To believe the team “Karen” isn’t misogynistic

To start with… I don’t like the term. It can’t be pleasant if you are actually called Karen. And I don’t believe I’ve ever used it….

But I don’t see why it is misogynistic…. Unless someone says that all women are Karens. Some women are just insufferable, the same way some men are. Admitting this doesn’t make you misogynistic! And more than calling someone a Dick makes that person a misandrist.

Bandying the word “misogyny” around whenever anyone says anything that’s not completely complimentary about a woman just devalues the word, and makes it more difficult to call out real misogyny.

Well if they didn’t act like a Karen they wouldn’t need shutting down in the first place would they🤷‍♀️

Well if they didn’t act like a Karen dare open their mouths and - the shock! the horror! - advocate for themselves they wouldn’t need shutting down in the first place would they🤷‍♀️

There, fixed that for you.

Can't stand it. The thing I REALLY hate is that no one can complain about being called a Karen without then 'being' a Karen.

Completely there to shut down older women.

I agree.

But also, not ‘just’ older women. It’s become so lazy, it’s any women really, daring to counter a particular narrative.

I'm most familiar with Ken - He’s Karen’s equivalent partner in quasi-distress and his name is Ken.

Never ever heard, or saw, this in all the places I see ‘Karen’ used eg insta comments

momager22 · 13/10/2026 21:51

I haven’t seen it used to specifically shut down older women who are standing up for themselves.
I’ve seen it used to describe women who are acting in a superior, unreasonable and agressive manner to people they deem ‘lower than’ I.e retail workers or serving staff.
like the old clips of the women shrieking to easyJet staff because she’s gone to the wrong airport and they can’t magically whip up a flight for her - she would be called a Karen these days. Regardless of age.

You need to look more widely then, especially in social media commentary.

But regardless, even in the scenario you describe of an unpleasant woman complaining needlessly and rudely - why is she a ‘Karen’? Why not simply address the behaviour, instead of misappropriating, senselessly, another woman’s name? What point does that make?

Greenmouldycheese · 13/10/2026 23:51

Waitingfordoggo · 13/10/2026 23:36

Why not just call women dicks/dickheads then @Greenmouldycheese ? Those are terms I would use if I wanted to say that a woman was behaving badly. Or twat, arse, bellend, wanker… Even cunt if they’re particularly heinous. I’d use those words for men, women and dogs. (I mean only if warranted; I’m not throwing them around willy-nilly).

Do you ever use the word ‘Karen’ for men? If not, why not? Why do women get a special word that can’t be used for men? The insults used for men can be used for women.

Ive called them lots of different names, including cunt and dick. Karen is just another word and it doesnt really seem right calling a man Karen, Susan or whatever. People who get offended by it just have way to much time on their hands and looking for something to gripe about. None of it is that deep.

But ‘Karen’ is not ‘just another word’? It’s a woman’s name. Usually a woman of a certain age.

How is it equivalent to another insulting term like ‘bitch’ or ‘prick’? Not that I’m keen on simply using insulting names to provide a counter-argument, regardless.

I’m amazed you are unable to see the difference.

Dick is a man's name and men also get called cunts. None of them are pleasant or endearing. I dont see how Karen is any different? I feel bad for women who are actually called Karen because their name is now used as an insult but thats it.

I dont have a strong feeling about it but Ive only really heard it used by young women

It's used to shut women down specifically older women, specifically women who dare to defend or stand up for themselves. It buys into the women should be good girls demure and quiet, subservient and unassuming. Any one who uses it is misogynistic

No, there are women who are insufferable, come on.

ThatCosy · Yesterday 00:58

It's an absolutely awful term. There isn't a male equivalent: dck is used as cnt is (and c*nt is regarded as far worse of course). It stops older women being able to speak up on anything at all and enforces the status wuo that they are worthless snd invisible. If the focus is those that stick up for community rights and responsibilities, then imagine a society where those were never enforced.

Don't support anything that causes women to be scared to speak up.

It's pretty popular insult from teen boys around here. And of course it's misogynistic - if a man tells them to stop misbehaving (i.e riding scooters on pavements in such a way to endanger pedestrians), they tend to scatter. If a woman does the same it's "fuck off Karen".

Im not fixated on Karen. Happy to evolve to more sophisticated insults if you have some good ones I could adopt?

Or maybe you don’t need to insult people- you just do you.

Twiglets1 · Yesterday 05:05

It’s misogynist, unimaginative and stupid.

Normally used by men/boys who can’t cope with women who stand up for themselves.

It’s a negative term aimed at older white women.

Dick is a cock as well as a man’s name and when people call someone a dick ( no capital letter needed) they are suggesting they are a bit of a cock.

And when people call a woman a Karen, its because shes being a Karen. 😆

Nothing funny about using ageist sexist stereotypes to put a women down.

Oh I forgot racist (it’s early).

Longtermmuser · Yesterday 06:18

I just assume anyone using that term is a bit thick with a limited vocabulary. People resort to name calling when they feel threatened but don't have the intelligence to form an actual opinion.

This, personally I believe most women who get called “karen” are the only thing standing between us and civilisational collapse.

We don’t have a similar name for men, weird that….

I have a theory that it’s to do with male latent anger at their mothers “you don’t tell me what to do” and young women who are being total “pick me’s”. If somethings wrong you should be able to bloody well say so.

Missey85 · Yesterday 06:33

I agree with you too but most people on here won't 🙂

likelysuspect · Yesterday 06:36

It came from America though and like many things from America it doesnt fit with our norms and issues.

There's probably no difference between the countries. But I know that you know that if it's used in anger it's very aggressive.
