I’ve got a king size feather duvet . Had it approx 4 yrs .
It’s never been cleaned as it doesn’t fit in my washing machine.
How grim is it ? How do you clean yours or do you not bother ?

AIBU - I should throw it away and buy a new one as it will be gross and crawling with bugs

AINBU - I should wash it in the bath and wait forever for it to dry !

I’ve washed mine in the bath before on a very warm day , it was disgusting the colour of the water ! I haven’t done it for ages . Trying not think about it as weather awful now!

Yet you don’t worry about 4 years worth of filth and bugs against your skin every night?

What bugs?!

benandholli · 08/10/2026 21:02

I have ocd about contamination and I’m freaking out now about these duvet bugs ! What bugs people ?!

What bugs?!

Surely thats what duvet covers are for

Johntaylorschin · 08/10/2026 21:02

We have Mr Duvet, you leave your duvet in a bag in your porch or on your doorstep, he comes round, picks it up, takes it to the launderette and brings it back next day all clean and dry, costs £20.

Stinkybooks · 08/10/2026 21:03

If you decide to replace it choose one you can easily wash and dry. Problem solved! I wash mine once a year.

OhHobnobs · 08/10/2026 21:06

As soon as the summer duvet comes out, late spring ish, I take our thick DF&D cosy winter duvet for an annual trip to the local dry cleaners, where they wash and dry it (rather than dry clean).

Then, come Autumn when the thick cosy DF&D duvet goes back on the bed, the summer duvet gets the same cleaning treatment.

I get our pillows done too!

I am not OCD but do find it particularly grim to not wash and clean duvets/pillows regularly.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/10/2026 21:10

I wash it twice a year, I’ve had it 30 years. It’s goose down and would cost about £400 to replace at John Lewis.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t wash it, they are so expensive and literally will last longer than my lifetime

Chicken-y? Why?

I haven’t got a feather duvet (various reasons really) but given that they contain um….. feathers. I presume that after a while they might smell a bit of their origonal owner lol. ie a chicken! 😂
But I genuinely don’t know tbh, I’ve never liked the way feather pillows/duvets.

I’ve never washed a duvet 😬 am I the only one?! I change the cover every 2 weeks religiously but I didn’t realise this was a thing?!

Don’t worry, I rarely wash mine either !!

How does it get that dirty if it’s inside a duvet cover? Surely just the duvet cover needs washing?

Pinkflamingo10 · 08/10/2026 21:16

Bring it to the professional cleaners.

This is why I bought a 9 kilo. Washing machine.
I can just about get away with it without wrecking the machine, though the winter ones make the timing all go to pot as the Washer can't understand what's going on with the weight sometimes 😂
I do them once a season when I change them to Winter/Summer over usually.

They're not from chickens

And yiu don't want to search up the process , but if you do have one , don;t chuck it out after 4 years .
What a bloody waste .

I’d imagine sweat etc seeps through the cover .

i put pillow protectors on my pillows for this reason . Maybe i could buy a duvet protector that would go under the cover ?

I wash and dry my king size duvets in a machine at a nearby petrol station. The machines there seem perfectly clean and fresh.

ScottBakula · 08/10/2026 21:24

Whenever a thread like this comes up I wonder how the heck people get their duvets in their washer.
There is not a hope in hell I could get even a very light summer single one in mine .

My ( hollow fiber) ones get washed in the bath and dried over a very sturdy clothes horse in the back yard.

beigetriangle · 08/10/2026 21:24

replace it with 2 singles?

Shoobadadoo · 08/10/2026 21:29

YABU what a waste!!
I wash ours every summer at the laundrette large machine. And then either the dryer there or on our line on a sunny day and shake a few times

Pinkyponkyp · 08/10/2026 21:31

I’ve never washed mine, I can’t think why I would need to unless I spilt something on it. I shower and put clean pjs on before bed, and change my bedding weekly, so can’t think that it could be dirty. I don’t sweat in bed though so would maybe feel differently if I did

Nottodaybob · 08/10/2026 21:32

Keroppi · 08/10/2026 20:41

I only hang mine on the line once a year to air it, never washed or took it to dry cleaners
Sometimes I have sprayed it with pet enzyme cleaner because it smelled too chicken-y

Same. Annual airing.

I obvious regularly wash the duvet cover, and we have a top sheet on as well. I don't see the the need to wash my duvet. I don't wash my mattress and that is probable more grim!

parietal · 08/10/2026 21:35

My feather duvet is probably 50 years old (used to be my grandma’s) and I don’t think it has ever been washed. Clean duvet cover every week.

GildedFrames · 08/10/2026 21:36

I've had mine dry cleaned. I've had it since childhood and I'm now 38. Absolutely no need to get rid of it.

Edited to add: I took it to the dry cleaners. I don't know exactly how they cleaned it!

JennyChawleigh · 08/10/2026 21:38

lechatdhenri · 08/10/2026 20:44

Also not a duvet washer, I thought that’s what duvet covers were for

I only use mine in the winter so hang it out on a sunny day in the autumn and spring. Never been washed.

It didn’t even occur to me that the feathers came from a chicken - duh! 😂

I was envisioning the pp’s pet chickens curled up in bed with her or some chicken goujon obsession
