To think free flu jabs for NHS admin staff is ridiculous??

My SIL is admin staff in the NHS, she has no patient contact and no real contact with medical staff, beyond half an hour a week.

She’s just got a free flu jab! AIBU to think this is disgusting? It must cost the NHS so much, admin staff should have to pay. I agree that frontline staff should get it for free to protect the vulnerable but admin staff shouldn’t.

Net beneficiaries, not contributors.

Imagine thinking this about your own family.

Which is why I agree they need them. Just not at a cost to the taxpayer!

Do you realise the taxpayer would be paying their sick pay while they lie in bed with flu, and if the department is lucky enough to get cover, the taxpayer would be paying for that too.

It’s simply not a priority. Admin staff should have to get it, but they should pay out of their pockets. It’s only £15! They shouldn’t be getting it for free.

So when half the admin dept is off with flu who is going to book your consultant slot, your operation slot, sort out your elderly relative’s transport and that’s just the staff dealing with clinics.

Who do you think runs the nuts and bolts to allow the actual medical stuff to happen?
Offering a free jab for all staff is a great idea and could make a huge amount of difference to the stress admin staff deal with over the winter when they have to carry so many colleagues off sick with flu.

during the pandemic they got free testing to check if they’d had it and free jabs as soon as it came out.

justteanbiscuits · 13/10/2026 17:37

It costs the NHS about £8 per vaccine given to their staff

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/10/2026 17:37

You’d hate me @thisisjustridiculous

On the day our Health Board’s vaccination team visited our hospital site, I made sure that everyone I came in contact with knew where they were able to get their flu jabs (you’ll be pleased to know we can’t get Covid vaccines any more). Drs, nurses, therapists, HCSW, estates, housekeepers, caterers- they all went. I’m interested to know which team members you think we can cope without when they’re off sick?

TheSmallAssassin · 13/10/2026 17:38

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:29

Because it’s taxpayer money. Think how much it just cost!

Vaccinating admin staff saves the NHS money. It's just good business sense!

HobnobsChoice · 13/10/2026 17:38

How about you get a job in the NHS and then you can get a free flu jab? Or if you meet one of the medical criteria you can have it for free.

My kids also got a flu vaccination. The free loaders, they haven't even got a job at all and get the jab.

48 hours ago I'd have written this person off as a bot.
Turns out such people can be real

My husbands company gives it free to absolutely everyone and they all work in offices

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:11

That’s why they should have to pay for it.

I’ve always had it paid for by my employer. Low cost way to try and limit the number of employees getting ill and off work.

Sunflowersandmulberries · 13/10/2026 17:40

It's a pretty low cost benefit to gove your staff. If you're outraged by this DO NOT Google NHS pensions!

mindutopia · 13/10/2026 17:41

That makes perfect sense for me. I have cancer. I have a lot of hospital appointments and contact. Admin staff are as essential as my oncologist and they probably do more for me in terms of my day to day care.

Are you aware that many low paid NHS staff actually need to use food banks?
during lockdown they had one set up where my relative works and it ran for some time after due to need.

where are you getting the £15 figure from? Anyway even if it is £15 I’d rather they had it and departments kept running through the winter.

herewegoagainonwednesday · 13/10/2026 17:42

Pretty much every big company pays for free flu jabs for employees. Pretty stupid not to, the cost of even a fraction of people off sick is much higher than the flu jabs.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/10/2026 17:42

Just booked my free flu jab, thanks for reminding me. Might even see if they offer me the free COVID jab.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 13/10/2026 17:42

As an employer, I choose to offer staff free flu jabs if they want them. It's just good business sense.

You seem to be agreeing that the NHS admin staff should have the jabs but you want the admin to fund it themselves? That makes no sense.

And yes, it is taxpayer's money. And money well spent imo. I'd rather pay for people to get flu jabs than for them to be off sick!

5foot5 · 13/10/2026 17:42

DD doesn't work for NHS but her employer gave her a voucher for a free flu jab. A few years ago my employer ( not NHS) did the same. It makes good sense since the few quid a vaccine costs will be more than repaid by the cost of having to cover somebody off sick.

BTW somebody up thread said it would be £15. Bargain! I had mine done privately today and it was £25

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:31

That’s different, teachers are essential.

Jumped the shark now op.

HRTQueen · 13/10/2026 17:43

Are you still fuming over the free lunches NHS staff received during covid too

and admin staff are an essential part of the NHS

BitOutOfPractice · 13/10/2026 17:45

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:21

I was awaiting the word “taxpayer” with bated breath. I knew it was coming.

I expect you call your front drive your “property” as well.

You know NHS admin staff are taxpayers I assume?

Wait till you find out that my DP, who works for the local council got it too. Outrageous eh?

willowstar · 13/10/2026 17:45

I can only imagine that this poster is rage baiting us all. Or is just really, really fucking stupid

(from an NHS nurse who utterly relies on our admin team to sort out appointments and get our patients in front of us, deal with test results, patient and family queries etc...)

walrushurricane · 13/10/2026 17:46

A lot of employers pay for their staff to have flu jabs. If they think it cost effective then it certainly will be for the nhs as they get the jabs for a lot less.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/10/2026 17:46

I’m going to complain to my MP about your work shy, tax dodging DC. It’s disgusting. Disgusting I tell ya!

GCAcademic · 13/10/2026 17:48

I work in a department where the entire admin team has come down with flu over the past fortnight. It’s cost us thousands of pounds and will take us weeks to get our operations back on track. It absolutely does affect front-line service. Spending £100 to prevent that is a no-brainer.

i don’t know why I bothered posting that, though, as the OP is clearly on a wind up.
