Owns tape measure if you’re selling clothes?

If you are selling on vinted should you own a tape measure? Being a bit short I always check the length of a skirt before buying it. 3 sellers today told me they can’t measure the length as they don’t own a tape measure !! One said to me it was “just below the knee” - oh ok then lol. Frustrating or aibu

I find most people on vinted cant be bothered if you ask sizing questions and say its only £xx its not worth it.
I always provide measurements if asked and I'm also not sure how someone can have a home and not a tape measure - surely its staple part of a sewing kits you need!

Completely agree, and as for 'it's only £xx, it's not worth it' - it doesn't matter if it only costs 1p, if it doesn't fit it's no use and the purchase is pointless.

If it's too large/long you might be able to alter it but if it's too small/short there's usually nothing at all you can do unless you can find matching fabric to insert a panel, and that's a lot of hassle and not a straightforward sewing job.

Needing to know measurements is common in most purchases, not just clothes. I have tape measures to hand anywhere in the house . IKEA have paper tape measurers for free. They would do the job. Edit; I bet most packs of Christmas crackers contain one!

I am over 70 and I've got several. I also keep one in my handbag.

I expect we both did dressmaking at school. I come across so many people now who don't have even basic sewing skills, like turning up hems, narrowing trousers, replacing zips, using a sewing machine, curtain making etc.

Yes i did do dressmaking at school!
With a very intimidating teacher!
I can't say I enjoyed it but it taught me invaluable skills. For many years I made clothes for myself. I haven't done that for a long time but the knowledge still remains and I do small things like turning up hems and repairing clothes.

I was also taught knitting and crochet at home as a very young child and by 8 I would knit the sleeves of a jumper or cardigan my mother was making for me , before knitting my own complete garments by about 10.

I've had so much pleasure out of making things for myself. At one time I also used to do pattern testing for the Patons company so actually got paid for it. That was very interesting. And I did knitting for a company that specialised in hand made cashmere garments. I didn't enjoy that though - it was akin to slave labour because of the time pressure.

I do think it's a shame that passing on dressmaking and knitting/ crochet skills isn't the norm these days.

I think there are lots of things that can hold up a sale - poor photos, not enough photos, sparse description, unclear condition etc. Some sellers are good and some aren't. Some sellers take time over their listings to try and cover what different buyers might want to see and presumably they sell more than the careless ones.

Vinted is mostly individuals selling their own stuff. It isn't a shop. Whilst it would be nice for buyers to have uniform, consistent information when buying discounted stuff, I don't think that's a realistic expectation on Vinted.

I find it weird too, and I often ask about heel heights on shoes because people rarely put them in the listing. I

How do people manage without a tape measure lol. I’m always measuring things !! Not least things I see on Temu after being surprised at the size of them when they arrived a few times

I have a little pull-out tape measure that is on my person all the time. It goes into my pocket in the morning when I get dressed and onto my dressing table at night. For good measure, I have another one in my handbag as well. I've never thought of it as odd - it's very useful.

Arlanymor · 20/10/2026 13:33

Smartphones have free tape measure apps - not sure why people wouldn't just use them. I tell you what is helpful in terms of scale though - put a coke can in a photo alongside the item - everyone knows the size of a coke can, but some people can't wrap their heads around specific number measurements!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/10/2026 14:26

Agreed with all the above!
Also, fibre content. Don’t say “wool” when you mean “knitted acrylic”.

No, selling for the last 3 years at least twice weekly, I was asked once for measurements.
It depends, if I sell something for £40, I'll measure it but if item is £3 etc - it's wasting of my time.
Even when measured - it can be too big/small, as it depends on materials and elastane.

That is odd to not own a tape measure, or a ruler. Always had one.

BlushingBrightly · 20/10/2026 14:48

You can buy a soft tape measure for under a pound. 🙄 If you're selling stuff, don't be half arsed and lazy on this very low level thing

Iloveeverycat · 20/10/2026 15:13

I really don't get that people don't have a tape measure. Every shop the clothes are a different size. If I sell anything I always put all the measurements. I use it a lot and so do my daughters.

If it has elastine I always put the range measurements it will fit.

I also have a couple of tape measures around the house, however realistically I don't think knitting bags and sewing boxes are terribly common these days, and many/ most (?) people don't have a study.

I have a sewing box

But you can say in the listing what the fabric is and whether it has stretch. As long as you give measurements people can measure a similar garment for comparison. You would expect some stretch and leeway in a t-shirt, and also people have different preferences as to how tight a fit they want. So if they are looking for a blue t-shirt, they can measure a black t-shirt they already have that they like the fit of, and find similar.

Ineedanewsofa · 20/10/2026 15:29

I only own a soft one because it came with a Net-a-Porter order about 15 years ago. I also don’t put measurements on Vinted listings but most of the things I sell are cheap high street bits so I rarely get asked.
I do know my height in cm and inside leg measurement so can give a quick answer re fit. I will measure things if people ask nicely

Housewife2010 · 22/10/2026 08:45

I've been selling on eBay for years. I always take clear photos of the labels with the size and fabric composition. I also take ones with a tape measure attached with clothes pegs so the width and length can be seen. It hardly takes any longer. It's also less hassle than having to get the garment out of my eBay storage boxes and measure if a buyer asks me.
When buying, if I can see all the information I need, I will often buy quickly.
