To think free flu jabs for NHS admin staff is ridiculous??

My SIL is admin staff in the NHS, she has no patient contact and no real contact with medical staff, beyond half an hour a week.

She’s just got a free flu jab! AIBU to think this is disgusting? It must cost the NHS so much, admin staff should have to pay. I agree that frontline staff should get it for free to protect the vulnerable but admin staff shouldn’t.

Oh dear. Lots of employers give free flu jabs as a "benefit". It's nothing to do with offering staff a freebie and everything to do with reducing sickness absence.

CherryKerry · 13/10/2026 17:27

Do you not get any staff "perks" at your work OP 😆?

HettyTagliatelli · 13/10/2026 17:27

It’s simply not a priority. Admin staff should have to get it, but they should pay out of their pockets. It’s only £15! They shouldn’t be getting it for free.

This makes no sense. If you believe they need it then why do you think it shouldn’t be provided by the employer like everything else that is needed to do a job effectively?

"I pay your wages!" blah, blah, blah.

Wait till op hears that many schools give teachers subsidised flu jabs. The outrage

Babayagahaha · 13/10/2026 17:28

I think it would be prudent to give it to all teachers and police staff too. Would pay itself back.

Can you say why you think this. The majority of admin staff are on much lower salaries than medical staff. I would wager you have no idea what admin staff actually do and if they were off in droves things like appointments, clinic letters, and all the other “unworthy stuff” would grind to a halt. Would be OK for admissions through A&E for example but planned admissions etc would be severely impacted.

I am interested to hear your response to this - and yes I am admin staff and was right there as soon as the clinics for staff were available.

Ohdearwhatsthisthen · 13/10/2026 17:29

Dh works in local government partly from home and he gets a free flu jab. Hate to break it to you op but your taxes seem to be paying for quite a lot of other people's flu jabs!

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:21

Which is why I agree they need them. Just not at a cost to the taxpayer!

Erm they are a taxpayer.

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:29

Spacecowboys · 13/10/2026 17:21

How do you suppose clinical staff will do their jobs properly if their admin staff are off sick with flu.
And why on earth do you begrudge staff earning 25-30 k per year a free £15 flu jab.

Because it’s taxpayer money. Think how much it just cost!

Yabu.
If the admin teams go down with flu will the consultants and nurses be doing the appointment admin? I hope everyone in the NHS, admin, cleaners, porters, lab staff and caterers all get a free flu jab.

Why stop there then? Make them pay for the paper and electricity they use too.

FFSItsTooHot · 13/10/2026 17:30

I personally think EVERYONE should be entitled to a free flu jab. What has really annoyed me over the last couple of years is that my DD's GP's surgery has sent her a text saying that she can now book her free flu jab, then when she's tried to book it,they start arguing over her eligibility for it!

Loub1987 · 13/10/2026 17:30

I’m not following, why do you care?

Quite a lot of organisations do provide the free to employees to avoid sick leave and spreading to other colleagues.

That’s different, teachers are essential.

Yes, because the NHS admins don't contribute to society

At least your username is correct, everything you say is ridiculous

This is honestly my most hated phrase on mumsnet

The answer is that it'll cost substantially less than all the sick days that would otherwise be lost to flu. I guarantee you there's been a full cost/benefit analysis and giving the flu jab to all staff saves the NHS money, which is why it's being offered.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 13/10/2026 17:31

Members of my family get flu jabs (or vouchers) from their employers - teachers, civil servants and council employees.
I work for NHS and have been offered flu vaccine and up till recently COVID and although in theory a frontline HCP I don't have any contact with patients unlike the receptionists and some other admin staff

So fucking what?

Shit-stirring thread. And embarrassingly poorly thought-out.

There it is. The NHS have too many administrators. I’m sure someone will be along to agree with you.
