026 09:43

Good no it’s dangerous and toxic.ive got it and I don’t post any I am just nosey and the amount of men I’ve had trying to follow me and message me is shocking.

children need to be protected from it and potential predators

SausageLabLady · 21/10/2026 09:59

I’m glad it’s being banned soon. My 10 year old DD has been asking me for it. I think some of her friends might have it.

ISpeakJive · 21/10/2026 10:04

Don’t do it. My 15 year old DD asked for it. Got totally addicted to it. Now it’s banned. Don’t expose them to any social media.

Bad idea
