To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

Well he's just announced gas production from Jack Daw in the north sea, I guess that's not a minor issue.
I'm reserving opinion on Burnham so far I'm not a fan of the tiktoks but get younger people might be. I don't think we give prime ministers enough time to actually achieve things these days so I'd like to see what he can do

Watching the brilliant "Saving Lives at Sea". The RNLI is a a brilliant organisation and I'm proud to donate to them. 🛟

Are you my 7 year old? The RNLI is his special interest

histrainersbythedoor · 21/10/2026 06:57

But added up they’re not. That’s the entire point.

These are little things, yes. But they’re a symptom of the social contract breaking down. If they can be fixed things will be getting a little better.

If you say so.

Starmer and Reeves ‘fixed the foundations’, right?

Glad you agree it is unnecessary to paint ordinary left wing people as ultra far left lunatics. MNHQ also agrees, thankfully.

Edited

Ditto with ‘far right’, given some posts were removed earlier.

It was a joke

RVectensian · 21/10/2026 07:19

In what way were you expecting the reaction to him to be any different to any other PM? When has the public shown any patience for any of his predecessors?

anunlikelyunicorn · 21/10/2026 07:20

Minimum wage going up just means everything goes up. Since labour came to power our debt has increased. The type of arse who doesn’t use head phones is likely to be the type of arse who’ll tell the train guard where to go, so I can’t see how it will be implemented. Antisocial behaviour needs tackling, knife crime needs tackling, disaffected youth need tackling, drugs and in particular drug driving needs tackling. Infrastructure needs tackling, water companies need tackling….how much sewage into waterways? We have laws, they are not enforced. Quite honestly judges are a joke, rape someone and destroy their mental health, we’ll slap the perpetrator(s) on the wrist and tell them not to do it again. Shitty behaviour by the police needs tackling, incompetence in the NHS needs tackling, behaviour in schools need tackling. Homelessness needs understanding and tackling, disability welfare needs a drastic overhaul as those that need the help, very often can’t access it. There is so much that needs sorting but our streets are not paved with gold, and that debt is being kicked further down the road for future governments to sort out, it’s so bloody boring.

"The only country consolidating its debt"

What nonsense is this?

The IMF said the UK "basically stands out, along with India" when it comes to addressing the problem and by 2031 it is projected to have the lowest annual borrowing of the G7 group of countries, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US.

Three things we've learnt about the UK economy from the IMF

The influential economics body has upgraded its UK growth forecast for this year, but risks remain.

I agree. I read the recent post about parking fines, and after just being screwed over by one car park (was moving house to the redirected mail didn't get to me in time), I thought good on you lad! Then saw loads of people whinging about boats underneath it. Everything comes back to boats. Like he is not allowed to address anything else.

Absolutely! I detest these parking company vultures who are all out for profit. All carparks need to be pay on exit, it might actually help trade in town and city centres as you are not constantly looking at the time checking for when your ticket expires.

im affected by the higher rate atm
and my wage isn’t even high it’s just gone up over the years to where I’m now at 40% for just being a normal worker
that pisses me off

But Labour haven’t increased tax or NIC for employees?

Jaxinabox · 20/10/2026 17:42

I’d love to feel positive about him. Just haven’t witnessed anything to be positive about yet. Telling people to wear headphones wasn’t one of the things that really worried me about the future of the UK. That said, I’m prepared to wait and see what the budget reveals.

He’s been in 3 months!

Fringe upon fringe issues. Almost meaningless in the broader scheme of things.

Almost.

Not completely.

Small gestures matter to people.

Badbadbunny · 21/10/2026 07:50

Because the new rules won’t be enforced. That’s the problem. We already have lots of laws and rules that are ignored. Such as the shoplifting epidemic, money laundering shops, illegal e-bikes, traffic laws, etc. If he announced more police on the streets and more council enforcement wardens, along with a functioning court system, then I’d be impressed. But not for announcing new laws that will generally be ignored.

Electra10E · 21/10/2026 07:51

You mistake the IMF’s words of encouragement with how taxpayers and business are feeling in the real world.

Badbadbunny · 21/10/2026 07:52

BurntBroccoli · 21/10/2026 07:45

But Labour haven’t increased tax or NIC for employees?

Employer costs reduce profits so less money for pay rises,

Fiscal drag means more people dragged into higher rates of tax due to normal wage rises that often don’t even cover cost of living rises, so leaving them doubly worse off.

The IMF also said the UK should cut spending, rather than tax banks in the upcoming budget. This morning’s data shows inflation up to 3.5% (higher than expected) and national debt topping £3 trillion for the first time ever, with the budget deficit widening to £97.8 billion - £6 billion wider than the OBR predicted in March. Yep, all going swimmingly.

Worse offenders are often local council owned car parks in town centres. Ours is awful, pay and display on entry, and latest wheeze is to restrict the free time for blue badge holders so they’ll have to return to put money in the machine if they’re longer than expected - not good when lots of hospital patients use a council car park and don’t know how many hours they’ll be stuck in a waiting room! It’s not as if their car parks are full, they’re usually pretty empty we’ve barely any shops left yet they keep hiking charges.

The couple of private car parks are pay on exit which are more popular for that reason.

Someone needs to tell Labour that they can’t tax out of recession which is where we’re heading! We need growth and we won’t get that with their politics of hate and envy against businesses!

histrainersbythedoor · 20/10/2026 17:22

Ah, one of these!

He is very clearly multitasking - there is a budget coming next week. Very clearly a lot of these things will be addressed then. But doing things that benefit everyday people will help.

I get public transport everyday. All it will take is one or two of the kids that sit and watch TikTok on their phones to get a fine before they stop. Same with the trains. Are you really of the belief that if something doesn’t benefit you directly, it shouldn’t be done?

It’s not going to benefit anyone though. There (I believe) is a rule on trains about not playing music out loud. It isn’t enforced because they simply don’t have staff to patrol everywhere all the time. The same thing will happen on busses. It’s not enforceable.

i think people have no faith left as this country and all those in charge are just one big disappointment

I find it depressing that some people aren't capable of understanding this.

Are you familiar with the “cliff-edge” problem in our tax system? There are various points where earning slightly more makes you significantly worse off.

VAT rules have it, childcare allowance rules have it, pensions credit has it, carers allowance has it, personal savings allowance has it, there are more.

At least some of the complaints you hear are probably about that.

cliff edge, you might come in for some criticism….

Bonkers, I know….

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

In his first speech he said “radical change” is needed to get the country back on track.

His main radical idea was devolution of powers away from the centre.

Since then he’s made a string of announcements as PM that are surprising in how parochial they are, even if they are good ideas.

His chancellor has also been downplaying what will happen in the budget: a steady-as-she-goes budget.

It’s incoherent.

Maybe this is how he builds political capital and he’ll deliver bigger things later, but that’s not usually how govt works. If you don’t do your big ideas early, you never do them.
