Moving abroad has made me realise how bloody dire the UK is

We moved abroad 4 months ago and after the normal wobbles and adjustments I am now shocked at how different (and much better!) life is. We have considerably more spending money despite paying for private school and healthcare (which are much much better than the UK). It’s safer, considerably cleaner, better public services and much better food quality.

already I can’t see us ever going back and already want to explore somewhere new eventually! But if anyone is feeling low and despondent about the uk which we really were and gets an opportunity (or has a transferable job) I would 100000% recommend looking into it.

i wish we had done it 10 years ago tbh. AIBU to never come back bar the odd visit to see family and friends?!

Oman! I do hope that you don’t experience domestic violence and your children aren’t gay….. Given you clearly have such little regards for others’ human rights propping up a system like that, clearly you wouldn’t care about anyone else detriment apart from
your own.

Jealous!

This x 💯.
I hate the smugness and the sneering.

Me too @issyforqueen Are we meant to be jealous? You couldn't pay me to live where the OP lives!

We need to look at countries like Oman and see what we can learn from them, instead of just dismissing them because they are in the Middle-East.

Great point Oona. I spent 15 years in the ME, its fantastic.
My DW and I, both retired, early 60's, well over a £million in pension and property assets, left the UK last year.
I want to be proud of my birthplace, but I'm not. So my tax dollar, has gone elsewhere.

True. But, criminals roam the streets here, unchecked. Hardly ideal, is it?

Not everywhere. They don't where I live or where I lived before moving here. and neither are anywhere you would call very upmarket, just ordinary. Lots of places in England don't have high crime rates with criminals roaming the streets.

Haha, ok. You win the prize for the nicest part of the UK. Well done.

What? Why the sarcasm. No need.

iamnotalemon · Today 19:14

Ved · Today 19:07

Yeah, probably. Definitely projecting, but I am not apologising for living in a lovely middle class rural area, or saying the UK is shit and where I live is shit to make someone else feel better.

You don’t need to apologise for living in a lovely area but you lost me at Middle Class and rural. If you need to call me Working Class just because I think parts of the UK need a good scrub, that’s fine. But it says more about you.

We’ve moved to the Oman which I know mumsnet hates the ME but so far it’s been great. Husbands insurance is covered, ours was £3000 for myself and 3 kids for very good coverage. No I will take Arabic lessons and kids learn it in school but everyone speaks English!

FFS Oman.

@ilovemylogburner Except the actual statistics tell a rather different story. Violent crime in England and Wales has fallen by around 75–80% since its peak in the mid-1990s. We are substantially less likely to experience violence than we were 30 years ago. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2026

Yes, we would have, say, less theft if the sanction for theft was chopping off a hand. Maybe none. Sure. But I would rather not live in such a society.

Crime in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics

Crime against households and people aged 16 years and over, using data from police recorded crime and the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW).

Exactly! A handful of posters on here have some pretty weird ideas of the UK. I don't recognise any of what they are saying. My area is lovely with almost no crime.

I’ve not dismissed simply because they’re in the ME.
I dismiss them due to the fact that women and the LGBT community don’t have equal rights.
That is a huge issue for me.

Don’t be so utterly ridiculous. Do you only spend time where you live? Or do you visit other parts of the UK? Because I do and that is where these awful things happened. Twice. With precisely zero response from the Police. So the “rule of law” in the Uk is tenuous, at best.

DebbieSavage · Today 19:16

Ved · Today 19:11

Good grief. What is your problem? Confused

Try not to engage with that poster, some people really have a bee in their bonnet about middle class folks and want to try and insinuate we are privileged to get where we are. Maybe if some people studied harder in school and aspired to be better than their parents they could have achieved something too.

For the record, where you live sounds lovely.

Stinkybooks · Today 19:16

And you felt the need to post here and attempt to rub our noses in it because…..?

Yabu
What is it like for gay people there?
Anyone who is different?
are you allowed to wear what you want to? Will that always be the case?
is freedom of speech allowed?
Freedom of religion?
What is life like for single parents there? Unmarried mothers?
Do they look after their poor/homeless/unemployed
How is your access to healthcare?
So many other questions…..

So many reasons why I’d rather stay here thanks. The fact that I’m British being one of them. It really isn’t awful here. That’s an opinion and imo a false perception.

I never mentioned you being working class. Another poster mentioned you may live in a working class area, as you seem to find it hard to believe someone in the UK lives in a nice area, but no-one has called you working class.. I don't even know you, so why would I say this anyway? Also, what is wrong with being working class?

You are definitely projecting though, and are being rude and insinuated I am a liar when I said I live in a nice area.. I don't know why you are being like this. I am not engaging with you any longer though.

This attitude and bitterness is what we left behind. Everyone here has been so welcoming, it feels a positive environment for kids with hope for the future. In the UK everyone was desperate to drag you down if you want better

Unbelievable ignorance.

But to play devils advocate, I don’t recognise any of what people say about the UAE on a day to day basis. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. The same as you can’t be so naïve or ignorant that all of the UK is not wonderful and ‘naice’.
