Who was wrong

I’m in the supermarket with my boyfriend and looking for a self serve till. I spot a free one and am about to start scanning when a woman walks up and “tells us off” for queue jumping. She points at a large line which I hadn’t noticed and rants on about it. So my boyfriend tells her to calm down which makes her even madder. I start laughing at her ridiculousness. Then a member of staff comes over and apologises - to her!

I mean I get that we didn’t realise there was a queue but talk about an overreaction!

Was me and my boyfriend wrong to laugh at her?

I don't see the point of reverses.

Me neither.

sideorderofgossip · 19/10/2026 10:02

@PerhapsPerhapsMaybe you and bf were in the wrong. You should have simply said ‘sorry, I didn’t see it’ and walked towards the end of it.

This situation happens regularly at self checkouts and people generally politely correct their mistake.

Thank you all for your views. Full disclosure, for which I apologise because I know it’s annoying…but this is a reverse. The reason was because I was genuinely curious to know if I was in the wrong. The young man was incredibly condescending in his “calm down dear” manner and hopefully his girlfriend may eventually see that as a red flag rather than laugh along with his misogynistic attitude.

You saying it's a reverse only makes me think this is either a creative writing exercise, or you wanted people to tell you what an angel you were but were too cowardly to just ask for validation. Either way it does not reflect well on your character.

Ponoka7 · 19/10/2026 10:49

Next time pick up something essential from the shopping they haven't paid for and walk back to the queue with it. They've inconvenienced people, so can have a bit back. Yes, I've done similar in RL. A lot of young women don't get sexist behaviour until they are older.

Yep. She went batshit over a nothingburger. She could certainly have said something, and then you'd have said "Oh, I'm so sorry". But she chose to throw a hysterical tantrum, so she gets whatever reaction she gets.

She has very definitely made similar mistakes in her life, no doubt at all, and she'd have gone absolutely apeshit if someone had approached her shouting and carrying on about it.

Laughing at her was great, actually. There is nothing better than just cheerfully laughing at someone going off their head about nothing. Puts them firmly in their place and ruins their attempted moment of bullying glory.

Are you ok?

Ayarreet · 19/10/2026 10:59

I fucking hate reverses 😡

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 19/10/2026 11:01

Having noted this is a reverse, this means by your own admission, you 'ranted' at them - that wasn't necessary. We don't know how they would have reacted if you'd spoken to them calmly.

They were in the wrong and should have apologised, but you didn't give them a chance if you went straight in with a rant, rather than calmly saying: 'Excuse me, there's a queue for these tills."

It’s not impossible. I gave the facts. They queue jumped in a busy supermarket. I don’t know if they were unaware or just being CFers but in any case I let them know - without raising my voice but quite clearly annoyed - that there was a massive queue. He then told me to calm down with exaggerated hand gestures whilst she laughed. Then she asked why there was a free till to which I replied that it takes a moment or two to walk from the front of the line to the free till. They then walked off giggling as a shop assistant came towards us and he apologised to me saying that they were out of order. That’s it. That’s what happened. That is no different to my OP reverse or not.

But you didn't just give the facts. You used phrases like ranting and ridiculous, which are very loaded words. So it gives a very distorted point of view. Which is why reverses are annoying and pointless.

LilyBunch25 · 19/10/2026 11:41

Annoyed to find I've commented on what turns out to be a reverse. Really do not like them.

💯

So you can't trust the replies because everyone just wanted to lay in to the woman and her boyfriend. They didn't actually think you were in the right.

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 19/10/2026 12:36

A reverse is such an odd thing to do.

What does it prove?

Is it so the op can protect themselves by gauging the majority opinion as favourable before they reveal themselves?

OneHazelBird · 19/10/2026 14:40

I don’t really mind reverses as sometimes it does give unbiased replies but it can get a bit confusing sometimes, especially ones with polls as some posters read just the OP and done read all of the posts.

But I do think sexes should be removed when possible.

A man angrily ‘telling off’and ‘ranting’ because someone made a mistake is not going to get as much sympathy as when a woman does it.

And the fact that it was a man who told OP to calm down, has got posters backs up, even though she was much ruder and ‘started it’.

Do you really think there's no relevant difference between a man angrily ranting at a woman and a woman ranting at another woman?

And how do reverses give unbiased replies? If you believe posters are biased against OPs then the responses are still skewed.

Takethehuntingquiche · 19/10/2026 15:53

So once again the OP has disappeared when they realise the thread hasn't gone quite the way they wanted...

Firefly1987 · 19/10/2026 20:42

TheDivergentEnigma · 19/10/2026 06:15

The mistake is not the issue; it's how it's handled.

OP laughed in the face of the person pointing it out, clearly angry that many other people noticed the queue, but OP not only missed it but also continued to make a joke of it. She made a mistake, yes, but then handled it very badly.

A very quick apology and a move to the back of the queue was all that was needed.

True but it's quite hard not to get defensive when you're being yelled at. They jumped a queue by accident, it's not like they kicked the lady's puppy. Turns out it was all a reverse anyway!
