Is sending nice buns into school showing off?

Possibly very much overthinking here, but it is my daughters birthday on Wednesday (turning 9) her class normally take a sweet treat/cake in on on their birthdays, this is fine with the parents and no one has allergies (know this from several parties). I love baking but never really do it much, last year I made and took in some cupcakes, I'm a home baker but can turn out a decent cupcake, planning to do it this year again but my husband has said that I shouldn't, that it is very much attention seeking and very 'look at me" This isn't my intention at all, I have most of the ingrediants in the cupboard all ready, it'll only cost me about £4 to make 36 buns, I only have to buy the butter and some icing sugar. I have boxes already that I bought in bulk from Temu and tbh I just like baking. But I would hate to be talked about by any of the mum's, or for people to think that I'm attempting to show off, parents would see them as they are normally given out last thing. Should I just buy some shop bought cake or buns, which would cost me more money and not be as nice? I'm inclined to think that my husband is been harsh, they will look nice when done, but I reckon people will still be able to tell that they are homemade and that I haven't spent loads of money buying them. Thanks.

As PP have mentioned, our school will only allow food that's sealed and comes with an ingredient/allergen list. We even once tried to bring in the half of a large shop-bought cake we had left over from the party the day before and they couldn't accept it.
Not sure if your school might have a similar policy but it's worth checking as I'd be gutted if I'd baked three dozen cakes and got turned away!!

I don’t know if this is true - having seen some people’s houses I avoid home made unless I know the person and their cleanliness really well.

Having seen what goes on in many factories and restaurant kitchens, home made is probably safer to eat.

Anyone who thinks shop bought food is ‘clean’ has clearly never worked in hospitality or a factory 😬

This lol. Ive worked in both and honestly people should appreciate home baked stuff more

I never thought twice about stuff like this until I started reading Mumsnet! I and my kids have survived many years of PTA cakes stalls, church coffee mornings and the like with no ill effects.

I suppose I tend to assume that people who can be bothered to go to the trouble of baking some nice cakes will also bother to take basic hygiene precautions.

ETA: not showing off, ignore your grumpy husband and go for it!

They’re just cupcakes, where I live that would not make you anything like the most exciting baker at school!! I would way rather my kid ate something homemade than some store bought UPF shit.

Adhering to basic hygiene? I can live with that 😀

You think shop bought is more hygienic? I worked in a bakery so my eyes are well and truly open. Home-made all the way. As a PP said, better one pair of hands than 20!

Realistically what does your husband know about what people at school think? Most husbands don't have a bloody clue about this sort of thing, they are oblivious to birthdays/ world book day, spontaneous egypt/victorian/evacuee costumes, different coloured t shirts for sports day etc etc etc. Do what you want.

YABU to call them buns.

This is a bun. (Well, two buns...)

I agree. I love buns but not cakes.
Anyway - your husband is weird. Make the cakes and send them in.

I worked at a school years ago, helped kids prepare food one lesson, it was a sweet treat to be shared at home. Dear God. I couldn't believe how lax the teacher was, luckily for the people who were eating these treats I had wipes with me and hair ties and prevented some disgusting habits from going on during that process. Yes, they were kids, but it really made me reconsider what happens in the making of home made food.

From that day on I have never, ever eaten anything not properly prepared by a source which is held to health code standards, or by someone I know personally and well,

Edited

I’d suggest never eating in a restaurant then!

Your husband is being daft!

I've taken homemade treats for years to my DC schools(I have 5DC)and everyone's always really loved them and appreciated them, please don't let your husband put you off.
