Neighbour leaving note on estate agents car put you off buying

We’re currently looking to buy our first home.
Very new to all this so lots to consider but very exciting!
Today I was viewing a house which was mid terrace and all the houses along the terrace have room for one car on the driveway and then just normal road parking.
All was going well with the viewing and the house was looking like a promising contender, when we noticed the neighbour was stood in his driveway glaring through the lounge window and had put a note on estate agents car.
She had parked on the road but was not blocking any driveways etc.
It has instantly put me off the house!
we have two cars so one of us will always be on the road and we regularly have people visiting who drive.
Am I bring too fussy or would this put others off too?

I’ve attached a very badly drawn picture to comply with the parking question rules 😛

100% would not buy this house even for a bargain price

Nearly50omg · 07/10/2026 15:55

Now you know why the people selling are wanting to move!

bababamama · 07/10/2026 15:56

If you need two parking spaces on a daily basis I would be looking for somewhere with 2 off-road parking spaces as a priority, looking for spaces is very annoying.

Tooldforthisshit · 07/10/2026 15:57

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago.
I couldn't find the way into the property. The agent told me to turn round. I did and went the wrong way up the lane. The sign was obscured with a huge bush
Out came the neighbour to have a pop.
I didn't buy it!

What did the note say? 🤷‍♀️

ThatsSoRainbowRhythms · 07/10/2026 15:47

It wasn’t said in a gossipy way.
it was in relation to chains as we’d have to wait for one to rent and one to buy.
my comment was a joke in response to another posters comment.

Yes, I realise that but having seen a number of places that were being sold because of a marriage break up, my experience is that there is always one party that doesn't really want to sell and will use all the delaying tactics they can.

Well if she’s got any sense she’ll park much further away and walk to the property as she’ll never sell it if he does that every time.

That risks the potential buyer parking there and getting the note themselves though!

Ahh I see!
that’s good to know that could also be an issue with buying from people separating, thank you .

I’d knock on the neighbours door and speak to them to get the lay of the land. Note might have said ‘can you move because I have a big delivery coming at 4’ or anything

ChocolateCinderToffee · 07/10/2026 16:04

It would be a kindness to let the vendor and the estate agent know he's doing this.

Well, I don't know why you run two cars for just 2 of you, and are looking at houses with no garages or off-street parking.

I haven’t said there’s only 2 of us, we’re a family of 4 who live in one county and we both work in different counties with no reliable public transport with one child at school and one at nursery in a different town.
And unfortunately where we live is pretty highly priced and a lot of the houses within our budget don’t all have parking for 2 cars.

I’d be bothered @ThatsSoRainbowRhythms but maybe the EA has done this before (“I’ll only be a minute” but over hanging the other drive etc). Maybe do some sneaky research? Park there yourself and walk round the corner (or maybe outside the house the other side)?

BezMark · 07/10/2026 16:10

I think matey will shoot himself in the foot here. He's putting off nice people by being a dick during viewings, and will end up with a neighbour who doesn't mind having a scrap with him. Hell mend him. Better off not being his neighbour OP.

BCBird · 07/10/2026 16:11

Would put me off. If you had visitors I would tell them in advance to park elsewhere if parking was so tight even if the note had not materialised

Think this a good idea.

Probably would put me off, yes. But what did the note say?

Estate and letting agents are gobshites?

Yep, this would put me off almost as much as the glaring neighbour honestly.

When we moved last year we actively avoided the two houses that we knew were being sold due to separation/ divorce, purely because people we knew (more than one couple) had had difficulties with this. Weirdly I’ve just been chatting to someone randomly at a work lunch who is moving, and the same thing is currently happening to them, with the party who stayed in the house delaying and making things very difficult.

Perhaps if one had been our absolute dream house we’d have pressed ahead anyway, but not for just okay as you describe this one.

Yes, when I speak with her again I’ll
let her know that’s why we’ve decided not to go forward with that house.

As other have said it looks like we’ve dodged a bullet with this one for more than just the odd neighbour!
it’s been very useful having other people’s opinions and insights!

Well, I don't know why you run two cars for just 2 of you, and are looking at houses with no garages or off-street parking.

Loads of households need to run one car per adult, if 2 adults then at least 2 cars, so everyone to get to work. 2 cars for 1 house isn’t unreasonable!.

Lots of people can’t afford to buy houses with a garage or off street parking but still need both their cars to get their respective workplaces to pay the mortgage.

trekkiemonster · 07/10/2026 16:35

It would put me off as they are probably the type to cause problems over everything, not just parking.

Cadeaukatze · 07/10/2026 17:01

Netcurtainnelly · 07/10/2026 14:53

No I wouldn't be put off I wanted it. There can be problems anywhere with ppl. You learn to deal with them.

True but if you know in advance it seems daft to ignore the warning signs.

Unless you love the house I'd look elsewhere OP.

TubeScreamer · 07/10/2026 17:04

Wouldn’t even consider buying it after this. They will be a nightmare.

Hellorainyday · 07/10/2026 17:06

My dd didn’t buy a flat recently as an unpleasant woman was shouting ‘Can I help you?’ very loudly from a balcony when we were being shown around the garden. Can’t be doing with the hassle of difficult neighbours. I did tell the estate agent why we were no longer interested.

CampingInTheSnow · 07/10/2026 17:07

We had the same scenario when we were looking to move a few years ago. Parked up outside the house, not blocking anyone in. Neighbour over the road immediately came out shouting at me and saying he wouldn't be able to get his car out of his drive. We politely looked around the house, but we both knew before walking up the driveway that there was no chance of us buying it! People are bloody mad, but thankfully we've always had lovely neighbours.
