Adults at petting zoos/farms/kids days out

1000 replies

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 12:42

Has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in grown adults (many in late teens and 20s) going on days out aimed at kids/young families? I’m finding it increasingly irritating - small children having to queue behind grown adults to stroke rabbits or see tanks of fish.

(Exception where there is clearly a disability at play)

Given how many animals are kept in unsuitable conditions, how many animals there are in rescue etc. I would rather adults pop over and stroke some animals in a safe environment and enjoy that rather than trying and failing to keep them themselves.

I have a rabbit, its bloody antisocial. I go to petting farms to stroke someone else's more companionable rabbit.

I had a rabbit as a kid.
He was a little terror.
Hobbies included nipping ankles, swatting the cat, running around the garden refusing to go in and sitting and staring looking like a creepy statue.
Bless him 🐇

It’s a childish activity. It seems to be in the wider picture of adults acting like kids.

Fuck offff. Since when is stroking an animal or watching them a childish activity? It's not and this is what is wrong with the world, that adults can't play or have fun. Fuck that.

There have been at least two threads on here about lone adults going to see Disney films at the cinema... like it is wrong and should not be allowed. One was about a man, and assuming he must have been a paedophile.

Well it is odd.

I also see lone adults going on the swings at the park.. don’t get me started

Totally bang on. I’m sure the oddballs disagreeing with you would also think it’s fine for two 40 year old blokes to be playing on a seesaw together while you’re standing there waiting with your toddler.

SiegfriedSassoon · 19/10/2026 13:40

If adults aren't becoming more childish then why is there such a big market for hideous pyjamas with the Grinch or Mickey whatever on them, in full array of adults sizes? Can't just be teens, the sizes go too big.
Again, not saying it's wrong, but my grandparents wouldn't have made such fools of themselves. They dressed with dignity.

CapricornCarol · 19/10/2026 13:40

I bet the rabbits prefer being petted by the adults rather than than being squished by some ham fisted toddler.

StillgotmyiPod · 19/10/2026 13:39

Why is it sad? Please explain.

Why is anything sad? Because it’s for kids, or indicates an adult with issues tbh - in this case a childish and slightly selfish mindset

You could not be more unreasonable if you tried quite honestly. I will go wherever I want to, whatever age I am. And if I want to go to a petting zoo and pet a small lamb I will!

I hate this sneery attitude that anyone over 12 isn't allowed to have fun or do anything that children may enjoy. I bet you sneer at adults who like Disney, and who play video games too @ExtraHotDoubleShot ! Hmm

@Needmorelego

"I like rabbits.
I live in a flat so can't exactly keep one as a pet."

I'm not actually recommending it, but I had a friend who did. It chewed through a lot of wires (never electrocuted itself) and was not litterbox-trained, but friend didn't seem to mind. It was called Bun.

I had a friend who had a whole gang on indoor bunnies.
Her house had an interesting smell 😂

I spent a lot of time alone as a late teen, early 20s at night at the local swing park smoking weed 🤣

Oh God yes 😂 or things like Minions. Got to laugh at them…

I’m pushing my own kids out the way to stroke a guinea pig, never mind anyone else’s.

One of the most popular things for foreign tourists to do here is pet Highland Cattle.

Only adult with issues are allowed to see nice things?

Are you for real? WTAF?

Bitsostuff · 19/10/2026 13:42

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 13:39

Lots of things. I like restaurants, pubs, hiking, the cinema, camping, walking my dog, making jewellery.

Children go to or do all those things.

CrystalSingerFan · 19/10/2026 13:42

Upping the age range a bit, my late mother was in a (reasonably nice) dementia care home. The home arranged for some little organisation to bring in a range of petting animals (not just cute fluffy ones) for the residents to interact with. My mother was a cat'n'dog lover, and certainly provided rabbits for my youngest sisters. She appreciated that, AFAIK.

You aren't explaining why you think it's for kids. There are places that are obviously just for kids - playgrounds and soft plays, but I don't understand why you think a petting zoo is just for kids

I guess Goat Yoga is off the menu. Far too silly for grown ups.

Edited

Puppy yoga is on my bucket list, preferably Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers and Newfies 😀

Well it is strange. My DH or my dad would be terribly self conscious alone in a cinema where they were showing a Disney film, it is setting yourself up to look like a predator.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 12:53

Yes, it’s childish. I would feel silly making a 4 year old wait so I could hold a rabbit. I’m a grown woman!

so let the 4 to go first and then hold the rabbit.

WestwardHo1 · 19/10/2026 13:42

I do think adults have become more childish. MIL and her friends have become quite strange in recent years, going to escape rooms and theme parks. And yet 20 years ago she had much more adult pursuits like watercolouring and going to Chelsea flower show. It's peculiar. I wonder if people are regressing as a stress response to life.

Or maybe as they have got older they have stopped giving a fuck about people judging them?

GooGooMuckMuck · 19/10/2026 13:43

Because Disney is for everyone.
And PJs are PJs. I can't get worked up about what people have on theirs. You stick to your lacy nightie, I will wear my PJs with spooky ghosts on.

That doesn't answer the question.

Why is it childish for an adult to want to stroke a rabbit?

You can't just say "it's sad because it's sad" or "it's childish because it's childish". That's just circular.

Please define exactly what makes a petting zoo an improper venue for an adult to enjoy. What is wrong with wanting to hold a cute animal? What is the age limit to stroke a rabbit?
