I am sick of the reform rhetoric spreading into every little thing that happens

In my town, three things have happened in the last week:

  1. a border force boat was spotted refuelling in the harbour
  2. a coach was seen at Sainsbury’s petrol station
  3. some Asian men were seen at a local hotel

Now each of these things have innocent explanations:

  1. the boat was quite literally just refuelling
  2. it was a school coach at a petrol station
  3. theyre a Bollywood film crew filming at a local beach. Said local beach is closed and they’re filming overnight, so needed somewhere to stay.

But of course, the racist reform nuts have decided that the border force is “shipping” migrants straight to us and bussing them in (it’s either one or the other surely? They’re either delivering them by boat or coach 🙄) and people are now making threats against the general manager of the hotel where the film crew have been staying. Apparently people have been going into the hotel and questioning the manager about the people staying there and what they’re doing there.

im sick of it. Never mind the fact that it would be impossible for the small boats to get across the channel to us, these are all innocent things. But the reform rhetoric has spread to the point that people who aren’t white can’t even stay in a hotel without people getting angry and threatening violence. It’s disgusting.

Don’t know if you’d be interested in hearing this, but where I am (in the US) the UK is fast gaining a reputation not for being “taken over by islamists” as Trump and musk et al would have us believe, but for narrow-minded racist Tommy Robinson types who the govt can’t keep under control. Farage is seen as a joke and people (those who know and care enough to ask, ofc) can’t understand why he’s so popular because he’s such an open bigot. I know, rich coming from here, but don’t forget half of the country was rabidly against trump at the last election and a sizeable majority are shaping up to be against him and all this nonsense at the midterms next month! Hopefully America will get rid of Trump and all his Temu Trump followers in the UK will go the same way.

It breaks my heart. I’m so embarrassed to be English when I travel Europe now

Ah more leftist nonsense.

it’s any govts job to protect its borders. It is not doing so and in fact doing the reverse.
I bloody hope reform get in

Protect their borders from a film crew? From a school coach?

Agreed. Literally every problem posted on local social media involves unpleasant references to migrants

eg anyone got a flat to rent? Go to France, get on a boat and you will one immediately

Blaming outsiders for every problem is the oldest story in the book. I get it that a lot of people have serious problems with life’s major issue like housing, health and employment….. but it is the last few governments we should be blaming.

It's quite telling that 25% of people on here seem to think it's OK to be racist...

Maybe MN has a reputation for allowing racism ? Hence attracting racists and skewing the figure.

I live in a tiny place in the middle of nowhere. It is possibly one of the whitest, most Christian place in the whole country. Yet, the fear is out of control here. It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic

Someone put a post up with a still on the village hellsite of some kids playing knocky nine doors with their faces covered. Everyone jumped to the natural conclusion. Obviously immigrants had dropped off their kids to terrorise the community through the medium of childish pranks. No word on how immigrants had managed to get here given we have no bus route and it’s a long old trog just to knock on a door and run away again. Though kudos to them for putting the hours into realising such a fiendish plan.

I peed myself laughing when it turned out to be the offspring of my well heeled neighbour and their friends from their chi-chi private school.

I reported what was a racist post on a light hearted entertainment thread last week , apparently it was within guidelines or whatever, i re read the post and it definitely had racist and imo homophic intent! I hid the thread and shook my head at HQ

Imupforthat · Today 17:24

Oh and you’re not being unreasonable OP. I am in absolute despair about the direction this country is taking. We are walking into something very dark and what concerns me most is that people don’t seem to realise that hate has this annoying habit of not staying in one place and tends to spread.

What is one group today could be anyone of us tomorrow. It’s a cliche but none of us are safe until we’re all safe.

DebbieSavage · Today 17:31

It's disgusting but its nothing new. English people are the most racist people on the planet, they are always making up derogatory stereotypes about communities and it makes me sick to my stomach. I just think of how much civilisation would have advanced on this planet without us ever existing, cuasing hurt to so many different countries and destroying the planet with the industrial revolution. It breaks my heart. 😥

My best friend is Indian and I apologise to her every day for the harm my people have caused. She deserves so much better than me. 😰

YANBU. Its everything now on our local facebook.
It must be very scary if you're non-white I think. If they are demanding to know who and why non-white people are staying at a hotel, how long will it be before they start taking it upon themselves to force their way into hotel rooms to interrogate the occupants or set-up road blocks to pull over cars with non-white people in them?
They are apparently getting training in Northern Ireland, and this is what happened there of course- Catholics forced from their homes, kept out of certain areas, road blocks set-up.

