Adults at petting zoos/farms/kids days out

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 12:42

Has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in grown adults (many in late teens and 20s) going on days out aimed at kids/young families? I’m finding it increasingly irritating - small children having to queue behind grown adults to stroke rabbits or see tanks of fish.

(Exception where there is clearly a disability at play)

I didn’t know you could have them. I’d be scared they might let off their famous smell 😁 Beautiful glossy coat.

They generally don't want to spray you because it takes them 10-14 days to recharge a load. If they were in the wild they'd be defenceless for two weeks so it's a last resort thing.

Instead he will stomp at you and put his tail high up, which rather than being scary is just very cute instead.

Vegetablespringrolls · 19/10/2026 14:45

If I've paid £12.50 to get in to one of these places I'm going to be holding a rabbit and I'm going down the slide as well.

Clearly the adults didn’t learn that! Or much at all - come on, it’s for kids, let them enjoy it. It’s the same category as adults that are obsessed with Disney, or get upset if they don’t get the birthday cake they want.

Now you're talking shite. I suppose if I ever have grandchildren, I'd do the Disney thing again (grudgingly), but to not get the birthday cake you want? A travesty. I don't eat a lot of cake, and on the one day a year there's one that's all about me? You'd better believe it needs to be the one I want.

Puhpuhpuhpuh · 19/10/2026 14:46

Farms and zoos aren’t kids’ activities, though. They can come and enjoy them along with everyone else. Obviously, they should wait in turn to view/pet the animals. They don’t get priority just because they’re kids.

It’s a childish activity. It seems to be in the wider picture of adults acting like kids.

There is nothing childish about learning about, spending time with, or enjoying the company of non-human animals.

Because you say so. Ok.

Loub1987 · 19/10/2026 14:50

It’s a business and these adults are customers. I personally don’t really get why an adult would want to do this but I also don’t really understand an adult wanting to go to a theme park. My friends all disagree with me so I assume i am in the minority!

I really like making sandcastles on the beach which I suppose is quite childish…

This is my boy.

I don't even have to go to a petting zoo!

Oh my lord. Gorgeous.
I've wanted a skunk since the internet became a thing and I learned how good a pet they make!

I couldn't, because my dog has a high prey drive. Maybe one day! Such a beautiful, fascinating creature.

Our local university has well being days when, amongst other things, the students can pet alpacas or walk a dog. It's so popular that they've extended the programme.

It's incredibly beneficial for young adults to have interaction with animals, especially if they are away from family, maybe haven't made friends yet, or struggling with stress.

DS's university did the same with dogs.

Someone local has a skunk, it is forever escaping and there will be photos of its escapades on the local Facebook page!

You should try going to DisneyLand, my kids can't even get on any rides without 40 year old men and women with mickey mouse ears plastered to their bonce clogging up the lines and getting in the way of all the exhibits.

This is one of the reasons I’ve never been, Disney adults give me the ick.

WestwardHo1 · 19/10/2026 14:56

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 13:45

Does your cat live at a petting farm?

Yeah, not really a relevant question is it? The point quite clearly was that animals themselves might prefer interaction with a calm sensible adult rather than being manhandled by a sticky overexcited four year old.

rainbowstardrops · 19/10/2026 14:56

Are you on the windup OP?! If not, you sound utterly joyless.
For what it’s worth, I have a close relative who is an animal keeper at a children’s attraction that has a small zoo and small farm, as well as a water slide etc. Are the adults not allowed to queue amongst children to have fun on it?
They have various animal experiences that you can pay for, including a keeper experience where they can feed the goats, hold rabbits etc. Whilst majority are children that attend, they also have lots of adults pay to do them too.
It’s not weird in the slightest! I find your opinion on it quite sad really. As long as everyone takes their turn then I really don’t see the issue!

I went to Disney once before I had kids, it didn’t occur to me I shouldn’t (I did go with the kids once as well). There are some extremists though, who apparently get themselves into large debt for it. That, to me, is the crazy bit.

Rubbish. I like animals and I've been to places like that on my own. It's not a childish activity. Your children will just have to take their turn. I'm not going to stop going to petting farms because people like you don't like it.

I've a degree in zoology and a PhD. in marine biology. I didn't realise I was being childish when I visit an aquarium to look at 'tanks of fish'!

Please ask the squirrels to pass this along. Stop digging up @CrystalSingerFan's potted plants to bury their walnuts. My heucheras do NOT benefit from it.

Next time I pop to the park I’ll relay that request for you!

So if you don’t have children you’re not allowed to go to farms or zoos or safari parks or theme parks or basically anywhere where children may be going to have to wait to take a turn on something?

Oh you're allowed to go and watch according to @ExtraHotDoubleShot . 🙄

Maybe you should. You might unclench a bit.

Kids can queue with everyone else, suck it up, buttercup.

Your comment beat me to it! Was going to say exactly the same 🤣

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 19/10/2026 15:06

Very very fucking unreasonable!

Animals are wonderful & kids are able to wait in line.

ilovesooty · 19/10/2026 15:09

SiegfriedSassoon · 19/10/2026 13:14

Having had my children over 17 years, it's definitely changed a lot in terms of more childless adults going to places that traditionally were more aimed at children. For example, when we first started going to Centre Parcs 17 years ago it was very wholesome, simple and family orientated. But I wouldn't go there now as the market has changed and I don't want to be around the people that frequent it now.

Look at all the adults that go to Disney with no children, and are happy for little kids to be waiting their turn while grown adults preen and pose with the characters for photos.

I'd feel very silly making children wait to pet a rabbit while I, a woman in my 40s, sat and had my turn. But each to their own and they are perfectly within their rights to do so.

I do think adults have become more childish. MIL and her friends have become quite strange in recent years, going to escape rooms and theme parks. And yet 20 years ago she had much more adult pursuits like watercolouring and going to Chelsea flower show. It's peculiar. I wonder if people are regressing as a stress response to life.

Edited

What's childish about going to escape rooms?

Just spotted your name.

Anne McCaffrey fan?

Hell, yeah!

Although only the first book. (Plus the dragons, obvs...)

Akshally, just editing this, the dragons have NOT aged as well as Crystal Singer, which is still brilliant.
