I’ve noticed, since hitting middle age that not all men but quite a significant proportion of them, are arrogant domineering arseholes. I’m rigorously testing the theory by implementing the following…

Be a woman. Go for a walk, somewhere busy. See a man coming towards you. Keep on walking. Do not move out of the way, and see his confusion when you don’t automatically let him pass.

That’s it. Playing chicken (ish) with the owner of a cock. Care to join me?

Just to add for clarity, this is a totally silent exchange on my part. And isn’t meant to put women or anyone else in a dangerous situation. Just a way of observing the absolutely stunning fucking entitled behaviour and male privilege in even the most basic interactions.

I never have this problem to begin with. Could be a 'you' thing?

Notbuiltforheat · Yesterday 19:43

I didn’t think it was a thing until I tried it. But sadly yes. It’s true. Some menz expect you to get out of the way. I’m finding a correlation between this and them being older, taller and balder than me.

Well if I was walking towards them they wouldn't be expecting me to get out of their way. They'd be getting out of my way.

Agreed

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · Yesterday 19:47

I’ve noticed this for years. And have played cock chicken. And it includes teenagers. Mind you, I’m walking in a city with a great many very wealthy university students, so it could be that.

thatsgotit · Yesterday 19:48

Completely agree. It comes from the same place as manspreading, mansplaining et al.

IDontHateRainbows · Yesterday 19:49

I must play cock chicken all the time without realizing it then as I just walk wherever I want to, usually at a fair pace, and no one expects me to get out of their way.

Hmm youd think so wouldn’t you? But just this morning, I’d parked up and the footpath from the carpark to the high street is a bit narrow and coming towards me was a person who would describe himself as a gentleman. (And I suspect if he lived in spain he’d call himself an ex Pat.) And he clearly expected me to be the one to move. And I didn’t. Didn’t do anything aggressive, I just carried on walking. He gave an annoyed little splutter. Satisfying.

Same here. From a particular school, mostly.

Genuine question : do you have a cock?

I thought this was going to be about a cocklodger's children.

I have witnessed what you are talking about. It actually takes effort to stand your ground. Well done, keep going.

WonderingWanda · Yesterday 19:52

I've always done this, especially when driving, men always seem to think you will automatically give way as a woman.

Yes! When I had a little shopper runaround I despaired at them just pushing through and now that I drive a (work) big black bmw, that doesn’t happen so much Interesting.

No, i have a fanny

IDontHateRainbows · Yesterday 20:22

What's that saying, no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Well, no one can make you get out of the way, or feel you should, without your consent.

TheLastSilverSaint · Yesterday 20:29

This is claim people have making for decades. I don’t think studies back it up though. Apparently, what usually happens when two people walk towards each other, regardless of their sex, is that they both move slightly. That’s the unspoken expectation. So if one of them (in this case the man) moves slightly and the other one (in this case you) doesn’t move at all, then people will often bump arms as they pass each other. That’s why it’s a bump as you pass rather than a head-on collision.

No. Its patriarchy chicken.

Well known phenomenon.

If you didn't think it was a thing, why did you decide to do this? I've never noticed it either or rather I haven't noticed that they're any more likely to do it than women are. Some men are rude; some women are rude.

seahorsessky · Yesterday 20:39

No, lots of young women act this way too (and some middle and older, but predominantly, it's kids and teenagers who seem to push through).
I always stand back for anyone who looks more vulnerable/fragile than me. I know you can't always tell, but people with a stick/pram/who seem to be struggling, and we teach the kids in the family this. But I know more than one man who has been called a chauvinist for giving way/opening a door to a woman).

catspyjamas1 · Yesterday 20:43

Patriarchy chicken! Love this game and play almost daily.

CalamityJane81 · Yesterday 20:45

It’s 100% true. Obviously not all of them but loads of them just keep walking and seem surprised when you collide.

I noticed it when I became a woman of a certain age. When I was young and bouncy, men would part the ways like the Dead Sea.

No I find the opposite these days, men of all ages stand back for me, i see it as a sign that I'm looking old 😔hanging on to the hope that it's just because I've moved from inner city to quieter more rural location with more polite men🤷‍♀️🤣
