How can good looking children have not particularly good looking parents?

Genuine question, just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

DH is very conventionally attractive. His two sisters are also very pretty and both modelled when they were younger. DH has been scouted too but wasn’t interested.

His parents are lovely people, but neither is what you’d call conventionally attractive. Even looking at photos of them when they were younger, you wouldn’t say either was particularly good looking.

I know genetics is a lottery but it seems quite remarkable that all three children turned out good looking. They’re all genetically related. Has anyone else come across this?

Didn’t someone try to a good looking master race but not all children made the mark because genetics can’t be controlled.

Then there’s Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz, producing Zoe. That’s just a gorgeous family.

DS1 is a nice looking lad, I was asked if I’d considered him modelling as a child (hell no) and he’s grown up into a handsome man. Neither me or his Dad are that good looking, we’re not ugly , but definitely nothing special. He’s a definite mix of us both though and I guess has got the best bits of each of us

To be fair I think Cruz and Romeo are attractive and they look more like Victoria
David has that doughy, white, Celtic type in his family- I've seen pics, he's the outlier!
So I think that's more where Brooklyn and Harper's genes come from- not that they're awful looking, just average.
I say all this as a squat, doughy Celt myself.

BB is the best looking out of all 4 kids IMO, the other 2 brothers have unusually small heads, with the youngest being most unfortunate looking.

The daughter is plain but has clearly undergone a glow up with the blonde hair etc.

Odd family, but it was David with the looks, that didn't translate well with VB's genes through their kids.

I agree that Kaia looks more like her dad & doesn’t have Cindy’s X factor

I think Brooklyn is the best looking boy too, he may still grow into his looks a bit like his dad did.

I think Romeo was briefly attractive in his early teens. The others are as plain as the day is long, like their mum.

Well I'm not going to argue about Johnny! I have not seen him in the flesh but have frequently mentioned him on celebrity crush threads.

He just has tremendous appeal.

I'm not sure Vanessa is any more beautiful than her daughter is she?

In reality, I think I'd find Johnny disappointingly short in real life? But let's not spoil the fantasy!

You see I see Victoria as the one with any looks the children may have.

David is not my cup of tea at ALL.

And I agree with PP who said Brooklyn probably got the best of the looks. He was really a cutie as a baby.

ETA I don't think you could call any of the children plain. Not saying they are devastatingly attractive but they aren't "plain."

Both parents were good looking, Katie was naturally beautiful before all the surgery.
Princess is stunning. A good mix of both of them.

Yep David was a bit dorky when younger early 20s, then got better looking.

I’ve seen David Beckham in real life in the 00s. I never was into him but he was very, very good looking in the flesh. Without sounding like Hannibal Lector he had beautiful skin, the colour, the eveness, etc.

My husband and I are average in terms of attractiveness. I have one friend in repeated disbelief as to how we’ve bred two such beautiful kids.

But my daughter facially looks the spitting image of me as a kid except for her build (long and lean like her dad) and her eyes (beautiful like her dad although I would argue mine are also quite nice).

Our son has my build, dad’s eyes.

Unfortunately for both children they’ve inherited my mop of uncontrollable hair.

You made assumptions about the OP that were not true in the very least. Just sad.

It's quite interesting to see that others think Cruz and Romeo are not good looking and that it's Brooklyn who has the looks. Just shows the subjectivity involved sometimes.
I was pretty in my youth and I was lucky that being short wasn't such a thing, I feel that it is now. Also the aesthetic was a bit more towards conventionally pretty rather than striking and good jawline- I've definitely never had that.
I've lost my looks. As I said before, I'm Celtic and doughy, and we do not age well!
So I tend to rate those well supplied with melanin and jawlines above my own phenotype (if that's the right term).

DH and I are both ordinary looking - not hideous but nothing to write home about. DD was a very pretty small child, it's too soon to say what will happen to her as an adult (currently in a gawky, spotty teenage phase).

I was just thinking of this funnily enough: a male friend of mine is attractive, not model-like but very attractive; his wife is very pretty. Their eldest daughter, 21, looks exactly like her father but as a female is very unusual looking & not conventionally attractive: the youngest daughter, 18, is drop-dead, head-turningly beautiful, like her mother but on steroids. Genetics are wild.

Lol, what are you even talking about? I was recently looking through my grandmother's wedding album and she'd be 101 now and the photographs were all perfectly good quality, as are my parents' wedding photos from the early 80s. What, do you genuinely think everyone was wandering around looking like a blurry potato until digital cameras came along? Film photography was perfectly capable of producing beautiful, sharp photographs decades before the 90s. It's genuinely hilarious how some people talk about the 1990s as though we were still waiting for electricity to be invented. You can absolutely tell whether someone was attractive in an old photograph.

Though have seen some photo since that suggest the kids did have some moments so may be images we actually get shown- but seen it described as the mountbatten aging like milk effect.

I do think some people grow into their looks - my Mum looked better old though when young she had a stunning figure her face looked odd- Princess Ann I think has - and the actor who played the orginal bones in StarTrek seemed to age into his face better.

My siblings look nothing alike - but both look like me - one same colour other same face shape features. My own DC - everyone remarks on how alike they look.

It works the other way too. I know a couple who are undeniably attractive. Their oldest daughter is.....shall we just say 'plain'

You see it the other way too. Very conventionally attractive parents having less attractive kids.
