To think free flu jabs for NHS admin staff is ridiculous??

My SIL is admin staff in the NHS, she has no patient contact and no real contact with medical staff, beyond half an hour a week.

She’s just got a free flu jab! AIBU to think this is disgusting? It must cost the NHS so much, admin staff should have to pay. I agree that frontline staff should get it for free to protect the vulnerable but admin staff shouldn’t.

So you know how much it costs to have people off sick?
I think more employers should offer it for free.

That’s why they should have to pay for it.

The NHS would struggle with admin staff going off sick with flu.

Obviously

LaurieFairyCake · 13/10/2026 17:12

Yes they should, we literally can’t afford for staff to be off or coming in spreading flu. Almost every area is already understaffed.

it WILL and DOES have a knock on affect, on contacting patients, on running departments

you could not be more wrong

WhatNoRaisins · 13/10/2026 17:12

It's all to do with minimising sick leave.

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:13

It’s simply not a priority. Admin staff should have to get it, but they should pay out of their pockets. It’s only £15! They shouldn’t be getting it for free.

It will cost the NHS far less than £15 for its own staff.

flumpkeu · 13/10/2026 17:14

It’s quite common for public sector to fund flu jabs, every civil service department I’ve worked in has, helps keep staff sickness down.

FabulouslyFab · 13/10/2026 17:15

Goodness me, did you get out the wrong side of the bed today!!

LadyLooo · 13/10/2026 17:15

I work for my local council and we all get free flu and Covid jabs 🤷‍♂️

Saves a lot of money on sick pay.

You can’t force people to pay for it , dont be ridiculous .

TheGentleHelper · 13/10/2026 17:15

The only time I have ever had flu was after getting the jab for it.

randomchap · 13/10/2026 17:15

This is a new way of attacking the NHS, well done on your originality.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 13/10/2026 17:15

Our team would not function without our amazing admin team.

Why would you not want your family member to have a flu jab?

Barleycat · 13/10/2026 17:16

YABVU. Who do you think will pick up the work of admin staff if they are off sick with flu? Who will answer phones, book appts, respond to complaints, let visitors onto wards, type letters, send out appts etc etc. And as for not being pt facing, some are some aren't but they are all likely to come into contact with staff who are. All NHS staff are entitled to a flu jab, just wish more of them would take it, its a collective responsibility to protect the sick and vulnerable.

Agree completely! In fact at £15 what a bargain for employers to keep a staff member in work for potentially multiple days!

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/10/2026 17:16

Jealous, she is offered it for free why not.

What do you mean admin staff should 'have to get it' but they should pay?

They can't force people to have vaccinations and they certainly can't force them to pay out of their own pockets.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 13/10/2026 17:17

They absolutely should get it. Flu spreads.

Freshrain · 13/10/2026 17:17

YABVVVVU.

NotTooOldPaul · 13/10/2026 17:18

I know a few companies that pay for their staff to have the flu jag as it is cheaper then having them off sick

catdistributionsystem · 13/10/2026 17:18

You’d probably be the first to whinge when there’s nobody to answer the phones because they’ve all got flu!

I'm going to hazard a guess that the op also has beef with their SIL. Probably envious about something else and their free flu jab is just an excuse to be annoyed.

Pinkflamingo10 · 13/10/2026 17:19

This post can’t be for real ?!!
all NHS staff are entitled to a flipping flu jab, they spend their winter working hard in the viral soup that is an NHS hospital. I worked for the nhs for 19 years, everywhere was already stretched and short staffed without anyone going off with flu.

P00hsticks · 13/10/2026 17:19

I'm retired now but the private sector company I worked for offered all its staff coupons for free flu jabs every year - they'd obviously done the sums and realised it was cheaper than having people go sick.
