To wish that Mumsnet would hide upsetting thread titles?

Just that, really. I realise we have the option to hide individual threads, but not when they are trending. For instance, there is one on a televised execution today that pops up every single time I open the app on my phone. Why can't those kind of threads be hidden inside a board of their own? Not everyone who visits Mumsnet wants to be faced with a title like that when they aren't expecting it.

Who decides what is upsetting or sensitive or not?

battairzeedurgzome · 09/10/2026 04:04

I don't think you understand how a public discussion forum works.

JacquesHarlow · 09/10/2026 04:13

Do you ask Daily Mail and BBC News to hide the headlines on their apps? @WaryHiker

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 09/10/2026 04:15

Does hiding an individual thread title not also remove it from the "trending" popups? That would certainly be an error worth reporting to mnhq on Site Stuff - if you hide a thread it should stay hidden on all screens.

Obviously it's not possible to have a thread hidden from everyone by default - that would be censorship.

ILoveListeningToRainAtNight · 09/10/2026 04:46

Maybe it could be possible to hide based on keywords, but one person's upsetting isn't for another. It would be impossible.

Yello24 · 09/10/2026 05:04

No. You need to get off the internet if you’re that sensitive

HettyTagliatelli · 09/10/2026 05:04

We are all triggered by different things and no one reason for being upset by a thread is more valid than any other. I have hidden all sorts of threads that should be harmless but
which I don’t want to see for my own personal reasons. If MN hid all threads that had the potential to upset someone there would be no talk boards.

ownedbymydogs · 09/10/2026 05:08

Maybe the internet isn’t for you?

cramptramp · 09/10/2026 05:10

No, I don’t wish this would happen. You didn’t ask but YABVU.

MistressMerkin · 09/10/2026 05:18

How on earth do you handle walking past a newspaper stand?

Unfortunately sometimes we see thread titles that we find difficult. If it's really too much for you then perhaps you need to consider whether a discussion forum is the right place to spend time.

Bobbie12345678 · 09/10/2026 05:29

Do you know that you can hide things? Obviously you still have to see it the first time. But then click on the three dots next to it and hide it.

SquirrelGG · 09/10/2026 05:30

If you can't cope with seeing thread titles you deem upsetting then maybe MN isn't the place for you.

HoppingPavlova · 09/10/2026 05:32

??? What if someone is ‘triggered’ by dogs? What if there is a thread title with the word dog. Should that be hidden from everyone? It’s all getting a bit ridiculous. There has to be a certain amount of resilience where someone can just scroll on and be satisfied with that.

SummerAsh · 09/10/2026 05:33

I think you need to look at developing your resilience rather than expecting others to cosset you like you were a 4-year old.

I’m deducing from your thread that you’re an extremely anxious person who struggles with the harsh realities of daily life… Looking at how you move away from that is the way forward… expecting others to wrap you in cotton wool will just make your angst worse.

OpheliaNightingale · 09/10/2026 05:34

We must each take responsibility for our own triggers. Sometimes that means we must sit with uncomfortable feelings. It’s part of the human condition.

Curbedenthusiasm · 09/10/2026 05:37

You are BU OP.

Empress13 · 09/10/2026 05:42

Just hide it simples !

I am sympathetic to your distress. However, the solution isn't for all the systems to change to make life safer for you.The solution is for you to avoid Mumsnet if you are repeatedly suffering distress here. It is, after all, not essential to life in any way. It's just a discussion forum.

maxslice · 09/10/2026 05:54

How can they possibly know which posts will upset and which will not? Any post could trigger anyone. If the subject title seems likely to be upsetting, just don’t read it.

XenaSharples · 09/10/2026 06:00

Nope.

Fiftyandme · 09/10/2026 06:03

Who gets to decide what’s upsetting or sensitive.

you’re an adult - scroll on by.

Bikagal · 09/10/2026 06:05

I think what OP actually meant was if she chooses to hide a thread it should be hidden for her completely and not show up in trending topics. Is that right? @WaryHiker

It wouldn’t make sense for them to be saying all threads she finds upsetting should be hidden from everyone.

But that is what happens. I’ve hidden threads before and never seen them again.

Yeah me too tbh. But maybe there was a glitch and it didn’t work for OP?

If she does mean all sensitive threads should be hidden that’s just silly.

@WaryHiker can you clarify?

This. Assuming you are an adult.
