Feather duvet - AIBU to bin it ?

Fidgety31 · 08/10/2026 20:32

I’ve got a king size feather duvet . Had it approx 4 yrs .
It’s never been cleaned as it doesn’t fit in my washing machine.
How grim is it ? How do you clean yours or do you not bother ?

AIBU - I should throw it away and buy a new one as it will be gross and crawling with bugs

AINBU - I should wash it in the bath and wait forever for it to dry !

I take mine to the dry cleaners. But it’s washed not dry cleaned. I’ve washed them before in the machine or in a big tub in the summer.
My parents have a 50 year old feather duvet and they just stuff it in the washer once every summer. And line and tumble dry.

bababamama · 08/10/2026 21:48

Yadnu to throw it out because feather duvets are horrible things, for starters I’m allergic to feathers!

SquirrelGG · 08/10/2026 21:48

I've never washed a duvet in my life. They get aired a couple of times a year on the clothes line. I'm rarely ever ill, what do you think is going to happen to you?

Lmnop22 · 08/10/2026 21:40

It didn’t even occur to me that the feathers came from a chicken - duh! 😂

I was envisioning the pp’s pet chickens curled up in bed with her or some chicken goujon obsession

They are usually goose

joytotheknitter · 08/10/2026 21:48

Take it to be properly washed by a laundry service. They will have big enough machines so that it’s thoroughly washed and completely dried. Worth the £30 twice a year.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/10/2026 21:50

You’re being weird. Just clean it.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/10/2026 21:51

Is it that you just love throwing things away and buying new things? Are you looking for validation for that choice?

TheFishFish · 08/10/2026 21:53

Fidgety31 · 08/10/2026 20:38

Do you not worry about what’s been washed in those laundrette machines though - like the ones at petrol stations ? I’ve heard people use them for horse bedding !

Here's the thing though - you can have a wee check of the machine to see if it's clean before you use it.

Whenever a thread like this comes up I wonder how the heck people get their duvets in their washer.
There is not a hope in hell I could get even a very light summer single one in mine .

My ( hollow fiber) ones get washed in the bath and dried over a very sturdy clothes horse in the back yard.

Big washing machines! I've just bought a 10kg washing machine because I wanted a bigger one than the 7kg one I currently have (that struggles with blankets and towels.) It's lasted two years of constant use, but I haven't attempted to wash my single duvet in there because I wasn't sure it would fit.

Chocolatefreak · 08/10/2026 21:56

Take it to a launderette where the machines are bigger and tumble dry it afterwards, or to a dry-cleaners and ask them to do a water (not dry-clean) wash. I'm sure you could phone your local one and ask if they do it beforehand.

Jk987 · 08/10/2026 22:01

Landfill should be a total last resort. If you’re not up for cleaning it then an animal rescue or charity shop would have it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/10/2026 21:21

They're not from chickens

And yiu don't want to search up the process , but if you do have one , don;t chuck it out after 4 years .
What a bloody waste .

Fair point - google says ducks or geese. Adjacent to chickens.
So I guess the correct phrase would be "it can smell a bit ducky or geesey!" lol.
Either way. Ugh. Not for me.

Instanttiffeecoffee · 08/10/2026 22:09

Yeah you have to wash it because if anyone on Mumsnet comes to stay they will strip your whole bed in the morning and leave the bedding in a heap and see your unwashed duvet 😬

HappyOctober · 08/10/2026 22:09

I just change the covers regularly and air the duvet on the line occasionally (eg every 6 months) when the weather is really dry.

nomas · 08/10/2026 20:43

I’m sure the staff keep them cleaner than people’s washing machines at home.

They really don’t I’m afraid and yes they are used for horse bedding 😬

Wexone · 08/10/2026 22:16

just bring it to a laundrette to wash. my duvet cost nearly 500e ( super king ) it gets washed once or twice a year not a hope will be replacing it soon I expect it to last me a good few years

Put it in the tumble dryer for 60 mins on high nothing will survive that! It should squeeze in.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 08/10/2026 22:28

Keroppi · 08/10/2026 20:41

I only hang mine on the line once a year to air it, never washed or took it to dry cleaners
Sometimes I have sprayed it with pet enzyme cleaner because it smelled too chicken-y

Once a YEAR?! You're suppose to hang them out at least weekly!

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 08/10/2026 20:59

What bugs?!

Dust mites. Apparently in an elderly duvet, a third of the weight is dust mites and their faeces.

This is why I have a nice, washable, wool one.

abracadabra1980 · 08/10/2026 22:33

NancyThompson · 08/10/2026 20:40

Tbf that's why I only buy duvets that can fit in my own machine.

Same-and I wash them with the duvet covers on 🤣

HughManity · 08/10/2026 22:34

If you are at the point of binning it, offer it on a freebie site as feathers are compostable.

RipePeach · 08/10/2026 22:41

Take it to the launderette and put it in for a service wash! It costs around £20 here for my king sized feather duvet. I drop it off and then collect the next day and it comes back beautifully clean and dry.
