Feather duvet - AIBU to bin it ?

I’ve got a king size feather duvet . Had it approx 4 yrs .
It’s never been cleaned as it doesn’t fit in my washing machine.
How grim is it ? How do you clean yours or do you not bother ?

AIBU - I should throw it away and buy a new one as it will be gross and crawling with bugs

AINBU - I should wash it in the bath and wait forever for it to dry !

Service wash at the launderette once a year. Not cheap but better than binning a perfectly good duvet and buying a new one.

Once a YEAR?! You're suppose to hang them out at least weekly!

Says who?

Ai says 4 times a year. More often only if items your choice.

so where have you got this rule that you need to do it weekly?

You hang out all the duvets in your house weekly?

I’d imagine sweat etc seeps through the cover .

i put pillow protectors on my pillows for this reason . Maybe i could buy a duvet protector that would go under the cover ?

Really, how germ ridden is the duvet likely to be unless you’ve had it for years. I’m sure you change your bed linen regularly and are clean going to bed. A regular airing outside should be fine unless you spilt something on it and if you’re really worried about the duvet getting contaminated, use a top sheet on your bed to give an extra barrier.

I have taken it to the laundrette or they will pick up and deliver back for less than £20.

Last time I washed and tumbled it in my friends machines as she has 11kg!

Out of interest, what do you think horses sleep on?

”horse bedding” is straw/shavings? No one’s washing those 🤣

I would vote bin the feather duvet regardless. I ditched mine cos I got fed up of being stuck and scratched by pesky sticky out sharp feathers. Microfibre all the way.

You’re right … I was picturing a horse in a giant dog bed but that doesn’t happen does it 😂

Landfill should be a total last resort. If you’re not up for cleaning it then an animal rescue or charity shop would have it.

Charity shops don’t take duvets. A lot don’t take bed linen at all these days either

Lock it in the utility room with a horse-flap and it’s giant bed at night 🤣

no, they have stables. With straw and hay you have to muck out. And quite a lot of the time they just sleep….in a field 😲.

horse bedding 🤣

They took my bedding recently. It was brushed cotton and they could tell was gently used and the set was complete.

I never dump things at charity shops, I let them choose what they want and take the rest away.

Does it even need a service wash? We use the largest machine in the launderette at £8.

I've never washed or hung out a duvet in my life, I'm obviously cough not long for this world cough. Oh, it's getting dark...

I have ocd about contamination and I’m freaking out now about these duvet bugs ! What bugs people ?!

No bugs. They're talking about dust mites. No danger of contamination whatsoever, just of sneezing a bit if somebody is actually allergic.

Chicken-y? Why?

I put ‘pet enzyme cleaner’ and ‘chickeny’ together and came up with the poster having pet chickens who sleep on her bed.

Waitingfordoggo · 09/10/2026 16:50

I’m going to be unhelpful and say that this is why I bought a large capacity washing machine (11kg) and a synthetic duvet. It gets washed once or twice a year and aired in between times.

I too was imagining live chickens as opposed to their feathers. I think because there was also mention of horses, which often leads of anything and anyone they come into contact with ending up with a slight whiff of horse.

Waitingfordoggo · 09/10/2026 17:20

When our teenagers‘ bedrooms are very messy, there is a fragrance which OH and I describe as ‘rabbity’. There are no rabbits in the house, but it’s just an unfresh smell. Not pungent or awful but not all that nice either.

Dancingintherain09 · 09/10/2026 21:23

I peg mine up spray it with a mix of distilled white vinegar water and teatree and lemongrass essential oils, I then steam it with my hand held steamer.

Landfilll and disposal aside , look up just HOW that feather and down is harvested and respect the creature it came from.
If you choose to use feather&down ( I don;t) then look after it , don't just throw it away like an old rag .

I’ve heard of people washing their horse rugs at the service station machines. But they’re basically just pyjamas aren’t they.
