Year left on PCP, paying £350 a month

Need inspiration for what to do next, tempted to buy a used outright!

Did you put down a huge deposit? How is it so cheap??

She will have a large balloon payment at the end

OchreReader · 21/10/2026 18:21

Toyota Yaris hybrid 2019. Bought on trade in and finance in 2023. I love it!

Still seems ridiculously cheap when you have the option of giving it back at the end 🤷🏼‍♀️

typically with PCPs you have 4 options:

  • pay balloon, often called Guaranteed Future Value and own the car
  • part exchange and get an new car in finance
  • voluntary surrender (hand back) and be liable for wear and tear and excess mileage costs
  • re-finance for 1 year with option at the end of paying balloon

That poster may also have got a 0% finance agreement which helps with the low monthly payments

2006 Fiat Panda. I've never used finance to buy a car.

Redflagsabounded · 21/10/2026 18:26

Always bought outright even if an old banger for a few hundred.

Current got a 2018 Dacia Sandero, bought from dealership when the reg year changed so it was no longer a 'new current reg' car with about 45 miles on the clock, for a hefty discount on list price plus about £500 trade in on my ancient Renault Clio. Bought with an inheritance.

Reliable as anything, cheap as chips to run, never needed any work other than wear and tear on tyres, 1 windscreen wiper and a new headlight bulb

Currently stashing £100 a month away through salary sacrifice with a plan to do much the same in 10 years time.

Bought 15 month old Skoda Octavia from dealer (ex hertz rental car bought back by Skoda and offered to dealers in Grade A condition) huge reduction in new price paid cash. 10 years and 80000 miles later with regular servicing very good car.

A 10 year old faithful corsa in a very distinct colour - i never miss it in a car park

I had one of those before I switched to a blue car. Loved my bright corsa. Easily spotted…even from the moon probably!

2026 Peugeot 5008, bought outright. I dont believe in car finance, you are paying a premium for a depreciating asset. Buy outright if you can.x

catmum44 · 21/10/2026 18:33

MX5 Homura, PCP £400 pm. Paying off at the end as they have stopped selling the larger engine size in the UK due to emissions rules changes. And I love the car.

We boight a Cupra Born EV. Bought new, out right in Oct 25, delivered Jan 26. Went to buy used, but the deal on a new car wiped out 80% of the first year's depreciation. About £10k off list price in total. We have had the money saved for a couple of years, but Covid reduced our mileage, so we kept our last car a couple of years longer than we intended, but a few advisors popped up on our last MOT, so time to change. Really pleased with it. Over 300 mile range, v quick, very cheap to run charging at home. However as it has the biggest battery it has larger, wider wheels. They look good, but a new tyre is £250. A new wheel £1,250. Scraped a kerb a few weeks ago, damaged 2 wheels and one tyre. Over £500. Fortunately, we took tyre and wheel insurance out, as part of the car deal. Never been more pleased with being sold an extra. Really good car though.

Lease a VW Tiguan. Insurance & maintenance included. No deposit. £425 per month

2026 Dacia duster hybrid bought outright

godmum56 · 21/10/2026 18:42

Toyota Rav4 bought from new 2011 and I love it. Its in fair nick, low mileage, spacious and comfortable. I live in a fairly rural area and the roads do flood so a high ish 4x4 car is useful if not essential. I have mostly driven some kind of 4x4 since early 90's. the higher seats make it easier to get in and out of and give better road view.

Whatifyoufly22 · 21/10/2026 18:42

VW Beetle, bought outright. I love it and it has never let me down. It feel like I need a car with more safety features given the amount of motorway driving I do now.

LavenderViolets · 21/10/2026 18:50

Bought 18 month old Peugeot e-208 gti a year ago which I love to drive. Never do finance.

TwinklyAmberSloth · 21/10/2026 18:54

I've never had finance for a car.

Been driving 30 years. Started with cheaper cars and then put money aside into a savings account every month for a replacement in the future. About £200 a month.

Drove the last one for 8 years then just part exchanged it for a 2023 car that I will drive for another 8 years.

WinnerwinnerGinfordinner · 21/10/2026 18:56

10 year old Audi A4 estate, full bells and whistle model. Bought second hand outright. All my cars have been second hand bought outright cars. The last one we had for 14 years before it started getting expensive at the garage so we get our moneys worth!

Efrogwraig · 21/10/2026 18:58

VW UP! Traded down. Just wanted a runaround. Cash outright buy. Will drive it till it dies. Love it.

Doriangraysattic · 21/10/2026 19:07

My last two cars have been gorgeous little old type micras. The first one cost £1000 (1998 - bought in 2007) and lasted until 2016 - the second cost £500 (2001) and only died last year. Everyone laughed at me but I wasn't paying out each month what I'd paid once
The other thing that gets me is the cost of repairs on the new cars. One tyre seems to be the price of my mazda!

10 year old Scirocco, bought for cash, does everything I need a car to do and costs me not one penny in payments per month. I hope that helps. I spend the money I don't spend on city breaks in Europe in case you wonder. We have a wonderful time.
