Feather duvet - AIBU to bin it ?

I’ve got a king size feather duvet . Had it approx 4 yrs .
It’s never been cleaned as it doesn’t fit in my washing machine.
How grim is it ? How do you clean yours or do you not bother ?

AIBU - I should throw it away and buy a new one as it will be gross and crawling with bugs

AINBU - I should wash it in the bath and wait forever for it to dry !

We have king size feather duvets, a 9 and a 4.5 tog, which are both over 20 years old.

I wash them each once a year.

I can fit them in the washing machine no bother (obviously not both together).

Our local laundrette offers a duvet washing service too.

I’ve washed mine in the bath before on a very warm day , it was disgusting the colour of the water ! I haven’t done it for ages . Trying not think about it as weather awful now!

Me too, big wash on the bath, lots of rinses - and really easy to dry off when get summers like the one we have just had.

Errm, no?? Have you even looked at your link?

Nobody is washing horse bedding in the machines.

Horse rugs yes, they are hairy and poop stained, but I think that's preferable to human poop and/or vomit.

PoliteRoseJoker · 08/10/2026 23:26

I take my superking feather duvet to my local launderette. They do a service wash, and then tumble dry it a bit, hang it up to air for a bit, another spin in the tumble dryer, more airing etc. It takes 3-4 days. The first time I took it in, he explained this is what they do because it's difficult to get the feathers completely dry in the tumble dryer alone. Costs £26 (London).

Yes, of course I did. I posted it because I don't believe anyone is washing horse bedding in the machines.

I used to work in a dry cleaner and a feather/down duvet would not have been dry cleaned. We’d wash it in water and tumble dry it, because that’s cleaner. What does the label say is my first question! But I do think a duvet should be washed now and again and am fretting about my lovely lovely wool duvet that I suspect is too heavy when wet for even my communal laundry machines.

@banivani After reading your comments about the wool duvet I wondered about my own!

Apparently…’wool is naturally self-cleaning, antibacterial, and odour-resistant, it rarely needs full washing and is best maintained by regular airing and using a protective cover’.

So that’s good to know!

EBearhug · 09/10/2026 00:05

I cab put my summer duvet in the machine, but the winter one has to ho to the dry cleaner. When I remember, so probably about once every 4 years....

Once a YEAR?! You're suppose to hang them out at least weekly!

You think you need to hang your duvet out weekly? Why?

We have 1.5 and 4.5 tog KS duvets and they both fit in the washing machine and are washed and line dried in good weather, probably a few times a year.

Tiggy321 · 09/10/2026 03:42

Launderette yearly . Tumble dry. And then hang outside on a hot day to ensure 100% dry. Even with duvet covers I think you should wash duvets. They come up perfectly after being washed

mybiggreenfrog · 09/10/2026 04:09

I take ours to the launderette.

clamshell24 · 09/10/2026 06:07

Had ours over 30 years. Never been cleaned. We’re fine.

muddyford · 09/10/2026 06:35

I used to get mine cleaned every few years but realised it was actually cheaper to buy new. I bought a 4.5+9 down kingsize duvet, brand new John Lewis, on eBay for £60.

Do you not worry about what’s been washed in those laundrette machines though - like the ones at petrol stations ? I’ve heard people use them for horse bedding !

Yes, horsey people do use them for horse bedding if u mean the rugs they wear to keep warm. Not sure what horrors u think end up in the machine though for the next person?? You wont die!

Aren't you bothered about the environmental impact? Feather duvets last decades, my parents have had theirs probably 50 years. Ive had mine easily 12.

I dry tumble dry all my wool blankets including the cashmere one, I have a clothing moth
problem and dry tumbling every couple of weeks dehydrates and kills everything without harming the wool It must be dry already. I even dry tumble all my woollen clothing.

Take it to a laundrette wash on cold

Horse bedding?! Maybe horse rugs, but they’re cleaned out regularly. Very little difference between people washing dog beds in their machine and then washing their clothes.

I put mine over the bannister every time I change the bedding, but only on the line once or twice a year

Fidgety31 · 08/10/2026 20:37

I’d be worried about the chemicals though from dry cleaning

I understood when you take them to a dry cleaners, they do actually wash them rather than clean them chemically. That's what I was told years ago when I took mine. The problem was that it actually cost as much as replacing them would have done.

I don't know why you would think they'd be crawling with "bugs" unless you generally have a problem in your house.

WokeUpEarlyWalkedTheDog · 09/10/2026 10:05

Blimey. I change my bedding weekly but this thread … washing duvets?! Hanging them out weekly?!

I’m clearly a slattern!

Daftypants · 09/10/2026 10:34

I wash all our duvets at the end of the season and replace with warmer winter ones at some point late October, so you’re right in thinking it’ll need a wash .
i air ours out whenever I change the beds too
Large capacity machine and a very long tumble dry or else all the feathers will clump .
we had feather duvets once but they were a lot of trouble and I developed allergies so got different for our bed

Out of interest, what do you think horses sleep on?

”horse bedding” is straw/shavings? No one’s washing those 🤣

I would vote bin the feather duvet regardless. I ditched mine cos I got fed up of being stuck and scratched by pesky sticky out sharp feathers. Microfibre all the way.

@unimog , I posted the link to the bedding because of OP's post.

Who hangs their duvet out every week to air???? And how can you do that during the winter when it rains all the time?
