Moving abroad has made me realise how bloody dire the UK is

We moved abroad 4 months ago and after the normal wobbles and adjustments I am now shocked at how different (and much better!) life is. We have considerably more spending money despite paying for private school and healthcare (which are much much better than the UK). It’s safer, considerably cleaner, better public services and much better food quality.

already I can’t see us ever going back and already want to explore somewhere new eventually! But if anyone is feeling low and despondent about the uk which we really were and gets an opportunity (or has a transferable job) I would 100000% recommend looking into it.

i wish we had done it 10 years ago tbh. AIBU to never come back bar the odd visit to see family and friends?!

I can't be bothered to reply to the Islamists.

There are Islamists in the thread?

Can you point them out please as I’m having trouble recognising them?

The UK is a poverty stricken shit hole. Massively crime infested in all major cities, miserable people going about miserable lives. They can't even afford ceiling fans and screens, apparently, let alone air con. They act like you've got two heads when you point out that air con is normal in all first world countries.

They whine about the heat and the cold as houses are badly built, constantly complain about the horrendous prices of everything, the awful job market, the awful housing market, their dead and done national health system, and their absolutely awful schools, and yet they keep pretending it's normal.

They will never get it. They are fish who have been swimming their entire lives in a dirty aquarium. If they moved to a clean aquarium - a nice place to live - the shock would nearly kill them.

Your honesty is refreshing, normally British people don't like it when people criticise the country. Just try and say the food is garbage and you'll get hundreds of angry little Englanders frothing at the mouth to tell you that Yorkshire puddings are actually the food of the gods.

Sorry but nothing Britain makes will ever compare to something like a good chicken Tikka Masala, for example.

Edited

What a ludicrous post!
Chicken tikka! Ha, ha. 😂
It's born in Birmingham.
I suggest you now retire gracefully, Debbie.

I’m really quite sure that the people who stole from me believed the “rule of law” didn’t apply to them.
You were stolen from and the police actually turned up? Investigated? Took forensics? Really?

The 'rule of law' is the opposite of 'the rule of men'. The term means that the legal system is clear, applies to all and is applied without fear or favour, cannot be bought and cannot be suborned by the wealthy/powerful. That the law doesn't arbitrarily change and nor can you be arbitrarily arrested. That agreements are backed by law and this is actionable in the courts (which is one reason companies like to be settled in the UK where such rules apply). The 'rule of men', OTOH, can be capricious, may rely on the goodness, virtue, sense of a particular ruler and when he/she is gone so is the legal system.
It's nothing to do with whether the police catch burglars - though it is nice if they do.

The official age of marriage for both men and women is 18 and there are steps to go through before you can get married that involve proof of age. I do believe however there is a provision in place for a judge to give permission for those under 18 to marry if it’s in their best interests and I suspect I know what those interests would be. It would never ever involve children though.

I think if this happens it’s all done behind closed doors, it’s done in secrecy and would be seen as a criminal act if discovered. I have never heard of it in all the years I’ve been here but I will make it a point to ask my social worker friends about the prevalence. It should never happen.

The girls are trafficked in, often from the Yemen (which we know still has child marriage to very old men). The girls are behind closed doors. I go by 'girls not brides', Unicef, Save the children, UNFPA and work done by individual women who have escaped. Domestic violence is a massive issue there, but it's behind closed doors. Any society living under Sharia law isn't going to benefit women.

You don't worry about living so close to a likely ear zone?

To be fair, I live right in the middle of an ear zone, one on each side. I find it just fine.

So where you live is paradise, presumably. The health system is partly broken in the UK because of years of austerity, which neo-liberal capitalism swears will bring prosperity, when the only way to bring prosperity is to ditch austerity and invest in the bloody country. Look at France just now!
And most of us don't live in shit holes. I live in a medium sized city. There is a working bus service (orientated to people working, which is a pain but functioning), lots of activities which are informal or organised by the council, lovely parks, some super pubs, two in walking distance. Very little crime where I live and everyone I know is hardly in the country, if not skiing they are off round the Med, or visiting India and points east. Not miserable at all.
And I would rather live in the UK than in a country where my affluence is supported by slave labour, thanks.

We’ve moved to the Oman which I know mumsnet hates the ME but so far it’s been great. Husbands insurance is covered, ours was £3000 for myself and 3 kids for very good coverage. No I will take Arabic lessons and kids learn it in school but everyone speaks English!

The UK is a shithole dump but i would never visit the middle east let alone live there.
But good on you getting out of the UK

Went And lived abroad for 18 months
Hated it and came back
So polar opposite
if you were living in Paris at the moment I doubt you’d be saying the same thing

Sounds like most French, Belgians, maybe Dutch.
I sat on a plane recently next to a German moaning because all the Poles had gone home so there were no tradespeople and because he could find a dentist

Thank you for that.

I’m going to investigate it further. I’m fortunate I have friends who are social workers, along with one friend who has a very senior role in the safeguarding of children.

And the domestic violence? Unfortunately wherever in the world you find men and women there will be domestic violence. Thankfully though there’s provision in place for women to be able to report it via various channels.

I suspect however that like most places in the world women are afraid to report domestic abuse because of the social stigma attached to it.

As for Sharia law? After 50 years of living here I can’t say I’ve felt it.

The women of Piddington have more to fear from their brothers and husbands than the refugees taking sanctuary nearby. No need to spread any more xenophobic fear to the ignorant masses, if the government thought these people were legitimately dangerous they wouldn't let them in the country.

Don't be so patronising. The 'ignorant masses' are perfectly well aware that decanting any large group of young, unattached men in an area is going to cause problems.

That is a rather large word salad. Unfortunately it in no way changes the fact that, yes, in the UK, some people steal things and no, nothing happens to them. And I think most people would rather live in a country where theft wasn’t so prevalent or so unchallenged.

I'm not miserable at all, and could easily afford ceiling fans, screens, or air-con thank you. I have to say though that your obsession with these items seems quite odd.

If Muslim majority countries are so wonderful, how come so many Muslims want to come to the UK? It won't be the weather. Maybe it is because we have an open, tolerant society.

Their summers are brutal. The summers here and milder in comparison

I was the kid who travelled around with my parents work, and I now live in the U.K. and love it, every single day! I don’t earn loads, or my husband, but I love the freedom, seasons, diversity, and culture. My mum (my father died a few years ago) reads the memes and thinks I live in a hellhole (funny as we’re in a village with countryside all around, harvest festivals and country fairs!); she still hasn’t visited in over 15 years but my life now is bliss and my childhood whilst safe was lacking in so many ways. My children will grow up here, and I’m so happy about that, and the stability they have, and a community around them I never had.

Be fair. You live in SNP lala land.

Holyrood is shit. Westminster is shit. Different shades of the same old shit 🤷‍♀️

Worth saying that I am in favour of home rule. And that I voted SNP until Sturgeon. I have a vested interest in our health service, and I appreciate the SNP's good (but too often poorly executed) intention vis a vis health service staff. Besides for that, they're shit 😂

We have democracy but what do we get for it. Nothing.. I'd happily not be allowed to vote if the rulers actually did a good job
