Feeling let down

I'm not working at the moment for various personal and family reasons that I won't go into too much here, but I used to be very capable, ran my own business, have a wide variety of transferable skills and really need to get back into the workforce for financial reasons as well as my own self-esteem.

I caught up with a friend two weeks ago and she mentioned some jobs coming up at her office, which isn't far from me. She said she wasn't sure whether they had already filled the roles, but would definitely ask. Two weeks later... nothing. I have sent her a Whatsapp to ask what is happening.. she has been online every day at regular intervals and not even bothered to read my messages.

I've checked the company website and the four jobs are still advertised. I have around one more week to apply.

I feel a little bit put out and let down. I know she has some mental health issues but then she knows me really well (20 years), she knows how much I need to get back into work and she even said I will definitely enquire for you.

Anyway, just whining and feeling let down.... by another human.. again.. sigh...

I apologise, I did not know. It just came over a bit wet, that's all.

It was the way she insisted she would ask for me about the positions, salary, if they had been filled already. All the detail and then nothing.... and ignoring my messages about it all.

Maybe I'm just expecting too much from my friendships? If the shoe had been on the other foot, then I would have made sure I'd got back to her by now. In reality, two of the roles expire this weekend. It just feels very inconsiderate.

Maybe someone reminded her that recommending someone for a job in any way often backfires on you.

Fingers crossed you find a suitable job soon. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Is she the type of person who always offers help/things but doesn't follow-through with it? I know a few people who say oh I have that, I'll get it to you, then crickets.

Some people just like to sound helpful without any actual action or considering that they are causing issues for other people.

I absolutely hated it when people asked me about jobs where I worked (large local employer). Knowing someone and working with them is a different kettle of fish and I wouldn't know whether or not they'd be a good fit. I only once recommend someone and they weren't appointed. Why I do not know but perhaps the boss disliked me!

I think so, this has happened before with a couple of other things, I know she has or had depression and anxiety as well and has had a lot of time off work for a number of different reasons, like two months on and off over the past year, but all justified, so I wonder if that is part of her not getting back to me.

I've applied for the jobs and she still hasn't even read my message just asking how she's doing. Not asking her anything what she offered to do in the first place.

Maybe it's a lesson in not trusting people as much as I do. Or not relying on people to keep their word either way. Whatever her reasons are, it's making me back off a bit. She told me she had friends coming to stay this weekend. She must be busy with them.

Time to take my Dad's words to heart about being more self-reliant.
