I’ll start:

BMW X1 2022
Year left on PCP, paying £350 a month

Need inspiration for what to do next, tempted to buy a used outright!

Burgundy Smart Car for Two Brabus. Bought brand new for 17.5k in 2022. I think it is the coolest thing ever. Literally noone agrees with me, and friends and family piss themselves whenever they see it. Its still funny 4 years on apparently. Randoms also point at it, and giggle, thinking I cant see them.

Pfft. I love it! I have dyspraxia, am a super shit driver, can't park for toffee - this car means at least Im mobile and I can nip around easier than the monsters I used to drive. AND I still think its looks cool (delusional cleary 😁)

@JoyChansey

Leasing payments cost £9614 over the 3 years. If i bought the car outright when new and sold if after 3 years, the depreciation will likely be more than that,

But if you bought new and kept it for a decade or so, it would virtually be "free" for the latter 7 years other than routine servicing/maintenance.

I've a spreadsheet for my elderly 18 year old car and it's cost less than £100 per month over the 18 years, including full purchase price (new), breakdown insurance (never used), annual servicing and MOTs. Still looks good as new (inside and out) as we look after it.

The average age of cars on the road today is 13 years, so really no need to pay more to have a new car every three years other than vanity.

eewwdavid · 21/10/2026 15:56

@ErrolTheDragonand everyone else who replied re how you manage to buy outright, thank you.

I am also old 😅 but have 2 kids still fully dependent/ in education. Single parent, 1 income, and I didn't start driving till later in life. Have had v old car gifted to me with nominal repayments after death of a family member. So I've never had car payments, and any small amount I save monthly goes to children's saving for uni.
I cant see me ever being able to buy outright as I won't ever have that starting pot of money.
I work in education, we can access a salary sacrifice scheme and looking round the car park I'd say we're quite evenly split between old bangers and lease cars. No one I know has purchased a decent car outright

You will be amazed at what people will glean from social media about your life. And yes, some people do bother and go to lengths to do so. Criminals usually.

So someone now knows I have a 10 year old vauxhall. How on earth does that affect my life. Everyone who sees me driving around knows it lol

What's a criminal going to do with that info

And mumsnet doesn't even publish our nanes

I will never buy a car outright, it has never worked out well for me. I’ve always ended up paying an absolute fortune to keep it on the road and inevitably it costs me a fortune in maintenance

I always go for a 3 year lease with 3 months down. That way I only have to pay one service and no MOT. I drive 12k a year mainly on motorways and quite frankly when I’m spending that much time in the car I don’t want a basic little manual runaround. My money works much harder in the bank than on a depreciating asset

I set a budget and find a lease within the budget. I currently pay £330 a month for an EV. There’s virtually no running costs. Service at 2 years was £150 and it’s about £5 in electric a week

12k is " that much time" in a car?

One of my old cars was still running at 270k ( another astra) when some prat wrote it off while it was parked

I’m so jealous! I absolutely loved my MX-5, they really are more fun to drive than any other car at any price. Parting with him broke my heart when I had to get a 4 seater car. I would buy another today if I had somewhere to keep a second car.

Same here.

I miss mine a lot and even after 15 years it had no MOT advisories or racked up any big bills.

I only replaced it as you can't get a gazebo and half a dozen stock boxes in the boot.

Thanks!
nothing that I can relate to in my neck of the woods then

It’s fantastic if you live near it!

My friends also think my Smart Fortwo is hilarious but I absolutely love it. I live on my own and only do about 2.5k miles a year so it’s perfect for my needs. My sister keeps sending me links to ‘proper’ cars - no thanks.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 21/10/2026 16:52

2023 Skoda Enyaq bought outright a year ago.

EVs are great value used, very poor value new.

One day retailers will figure out how to price in depreciation but that day is not today.

Haha...same! I did 2k last year. I dont drive it on the motorway unless i have to, or for longer than about half hour. This is because it is electric and it only takes a bit of heavy traffic, and having heat on, and it can run low. But yeh, for domestic driving its super awesome.

Mazda 2 late 2025, nearly one year into the PCP and paying £280 a month.

StMarie4me · 21/10/2026 17:49

BMW 1Series 2 litre diesel - 13 plate - mapped 😁
Bought outright.

Leedsfan365 · 21/10/2026 18:02

Your monthly payment is covering the depreciation which is at its worst in the first 3 years.

just driving a new car off the forecourt it loses 20% (VAT).

buy an ex demo or a 3 year old vehicle with a FSH.

ThereWeAreThensmileyface · 21/10/2026 18:04

A 10 year old faithful corsa in a very distinct colour - i never miss it in a car park

Stelladid · 21/10/2026 18:06

Volvo XC40 top of the range bought new February 2024. I paid £24,000 and got the rest on interest free credit at £394 per month. It will be paid off next February, so not long now. I will drive it until it falls apart, unless I reach a point before it does, when I only want to potter locally in a car (I’m 67), then I’d sell it and get a town car.

I covet what you have. As an old women, when I give up motorway driving, I’d get rid of my big Volvo and have a Smart Car (they have just started making them again) 🙂

sgtmajormum · 21/10/2026 18:15

10 year old Skoda Fabia bought outright. Love it, it's surprisingly nippy and only £20 a year road tax. Bought so my teens could practice learning to drive which it's perfect for.

40andcounting · 21/10/2026 18:16

2012 nissan qasqui bought new 14yrs ago outright just after I gave birth to my 1st. Paid partially by selling my A4 carbriolet soft top (not child friendly I tried) and selling my shares from sharesave scheme from work. Works out it's cost me the equivalent of £100 a mth over time. Had no problems with it. I'm panicking about what I do when it goes as I've never had a car payment each month and definitely couldnt stetch to it now single parent to 2 😬

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/10/2026 18:16

We always buy outright, my first car a mini cost me £500 many decades ago.

Current car a VW Passat bought about 13/14 years ago, it was 6 months old and still under manufacturers warranty. I think it was about 23k.

I bought a Toyota Yaris in 2017 for 7.5k it was about 18 months old. When I stopped working and didn’t really need it I gave it to DS for passing his A levels in 2020.

@eewwdavid I was inspired by a very left wing militant tendency Labour teacher who brought his politics in to the classroom. He told us all about the evils of the stock market. He made us choose stocks and shares in the Financial Times which he brought in to the classroom. I had heard of neither the FT nor the stock market. My London Brick stocks and shares did very well.
