To be offended that a man I'm dating inspected my flat and criticised my belongings? Or am I a 'secret hoarder'?

I recently started dating a guy who initially seemed so promising, affectionate and ambitious (... if a little pedantic and reserved).

The first few dates went amazingly well. Lovely walk and a drink, then a dinner date, then on the third date, he invited me back to his place. He owns a very minimal, yet beautifully designed 3-bedroom house and garden. Impressive, yet spotless - every single item on display appears catalogue curated. I do remember being anxious at the time, as I wondered whether my quirky little rental apartment would size up. And I felt out of place and clumsy in this 'perfect' home.

For context, I live alone and adore my own apartment. It's a 1-bed Victorian rental conversion (not quite a privately owned 3-bed, but hey!) and it became a sanctum of my inner world after a very traumatic break up years ago. It's the first place I've ever lived alone and felt my own. I have all of my lovely vintage furniture in there, all my books and journals (I'm finishing a PhD), prints on the wall and loads of sentimental trinkets and objects from travels dotted around.
I also love doing art work in my free time, so my dining table is often loaded up with art materials and projects I'm working on.
Definitely tons of stuff that I need to donate/recycle - but the space is kept clean and is not piled up. I would call it 'busy'.

When I did invite him around, I sensed instantly that he was sizing it up. I guess it's not uncommon to be curious and have a nosy around when you first enter someone's place (I do the same), but there was something that felt off.

He flat out said, after 'inspecting' my apartment - "I didn't know you were a secret hoarder". I was really offended, but decided to brush it off. (Before cooking him a meal, yes, silly me...)

The second time that he arranged to came round, I ended up manically cleaning, tidying and decluttering before he arrived, because I was so on edge about him making another comment.
He saw the boxes laid out to go to the charity shop the next day and immediately commented "you see what I mean!"
He then proceeded to dry dust my TV and laptop unasked for the next 20 minutes, alongside making snide comments about my reading taste ("I can tell you're a feminist sighs".

When I've been around to his place since, I feel like I'm walking on eggshells. He already claims that I've scuffed the wall in two places, but can't confirm where..?

Obviously, I know these are red flags. I'm close to sacking things off with him, but it has made me paranoid that maybe, in fact, I am a slovenly person with hoarding tendencies??? I've always had a 'one in, on out' system for buying new items, but I do love surrounding myself with memories and interests. I guess this is just incompatible with some people. I do get that we have our own ways of living.

I worry because my parents are LEGIT hoarders i.e. there is one path that leads its way through the house because they have stacks upon stacks of miscellaneous items that they can't let go of at all - as in, it's emotionally unbearable for them to do so. And no one knows where the valuable/sentimental items are within the 'shite'. At one point, they were worried a rat had escaped into the mess... I know that I'll have to be helping out with some of that soon, so to be referred to as a 'secret hoarder' myself is a real blow.

Do I need to reassess my own living space and background, or can I just conclude that this recent dating partner is at best incompatible, at worst officious?

OMG this made me spurt my tea out 😂he actually is a Virgo. Neither he nor I pay real credence to horoscopes, but that's such a funny coincidence you say that!
Now guess mine 😂

Cancer is my first guess.

Capricorn is my backup guess.

Bin the man. Even if he wasn't staggeringly rude, you could never live together in harmony with such opposite styles.

Redflagsabounded · 15/10/2026 15:31

Hoarding is very different to having lots of stuff. Hoarders keep utter shite, and the amount of stuff impacts their ability to use their home and live normally.

He's a minimalist, that's fine. You're a maximalist, also fine. But completely incompatible. He's also rude, sneery and believes in sexism. Get rid.

Shatenoeuf · 15/10/2026 15:32

Op, if you take a photo of your living room, where is it on the clutter image rating scale? Ive got a couple of hoarders in my life, both would solidly deny having a problem and both would be a 4/5. Both have a really low threshhold for keeping stuff. "I cant throw that, auntie Sue gave it to me for christmas in 1995" (item is a bit broken and hasnt moved from the shelf in decades).

