Owns tape measure if you’re selling clothes?

If you are selling on vinted should you own a tape measure? Being a bit short I always check the length of a skirt before buying it. 3 sellers today told me they can’t measure the length as they don’t own a tape measure !! One said to me it was “just below the knee” - oh ok then lol. Frustrating or aibu

Yeah thats annoying. Youd think they'd have a ruler at least

FookFookFook · 20/10/2026 08:51

Yabu. It’s vinted. People trying to make a few pennies. Professional sellers you would not be unreasonable.

GreenSedan · 20/10/2026 08:54

The ambiguity around sizing on Vinted is my biggest bugbear with the site.

I'm a 14 so I look in the 12-14 grouping for clothes. The number of sellers who don't bother to say whether the item is a 12 or a 14, and also don't post a pic of the label so I can see for myself is very annoying.

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 20/10/2026 08:58

Not specifically for Vinted, but I don't understand how people can manage in life without owning a tape measure! It's not just useful for clothes, it's essential for buying anything that has to fit in a particular space, also if you want to do any kind of DIY beyond assembling a flat pack.

It isn't as though a tape measure is an expensive purchase, they're a couple of quid to buy.

And, yes, if you are selling clothes online you should include measurements. Manufacturers have a case to answer on sizing inconsistency, it oughtn't to be as needed as it is, but in the world we live in, you can't rely on the measurements of a 'size 12' or a 'size 10' being at all consistent; and length is also important, for which there is no real standard in women's clothing.

MagnoliaParks · 20/10/2026 08:59

Most phones have a measure function on them nowadays so they could measure with that!

Floatlikeafeather2 · 20/10/2026 09:05

It is a bit pathetic but apparently not limited to Vinted sellers. I am very short and, being disabled, have very clear requirements from my clothes. I was trying to buy a coat and needed to know the lengths. Some companies publish this, some don't. I really liked a particular one but it didn't say how long it was on the blurb so I emailed to ask. They couldn't tell me but apparently it "shouldn't be a problem because the information states what size the model is wearing". ???????

PrimaniTu · 20/10/2026 09:06

YANBU

And I hate the excuse that an M&S 10 is an M&S 10. No it’s not as different colours of the same item can be different sizes.

I also hate the excuse I’m on selling it for a few quid. Yes you may only get £3 but the person buying gas paid an extra £4-5 for “insurance” and postage. So your £3 item costs them £7-8. Not stupidly cheap when it arrives and it’s too small/long etc.

Cherrysoup · 20/10/2026 09:08

This drives me nuts on Vinted! I’m not hugely tall but I do have long legs so ‘regular’ length is often too short. If I’m selling, I do inside leg of trousers/jeans. I measure dresses/skirts and pit to pit on the chest. If I ask and they respond that they don’t have a tape measure, but they’re my height and it’s the perfect length, I’d walk unless I can find the measurements on the brand website. I doubt their leg length is identical to mine. I find it odd that people don’t have tape measures, not even a metal one in the garage or a child’s school ruler etc.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 20/10/2026 09:10

If they don’t own a tape measure I always just ask how tall they are and where it sits on them.

I’ve had this recently, trying to buy a particular pair of jeans. Plus, people are still uploading stuff under the wrong size, so I thought I’d found the right size, opened the full advert, it’s 2 sizes out. Recent advert, not from months ago when medium=10.

5289843DM · 20/10/2026 09:11

I've never bought from vinted, but you'd think if someone didn't have a clothing tape measure, then they'd have a ruler or a metal tape measure in the shed!

mondaytosunday · 20/10/2026 09:18

My DD buys a lot on Vinted and the question she asks most is for measurements! Particularly skirts. She’s not short - any woman needs to know! So absolutely yes!

SilenceInside · 20/10/2026 09:20

I am surprised that people don't have a DIY type tape measure, or a clothes/body measurement tape measure or even a 30cm ruler available to them! Dunelm do a basic clothes tape measure for £2.

I won't buy if the seller hasn't shown the size label, and ideally measurements - particularly if it's not a brand I know well. Most of the things that I sell are for less than £20 but it takes moments to list them properly, including measurements.

The one measurement I wish people would put, and I wish that Vinted had a specific category/search for, is leg length on trousers. I find that "regular" can be so varied that it's hard to know what length to expect.

Yup same. The amount of sellers who don’t put the actual size in either the title or description. I end up scrolling through pictures trying to see the label only to find it’s the wrong size or there is no label pic.

Needacalminginfluence · 20/10/2026 09:23

I'm absolutely amazed by this.

To me a tape measure comes into the category of " every home should have one " items. In fact I've got multiple : in my knitting bag, in my sewing box, with my DIY stuff, in the wee room I use as a study. Plus multiple rulers actually, left over from when my now adult son was at school.
I think it must be one of those generational things. More nornal for older people like me.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 20/10/2026 09:10

If they don’t own a tape measure I always just ask how tall they are and where it sits on them.

But that doesn't always work because people's proportions vary. I am short but proportionately I have long legs.

Housewife2010 · 20/10/2026 09:33

They may only be getting a few pounds for the item, but don't they realise that they would probably sell a lot faster if they put their measurements on? I bought a cashmere cardigan within 3 minutes of seeing it on Vinted last week. There were clear photos showing the condition & the label, photos showing the width & length. There was no way that I would have bought it so quickly without that information. The seller had only listed in within the last half hour too. Maybe the sellers who don't bother giving measurements aren't interested in a quick sale?

FancyKeyboard · 20/10/2026 09:37

I do have a tape measure but if I have a lot of things for sale and you want measurements on an in-demand item, you may have to wait. It doesn't mean I don't care about selling it, but I just may not have the time right away between kids, work and clubs. Yep, I could lose the sale but you don't have to buy.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 20/10/2026 09:43

Sellers who don't post a photo of the sodding label are my number one pet hate on vinted. Closely followed by those who list items that are stained but say "it'll possibly come out in the wash". Well I'm guessing you tried that and it didn't so now you're just trying it on.

And I always show measurements on any clothes I sell 😇.

I am over 70 and I've got several. I also keep one in my handbag.

I expect we both did dressmaking at school. I come across so many people now who don't have even basic sewing skills, like turning up hems, narrowing trousers, replacing zips, using a sewing machine, curtain making etc.

heidi696 · 20/10/2026 10:00

How do people manage without a tape measure lol. I’m always measuring things !! Not least things I see on Temu after being surprised at the size of them when they arrived a few times

I also have a couple of tape measures around the house, however realistically I don't think knitting bags and sewing boxes are terribly common these days, and many/ most (?) people don't have a study.

SJM1988 · 20/10/2026 10:02

I find most people on vinted cant be bothered if you ask sizing questions and say its only £xx its not worth it.
I always provide measurements if asked and I'm also not sure how someone can have a home and not a tape measure - surely its staple part of a sewing kits you need!

Mosaic123 · 20/10/2026 10:06

I so agree about the sizing. 12 to 14. I am definitely not a 12. They don't categorise into 14 to be 16.

If the seller doesn't bother to say what size it is, or show a photo of the label I would scroll on.

Measurements are best though.

Ablondiebutagoody · 20/10/2026 10:07

The majority of people selling stuff seem to be morons. I was trying to buy a second hand bike for DS. Hardly anybody lists the frame size which is literally written on the bike. I gave up.
