Really interested in this. I have DD12 who is desperate for SM and I have said no. I have TikTok on my phone and let her view it on there (I don't use it). Has anyone taken it off their teen and what was the outcome? Was there improvement In behaviour etc?

Yes significant improvement in mental health and behaviour. She was heavily stuck on the self harm side of tiktok and diagnosed herself with allsorts. Tiktok got took away a week off tantrums now I have my caring healthy daughter back

Lots of AI content on TTok & scammers

When you will also let them have unfettered access to alcohol and hard drugs I guess. You clearly aren’t interesting in their brain being functional past the age of 15.

What do you mean by "have" tiktok?
Just watching the videos or making videos?
Making videos - no definitely not.
Watching videos - maybe. I see some tiktok videos if they are shared on YouTube/Facebook/Instagram or even just if I Google something. Some videos are interesting or funny and perfectly harmless.
I would say she can only watch videos while in the living room or similar where you can monitor what she's watching.

Edited

You do know that ‘just’ watching videos means she can be shown anything? Being in the same room won’t stop her seeing things she shouldn’t, not even if you sit beside her and watch. All that will happen is she will see it at the same time as you, by the time you can react she has already seen the video. A while back people were stitching a man committing suicide with a gun into videos. I tried to tell people on here to get their children off the app and got absolutely ripped to shreds for it. Apparently people do not give a fuck what their children are exposed to.

ThatRedFish · 21/10/2026 19:08

Don’t allow until after GCSE’s.
Also, from spring it’ll be banned for under 16s so no point in getting a few months before ban anyway.

That's very true.
Although I don't know how tiktok actually works with what it shows you.
My daughter watches stuff on there but it's all to do with her interests so there's obviously some algorithms in play.
(She's 18 before anyone is horrified).

Laura9899 · 21/10/2026 19:26

Dont do it. There is literally nothing good for them on there.

Winniepoobear · 21/10/2026 20:05

My daughter nagged & nagged me for snapchat .. everybody had it - she didnt. She would come home and say she was left out blah blah ... I caved in on her 15th birthday ... shes 16 now and I wish I hadn't allowed it. I wish the whole Internet wasnt allowed - i hate the influence that these videos have on our kids, the stuff she believes is unreal .. stupid things, what to eat to be thin, what not to eat, the list goes on and on ...

Keep it from them till the new law comes in, then they cant nag ..

Hermione101 · 21/10/2026 20:11

There is no way that I would allow my DS to be exposed to any of that garbage. Nothing good in there for them at all.

Needmorelego · 21/10/2026 20:27

I know there is a lot of shit on tiktok but I am surprised by those saying there's "nothing good on there".
My daughter is a huge book reader and reads all sorts of different books and genre.
A lot of these books and authors she discovered via "Booktok" on tiktok.
Surely it's what they watch?
Maybe I am completely naive?
Or maybe I am lucky because my daughter can smell AI or made up fake nonsense from a mile away and laughs at half of it.

mindutopia · 21/10/2026 20:29

Nope, I told mine, when they’re 16 and I no longer strictly monitor what they do on their phones, then they can make that decision for themselves.

Needmorelego · 21/10/2026 20:32

I notice the OP hasn't come back to explain what they mean by "have tiktok".
Another "what's your opinions" post that's probably a journalist.....🤔
I'm out.
Bye all.

Scottishskifun · 21/10/2026 20:33

Nope way too young don't do it!

For info studies have shown that the brain changes from mobile phones can stimulate the same areas as has been seen for cocaine users.

I suggest sitting and watching the documentary swiped the school that banned smart phones (with your 13 year old) it's a real eye opener and also heartbreaking in places. It also covers how quickly the algorithms can lead to very dark places very quickly.

Orangebadger · 21/10/2026 20:36

No tik tok at 13 alongside no insta or snap chat. My 14dd only has whatapp and Pinterest. All blocked. There is way too much research out there now pointing to had damaging all of these are to teens, esp girls and I know there can be a lot of pressure on kids to get it. My DD use to have everyone asking for her snap or tik tok, but she knew I was not going to budge. Far too many dangerous rabbit holes for them to get into and you would have no idea what they get exposed.

DLuffy · 21/10/2026 20:36

yeah coz the government are banning it for no reason 🤔

MakeItToTheMoon · 21/10/2026 20:41

I watched a video which shows it takes only a few minutes before a paedophile makes contact with a young persons social media account.

The men commenting on this fake child’s account was extreme. I would be saying no to Tik Tok

BlondeBanshee · 21/10/2026 20:42

I let DD when she was that age. The algorithm goes to stuff she’s interested in extremely quickly so it’s dances, jokes and history. Mines politics and languages. I’ve never seen anything dangerous or dodgy on either account but I know it’s there so I guard her.

I think the most dangerous things are messaging apps like Snapchat. People pretending to be someone else and causing upset. You can tell a kid every eventuality to try and protect them from danger but the predators are one step ahead. DD had someone message her saying they were a teenager who was concerned they were gay and needed someone to talk to. She just thought he needed help. He sent her quite vulgar messages of his first sexual encounter a few days after.

im a big believer that until they can be trusted you should have access to their phone. You pay fr it after all. It’s not about invading privacy, it’s about keeping them safe and using an open channel.

Tenthouseandspoon · 21/10/2026 21:56

Follow ‘smartphone free childhood’ on instagram (I’m aware of the irony!). Full of not only reasons not to allow this but also really helpful information for parents to navigate this with their teens. Not a hope in hell I’d be allowing SM for my children under 16.

ThePoliteLion · 21/10/2026 22:26

Tik tok is banned in our house. Utter shite. DD12 and DD13 don’t miss out in the slightest

parietal · 21/10/2026 22:29

My 15 year old recently thanked me for not letting her have snap chat or TikTok at 13. She has seen how these put pressure on her friends and has been able to side step that by saying “my parents are really strict”
