Moving abroad has made me realise how bloody dire the UK is

We moved abroad 4 months ago and after the normal wobbles and adjustments I am now shocked at how different (and much better!) life is. We have considerably more spending money despite paying for private school and healthcare (which are much much better than the UK). It’s safer, considerably cleaner, better public services and much better food quality.

already I can’t see us ever going back and already want to explore somewhere new eventually! But if anyone is feeling low and despondent about the uk which we really were and gets an opportunity (or has a transferable job) I would 100000% recommend looking into it.

i wish we had done it 10 years ago tbh. AIBU to never come back bar the odd visit to see family and friends?!

Your honesty is refreshing, normally British people don't like it when people criticise the country. Just try and say the food is garbage and you'll get hundreds of angry little Englanders frothing at the mouth to tell you that Yorkshire puddings are actually the food of the gods.

Sorry but nothing Britain makes will ever compare to something like a good chicken Tikka Masala, for example.

Does anyone like having their home criticised?

If Muslim majority countries are so wonderful, how come so many Muslims want to come to the UK? It won't be the weather. Maybe it is because we have an open, tolerant society.

Not every Muslim majority country is the same, I’m sure you can recognise that.

How are people who don’t have well paid jobs doing there? I would judge any country on how the poorest and most vulnerable live.

Would you? Then the UK looks really grim...

Blogswife · Today 22:17

I’ll keep shitty UK thanks ! I’m not sure I’d like to live where homosexuality is illegal, women are second place and people are hung to death

How dare you, chicken tikka IS British!

I can't be bothered to reply to the Islamists.

Who hurries back to use the NHS? The NHS isn't known for speed of delivery medication. Usually delays means things get worse even cancers

This just isn’t true.

In my experience, it is, unfortunately, very true.

NormasArse · Today 22:25

The NHS has saved the lives of several members of my family, and given me two new hips to hike on. It’s not perfect, but it could be as near as dammit, if people realised what we have here, and fought for it.

Like hell it is, its bloomin Indian you crazy person. I can't believe we are at the point where we have Brits trying to claim other nation's food as their own 🤣

That poster posts a mishmash of views, plays devil advocate and doesn’t really ever say what she’s thinking. It is mostly attention-seeking stuff I think on threads, esp when talking about other cultures and immigrants. Best ignored I find!

We’ve moved to the Oman which I know mumsnet hates the ME but so far it’s been great. Husbands insurance is covered, ours was £3000 for myself and 3 kids for very good coverage. No I will take Arabic lessons and kids learn it in school but everyone speaks English!

Gosh !!

Cardhey · Today 22:33

England is becoming a cesspit where you can be British in your own country, something which every other country laughs at, where we are bankrupting ourselves as a nation. Laughing stock of Europe.

When reading posts like this, you always need to wonder about the motive behind the post.
I know that when someone is posted abroad to work, there are all kind of financial benefits, like private schooling etcetera.
That doesn't make the county a better place. It means the person has traded in living in their own country for more money.
I don't think too many people will be envious. But each to his own. Let's hope Op never needs to come home.

Why shouldn’t she come home, if she wants? Do you think her place here depends on her financial contribution?

The women of Piddington have more to fear from their brothers and husbands than the refugees taking sanctuary nearby. No need to spread any more xenophobic fear to the ignorant masses, if the government thought these people were legitimately dangerous they wouldn't let them in the country.

I'm pretty sure that's not true in the majority of cases....

I’m sorry but I don’t recognise you. I’m also sorry if I’ve confused you with another poster. As for being rude. I can live with that. Especially when I’m separating fact from fiction.

It’s very unfortunate you couldn’t have pointed out my error without being as rude as you were. Pot. Kettle. Black.

You can keep your apologies.
You are obviously happy in Oman, as you say you've lived their for 50 yrs. I was merely pointing out how dismissive you were of the other posters experience of living there.
I couldn't be happy in a country where there is no real democracy, women are not equal to men and homosexuality is illegal.
The UK may be many things but none of the above apply here.

So does health insurance cover everything or are there pre-existing conditions etc? Just wondered because you pay c. 800 pa for the NHS per adult working (i.e. via tax).

Oman and Israel were getting along with low level representation and a visit from the Israeli Prime minister until just a few years ago but then the second Intifada happened and those ties were cut.

Jewish people in Oman - of course there are. Not in great numbers but they do have a presence.

Gay people in Oman? There are.

Anyway in the interest of fairness I’ve just googled The Torahs stance on homosexuality and it makes very interesting reading. Perhaps you need to put your own house in order before pointing the finger at others.

The Torah says what it says, but in Israel homosexuality is legal and not a criminal offence as it is in Oman. Which is the point, I think.

I meant that it will be a come down to come home after slagging Britain off so energetically. In fact she will probably have to come home, because she will need to leave once the job terminates.

Amnesty International reports that migrant workers in Oman (so not OP) face 'systemic vulnerabilities, including unpaid wages, excessive working hours, passport confiscation, and physical mistreatment.'

That seems to be just the start of it. Personally I would not feel comfortable in a country with multiple human rights abuses.

CrazyMidget · Today 22:46

Well, I'm glad you're happy, OP, but I wouldn't want to live permanently in a non-Western country that isn't free or democratic.

The reason Western developed countries are expensive to live in is because they are democracies and people have freedom - unlike in many countries around the world. So everyone wants to live in them.

Freedom isn't free.

I'd leave the UK in a heartbeat. To somewhere in Europe though, Denmark or Switzerland. Even Norway. The UK is a shithole, and I live in a picturesque coastal town in Scotland aswell! Goodness knows how people in more densely populated areas of this hellscape manage, fair fucks to all who do 🫡

Be fair. You live in SNP lala land.
