To think free flu jabs for NHS admin staff is ridiculous??

My SIL is admin staff in the NHS, she has no patient contact and no real contact with medical staff, beyond half an hour a week.

She’s just got a free flu jab! AIBU to think this is disgusting? It must cost the NHS so much, admin staff should have to pay. I agree that frontline staff should get it for free to protect the vulnerable but admin staff shouldn’t.

Honestly OP you’re being an absolute bell end. Of all the things to moan about, giving nhs staff a flu jab really isn’t up there for most people.

TY78910 · 13/10/2026 19:45

Are you ok? NHS is an employer like any other company. I work in the private sector and one of my benefits is a free flu jab. NHS employees can have benefits / perks just like any other human being with a job 😂😂😂

Her taxes are paying for it.

She would be paying for them to be off sick for a week or two if they got flu which would be a lot more than a cost price flu jab.

Lots of employers do this, it saves them and the wider economy a lot of money.

KiwiFall · 13/10/2026 19:46

You do realise that admin and other non clinical staff come into contact multiple times every single day with people who are clinical that do have contact with patients. Hospitals offer it to minimise staff absences from the flu. Hospitals at the moment don’t have a lot of money and they can’t afford to pay for bank staff should staff be off ill. It is actually a good investment in the long run.

I haven’t said NHS admin staff shouldn’t get them. Just saying that that poster does get to have an opinion about it, as do we all.

Which is why I agree they need them. Just not at a cost to the taxpayer!

So you mean they should be forced to have them and pay for them?

IcyTaupeOrca · 13/10/2026 19:49

lol were cooked without admin. I don’t know how to rebook a patient because our training didn’t cover that and there’s part of the software I don’t have access to because I have a clinician login not admin.

Anyway uptake of flu jabs in nhs staff is around 35% compared to nearly 75% of over 65.

Focussingonme · 13/10/2026 19:50

Wow, just wow. The lack of critical thinking skills you are demonstrating here is staggering.

Minasama · 13/10/2026 19:51

It’s common sense. Many employers offer a free flu jab so they don’t lose their staff to illness.

NormasArse · 13/10/2026 19:54

TheGentleHelper · 13/10/2026 17:15

The only time I have ever had flu was after getting the jab for it.

I was ill for almost two weeks- like really ill. Never had one since, and that was around 35 years ago.

My surgery keeps offering me a free jab- I wonder why.

Footloosenotfancy · 13/10/2026 19:56

Wow, what a spiteful post OP, have you nothing better to moan about?
I've had free flu jabs working for private companies, as has DH. It costs far more to have flu run rampant through your workforce. You know, preventative medicine and all that. The next thing you'll be whining about NHS staff getting free PPE.

nomas · 13/10/2026 19:40

Her taxes are paying for it.

Admin staff support the work of health service frontline staff. Of all the ways that public money is supposedly ‘wasted’, this is the one to be exercised about - seriously?

Quine0nline · 13/10/2026 19:59

Are you a teacher? We had lots of tool screechers trying to get free vaccines from our GP surgery as they were very very important and deserved it. They said.

JustMerelyHere · 13/10/2026 20:02

Where are many of these admin jobs based?

Where is the highest concentration of sick people in most towns.

Maybe there's a connection? Also many employers so this, as many PP have said, in order to minimise disruption to people using their services and to save money on agency staff to take up the slack.

Maybe you're just jealous but you couldn't be any more unreasonable.

Portmore · 13/10/2026 20:06

I got it for free & im a supermarket worker.
The company offered it to everyone first come first served regardless of 'value' to the business - a few thousand 'vouchers' were available for the company'

It's money well spent if it reduces absence.

Weird that you think there should be a hierarchy - would have thought that school admin staff were as vital as anyone else plus it reduces the spread to other staff & students. If a large proportion of staff are sick at once then the school would be e forced to close which than affects the kids & parents!

NHS admin is half the reason it’s impossible to access care!

Ridiculous. As a clinician in an NHS service I can safely say the admin team are the reason it is possible to access care. They often hold everything together and keep it running. The workload without them would become impossible.

vickylou78 · 13/10/2026 20:07

Even admin staff going off sick would cause major issues with staffing and is much cheaper to pay for free vaccination than to pay people to be off sick for 2 weeks with flu!!

vickylou78 · 13/10/2026 20:09

thisisjustridiculous · 13/10/2026 17:31

That’s different, teachers are essential.

What are you on about? How are medical admin staff not essential?

Lifeomars · 13/10/2026 20:11

You do realise that:

  1. while some admin staff do not have patient contact they often work in a clinical environment such as a hospital so it makes sense for them not to be bringing the flu virus onto the premises
  2. When the winter pressure really start to bite the NHS will need its admin staff to be fit, well and in work.
pimplebum · 13/10/2026 20:12

Wow!!!. ! How tight and mean are you !!!

OP will be whining that they get paid, how very dare they expect a salary !

Wowsers, attention seeking much OP....

Oh, honey, come back to this thread when you find out they get full sick pay 🥰

AllStarBySmashMouth · 13/10/2026 20:17

My employer pays for mine and I work from home lol.

Anyahyacinth · 13/10/2026 20:18

Why advocate for less OP …why not argue everyone who wants it could have it for free?

Always want others to have less than more people having more 🤦‍♀️
