To wish that Mumsnet would hide upsetting thread titles?

Just that, really. I realise we have the option to hide individual threads, but not when they are trending. For instance, there is one on a televised execution today that pops up every single time I open the app on my phone. Why can't those kind of threads be hidden inside a board of their own? Not everyone who visits Mumsnet wants to be faced with a title like that when they aren't expecting it.

No. Unless they are profoundly offensive using actual slurs they should be allowed to stand.

If you can’t manage to be upset you need to avoid the internet.

Bikagal · 09/10/2026 06:05

I think what OP actually meant was if she chooses to hide a thread it should be hidden for her completely and not show up in trending topics. Is that right? @WaryHiker

It wouldn’t make sense for them to be saying all threads she finds upsetting should be hidden from everyone.

That's exactly what I meant, thanks. I don't care how anyone else wants to curate their feed.

I just tested this.

Followed the top trending headline to the story and pressed Hide.

Went to another story.

The top trending story headline is still visible in Trending.

OP is right. There's a bug.

Thanks for understanding what I was talking about.

I feel triggered by the stupidity of this thread and think it should be hidden.

Bikagal · 09/10/2026 06:23

Yeah me too tbh. But maybe there was a glitch and it didn’t work for OP?

If she does mean all sensitive threads should be hidden that’s just silly.

@WaryHiker can you clarify?

Absolutely not hiding any threads at all for anyone else. Just the ability to hide one particular one for myself. I can do that unless it hits trending, at which point I can't. It seems an easy fix and has nothing to do with being a snowflake or being told to get off the internet etc. I'd simply like the option to hide a thread permanently for my own benefit.

OP, you can hide threads even if they’re trending. How you do so depends on what type of platform you’re using but there’s no need for you to keep seeing threads you don’t want to see

As PP, what one person finds offensive another person finds informative. MN do change wording on titles where it is deemed to be inappropriate or highly sensitive but the thread you have mentioned simply states a news headline. I can’t see anything upsetting about that thread title, and it makes it clear whether it’s something I might want to read or avoid.

I can't hide the trending threads on my phone app. Is there a way of doing it that you could tell me?

Yeah exactly, that’s what I thought you meant. It wouldn’t have made sense otherwise - thanks for confirming!

Floatlikeafeather2 · 10/10/2026 08:40

Stopping things happening, like the proposed execution, often begins with something like a small mention on tv or radio, a discussion on social media and so on. How are we meant to change things if we don't know they're happening in the first place because we prefer to turn a blind eye to reality or even worse, know they are happening but don't have the backbone to confront them? If you want to turn your back on all the horrible things going on in the world that's up to you and your conscience but how dare you suggest that you, and people like you, should get to censor what the rest of us may see?

I personally haven’t noticed hidden topics in trending , but as I said upthread if it’s happening maybe a glitch?

Or a tech oversight!

Maybe something to ask MN to sort out.

I can't hide the trending threads on my phone app. Is there a way of doing it that you could tell me?

You do it by finding the thread in “trending”.

so on the bottom left of screen click “active”, then at the top of the page there’s a menu running left to right. The second one should be “trending”. Click on that, then scroll down until you find the thread you want to hide. You’ll see … on the right of the thread title. Click on that and then you’ll see the option to hide. I have added a screenshot but it may take a while to appear.

Oh sorry, just realised you said app. I don’t use the app, I just use safari on my iPhone. But I’m sure someone else will be able to tell you how to do it on the app

Ebsalami · 10/10/2026 08:48

You’re being a ridiculous snowflake. If you can’t cope with seeing even headlines about discussions of difficult topics, you need to stay off the internet and avoid all tv and radio news.

SomethingYum · 10/10/2026 08:57

IMO people should grow a thicker skin if they want to participate in life. But unfortunately they don’t have to, there’s so much censorship everywhere online it’s basically a pointless medium as there’s no freedom of expression. They keep deleting comments with no explanation “due to their talk guidelines”. My comments that have been deleted were deleted unfairly, it’s my opinion and I have a right to it. I might just stop talking and snowflakes can have this platform to themselves to talk about nothing of any importance ever

Sartre · 10/10/2026 08:58

They should hide distressing content on news apps too incase it upsets someone.

You mean the stupidity of the responders who still haven’t worked out that the OP is reporting an actual bug?

Bubstar · 10/10/2026 09:38

Dear God, that upsets you? The real world outside the cushy western world is a mean, mean world. Get a grip and stop being a snowflake.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 10/10/2026 09:42

I am finding this thread interesting within the context of 'trigger warnings' on book covers. If we take everything in this thread - people are responsible for stopping reading if something upsets them; people shouldn't be 'pandered to', build resilience etc - then how does this translate to books, where authors have to basically plaster the entire plot on the cover just in case someone is triggered by something they might read?

Is there a difference? How can anyone know what might trigger someone? And how can we sensitively allude to it (either in a warning on a book cover or in a thread title) without making it obvious?

You’ve read the thread and you STILL don’t understand that OP is reporting a simple bug?

I'm interested in the context, considering the remarks on the thread, not so much the OP.

Because I have, and it isn’t.

But nobody, including the OP, is calling for censorship. The whole thread is just a misunderstanding of a bug report.

battairzeedurgzome · 10/10/2026 09:49

If you are easily upset, Mumsnet may not be the ideal recreational reading for you. Have you considered taking out a subscription to a reliably feelgood publication such as Hello! Magazine or Vogue, or stocking up on Mills and Boon novels?

DoctorDr · 10/10/2026 09:50

The largest ever meta analysis of trigger warnings:

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/21677026231186625

"The analysis suggests that they are fruitless and reliably increase anticipatory anxiety. Although many questions warrant further investigation, trigger warnings should not be used as a mental-health tool"

HeddaGarbled · 10/10/2026 09:50

My view on this is that Mumsnet isn’t compulsory: it’s a leisure activity that you choose to engage in.

The topic you mention is big current news. Lots of big current news is upsetting.

It’ll be off ‘Trending’ in a day or so. I think you should just go and read a book or something and come back in a couple of days (though there’ll be something else by then).