He's a fucking arsehole.

There is only one piece of decluttering you need to do.

My first serious boyfriend went to my sisters with me. Their house was a long term renovation project, so not a show home. He ran his fingers along the top of the doorframe and showed me the dust (mainly sawdust) and smirked. My sister saw and gave him the death stare. As we walked out she said to me "get rid". Advice id follow if I were you op.

localnotail · 15/10/2026 15:34

If anyone criticise my cosy cluttered flat to the same expend your BF criticized yours they will never darken my door again. He sounds mad, like "Sleeping with the Enemy" mad.

And he has an issue with feminism. Bin him.

Thegirlwhowent · 15/10/2026 15:35

You are obviously incompatible. He sounds far too precious about his place and your place sounds busy in a lovely way. However, when you mentioned that you'd got boxes of stuff laid out for the charity shop - and that was after just one sort-out - I did wonder if you perhaps need to reassess how much stuff you've got and whether it's maybe taking over a bit?

JHound · 15/10/2026 15:35

“("I can tell you're a feminist sighs")

I would have ended it there ^^

Flamingojune · 15/10/2026 15:36

Does he expect 'tidiness' in other areas of your relationship

blackcatlove · 15/10/2026 15:36

He sounds an absolute dickhead. It does sound like you hoard stuff though, hanging onto stuff you’ve been given when a child is definitely hoarding territory. You’ve probably become a bit blind to how much stuff you have.

Cancer.. your flat sounds like a home, not a sterial like a serial killer... you know its only like that so they can clean up the crime scene easier dont you....

ChaToilLeam · 15/10/2026 15:37

He sounds rude and uptight. Declutter him!

TheBlueRobin · 15/10/2026 15:41

Bin anything you don't want or need anymore. Everyone feels better after a clear out. And I say that as a fellow quirky collector of things.

But FIRST, BIN HIM.

What do you mean by sporting stuff op? What sort of things do you mean and why are you keeping it?

Yes this. This really does smack of hoarding. Who keeps childhood sporting equipment? Why?

Aquarius? A Water sign, anyway.

Huckleberries · 15/10/2026 15:45

definitely ditch this one

I envy how he keeps his house but what he did in your home is completely unacceptable.

And the feminist comment ..ugh.

onmylastnerveseriously · 15/10/2026 15:45

My gosh he sounds so boring and threatened by your intelligence and range of interests, how can you bear him?

I was thinking of Air signs. Got mixed up bc Aquarius sounds like water. Anyway, I wonder if OP is an Air sign.

Oh god just tell him to P / off now
Don't let anyone make you feel that way about yourself or your home.
Get rid asap.

CrazyMidget · 15/10/2026 15:50

OP, he sounds like a complete twat, and a negative one at that. Plus some worrying controlling tendencies and his misogyny escaping early in your relationship. (The feminist comment.) He's lucky that a normal person like you even looked at him! You can do so much better. And I include being happily single in that. But you know this.

He's been so rude to you that I'd dump him by text. Also, he sounds like such a weirdo that I wouldn't be doing it in person.

Overwhelmedandtired · 15/10/2026 15:50

Definitely not the guy for you. He sounds incredibly stuffy and anal. It doesn't seem like you (or likely anyone else) would feel comfortable in the show room he calls his home. I doubt he will find anyone else that would live up to his standards, and he certainly would never cope with kids (if that was an interest of yours)

Your home sounds comfortable, lived in, and completely normal.

It is tricky when you have hoarders as parents to feel like you are like them when you just have a few things to be put away. But you definitely don't sound like that, it sounds like a lovely homely haven that you need to protect for yourself, by not inviting his like in anymore!

CrazyMidget · 15/10/2026 15:51

And FWIW, I think your home sounds just lovely. 🥹 And you're happy, which is the main thing.
