To wish that Mumsnet would hide upsetting thread titles?

Just that, really. I realise we have the option to hide individual threads, but not when they are trending. For instance, there is one on a televised execution today that pops up every single time I open the app on my phone. Why can't those kind of threads be hidden inside a board of their own? Not everyone who visits Mumsnet wants to be faced with a title like that when they aren't expecting it.

This. Assuming you are an adult.

Yup

Yeah me too tbh. But maybe there was a glitch and it didn’t work for OP?

If she does mean all sensitive threads should be hidden that’s just silly.

@WaryHiker can you clarify?

I think she might mean that, because she said threads like that should be “hidden inside a board of their own” so that people aren’t faced with a title they aren’t expecting.

Somethingsquishy · 09/10/2026 07:12

OP, you can hide threads even if they’re trending. How you do so depends on what type of platform you’re using but there’s no need for you to keep seeing threads you don’t want to see

As PP, what one person finds offensive another person finds informative. MN do change wording on titles where it is deemed to be inappropriate or highly sensitive but the thread you have mentioned simply states a news headline. I can’t see anything upsetting about that thread title, and it makes it clear whether it’s something I might want to read or avoid.

moderate · 09/10/2026 18:28

I just tested this.

Followed the top trending headline to the story and pressed Hide.

Went to another story.

The top trending story headline is still visible in Trending.

OP is right. There's a bug.

TwinklyAmberSloth · 09/10/2026 18:56

YABU. It's a public forum.

If you're that sensitive to just a title about something then public forums are not the place for you.

WaryHiker The thread title alone upsets you?
Maybe the internet isn't for you?

😂

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/10/2026 19:13

Somebody else who hid that thread on the basis of the title could have clicked on your post to be upset that you are talking about the televised execution without any trigger warning.

That's why it's unworkable.

Yello24 · 09/10/2026 05:04

No. You need to get off the internet if you’re that sensitive

This. You’re and adult op.

Wow! What an uncaring load of replies!

Wildgoat · 09/10/2026 19:29

That’s not possible op unless you mean hide threads upsetting to you personally?

OP may not have explained her request very well, but she’s asking for MNHQ to fix a bug in which hidden threads still show under Trending.

Who decides what's sensitive? Sensitive is subjective and personal, how do you decide what's sensitive to some people, all people...? What are the categories of subjects and groups of people that we apply here?
Unworkable, imo.
As other people have said: the internet is possibly not for you.

TeenLifeMum · 09/10/2026 19:40

I think it’s important we know about new and reality so by all means don’t click on upsetting things but denying they’re happening is the worst thing we can do surely?

Firefly1987 · 09/10/2026 19:40

I agree to a point. I mean why the need for trigger warnings anywhere on the internet according to some on here? Why don't the people that are triggered just not go online, I mean it's a forum after all they should expect this stuff, what's the difference?

Child abuse, elder abuse, animal abuse, murder, sexual assault etc. things that would upset 99% of us would be a good start, it's not hard surely.

PrettyLittleRose · 09/10/2026 19:45

It is a bit annoying how, even when you hide a thread, it still shows in Trending. I am not sure that Mumsnet can do much about it though @WaryHiker

SummerAsh · 09/10/2026 05:33

I think you need to look at developing your resilience rather than expecting others to cosset you like you were a 4-year old.

I’m deducing from your thread that you’re an extremely anxious person who struggles with the harsh realities of daily life… Looking at how you move away from that is the way forward… expecting others to wrap you in cotton wool will just make your angst worse.

Edited

Harsh. There's a lot of extremely awful stuff going on at the moment and it's much more 'in your face' than it would have been before social media and constant information.

However, no I don't agree that it should be hidden. I have chosen to avoid the news when things that upset me personally are going on, although mostly I follow it quite closely. I think it's important to not get bogged down in the negative in times like ours, but rather to seek out positive stories or ways to take positive action or just watch and read things that are fun from time to time.

battairzeedurgzome · 09/10/2026 04:04

I don't think you understand how a public discussion forum works.

Of course, I do. But why do the more triggering thread titles have to right in your face the moment you open the app?

Does hiding an individual thread title not also remove it from the "trending" popups? That would certainly be an error worth reporting to mnhq on Site Stuff - if you hide a thread it should stay hidden on all screens.

Obviously it's not possible to have a thread hidden from everyone by default - that would be censorship.

No, it doesn't, and yes, that does seem an oversight. I wouldn't want anything hidden from anyone else, just the ability not to have potentially triggering stuff leap out at me when all I want to do is have a quick browse.

No. You need to get off the internet if you’re that sensitive

Or Mumsnet could add a few lines of code so that anyone who wanted to hide a particular thread title was able to do so. Everyone else would be free to organise their feed in any way they wanted to.

Do you know that you can hide things? Obviously you still have to see it the first time. But then click on the three dots next to it and hide it.

You can hide a thread unless it's on trending. That's the feature I'd like them to add.

You're deducing wrong, although that's the kind of answer I expected, given how AIBU goes these days.

Just hide it simples !

I do hide the individual threads, but you can't hide it when it's trending.