We do have an illegal immigrant problem, no good pretending we don't but it's not the only issue and if it's stopped we will still have many other problems. My dh was reading something about children not being potty trained and he'd been reading some bloke who was saying it was all migrant kids i mean what the fuck? I soon put him right. It's quite scary.

I find it really concerning the direction this Country seems to be heading. I have never before witnessed so much overt racism before, in my life. I find it worrying.

I'm old, so I can remember the National Front having marches in London in the 1970s and there was a lot more "overt racism" then. Racist jokes on tv were commonplace, the race discrimination legislation was still relatively new and being tested in the courts etc. There was a lot more inequality in employment and workers from ethnic minorities, esp Afro-Caribbean minorities, tended to be concentrated in low-paid manual work.

But things feel different now. The NF of the 70s were very much a fringe organisation and had relatively little support. You certainly wouldn't have heard the "respectable" middle classes voicing support for them, but my very MC in-laws and the families of a couple of friends think the EDL have the right idea. One of them goes on a weekly protest against the asylum seekers being accommodated close to their town. They're even getting pissed off with the RNLI, an organisation that has had almost universal support until recently.

There's a lot more support from the right-wing media and there's loads of racists with well-supported YT channels. And the internet and mobile phones have made it much, much easier to (eg) get hundreds of racist scumbags out to protest in Portsmouth or wherever at the drop of a hat.

With a few exceptions, like Brighton and Bristol, the anti-racist movement seems to have been caught napping. "Stand Up To Racism" is all very well, but it lacks the quick response and numbers that the Anti-Nazi League of the late 70s/early 80s had.

I find it really frightening, and it makes me glad I'm old. I'm unlikely to be around for the worst of it. And I hope Burnham manages to keep things together, because I think traditional Labour voters, if they get pissed off with the Labour government, are more likely to switch to Reform than LDs, Greens or Tories.

I am sure a lot of folk around the globe would happily sway a few hurty words for the murderous expressions of racism other countries can throw up.

Neither is acceptable of course. But a country that proudly declares it's nation dish is Chicken Tikka Masala clearly has a complicated relationship with "foreign"

To be fair, a small powerboat carrying migrants landed in Cornwall several weeks ago, so probably not impossible:

Agree it’s just so blatant

i remember a time where seeing a laughing reaction on a sad news story was just somebody who didn’t have their specs on, now it’s 100’s

these tossers blocking roads when dingies land, wtf do they expect it will achieve.

the crossings will slow right down soon but it’s ok they can start moaning that we can’t celebrate Christmas or some other such nonsense

RedThroatedWarbler · Today 18:21

I just read a news article about a migrant ship sinking off Djibouti, with over 100 deaths. 90% or more of the comments were flippant and seeing it as a good thing. Laughing reactions all over the place. Horrific. No sense of humanity or compassion. Overt racism is now openly acceptable again.

Betterbeingdead · Today 18:25

I don't have poisonous Facebook Instagram tok tok any of that ( only watsap with about 20 people in it ) oh I don't watch GB news either unlike my neighbours both sides who swallow everything Nigel says
. I am white British born and bred but I have mixed race relatives whose kids are terrified

Paul2023 · Today 18:39

I don’t believe that the country’s problems are down to migrants and I agree with what was said in original post.

But please don’t think that anyone that votes for Reform is a racist nut job.

Most people quietly go about their day respectfully and quietly.

The only way to resolve issues is to vote at the ballot box.

No it’s not - some random new page on my FB feed with the sad story about the death of a young girl - police not looking for a 3rd party etc

loads of comments about ‘bet it’s the usual suspects’, racist images and ‘what are the police covering up’ oh and one random blaming ‘Liebor’

critical thinking is very lacking

I'm sick of this too. It'll be something completely irrelevant like a missing cat and someone will turn it round to blame it on immigrants somehow.

loulouljh · Today 18:42

I assume you don't have young girls being targetted. Your view would be different if you lived close to undocumented men with teenage daughters.

Ive just read the same. 90% vile comments, mostly just assuming this boat was coming to uk, so you’ve pillocks asking where the RNLI were

on the opposite side though I saw a video of some bloke screaming racist shite at a woman in her car with her kids, he’s been found via his Facebook page/business, I get the feeling he won’t be getting much business from now on.

On my feed the racist thickos clearly couldn’t understand what no third party involvement meant and we’re saying ‘so who was the second party?’ It wasn’t just one person and I thought someone was actually making a (bad) joke at first. Even then the thickos were saying ‘I bet the second party is ‘one of them’.

It’s actually scary. There can be threads about flower arranging and someone will turn it into a racist reform rant.
