Neighbour leaving note on estate agents car put you off buying

We’re currently looking to buy our first home.
Very new to all this so lots to consider but very exciting!
Today I was viewing a house which was mid terrace and all the houses along the terrace have room for one car on the driveway and then just normal road parking.
All was going well with the viewing and the house was looking like a promising contender, when we noticed the neighbour was stood in his driveway glaring through the lounge window and had put a note on estate agents car.
She had parked on the road but was not blocking any driveways etc.
It has instantly put me off the house!
we have two cars so one of us will always be on the road and we regularly have people visiting who drive.
Am I bring too fussy or would this put others off too?

I’ve attached a very badly drawn picture to comply with the parking question rules 😛

While it's true that you would be entitled to park there this is telling you about so much more than parking. You dodged a bullet.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 07/10/2026 14:31

Probably would put me off, yes. But what did the note say?

dontblameme · 07/10/2026 14:31

Hell no, that would put me right off. Lucky you found out now.

Imicola · 07/10/2026 14:32

That would send me running for the hills! No way would i knowingly buy a house next to someone who leaves passive aggressive notes on legally parked cars! Lucky that you saw it really...

CaptainCalm · 07/10/2026 14:32

On the one hand the neighbour sounds daft and you’d want to be the better person, but on the other who wants years of parking and neighbour issues?

Is there lots of on road parking or is it limited? Do you love the house or are there similar ones you also like?

If it were me I’d probably walk away tbh, neighbour problems can be so difficult

Branleuse · 07/10/2026 14:32

That was a stroke of luck to find this out so early

SatinHeart · 07/10/2026 14:34

Yep that would put me right off. Neighbour issues are a massive pain.

MellowSubmarine · 07/10/2026 14:34

I’m assuming the note said something like “don’t park here”? Yes it would put me off.
We only have one car so wouldn’t need to park on the road, but unless I loved the house such a pain in the arse living next door would put me off

MsWicked · 07/10/2026 14:35

A knob next door. I’d definitely ditch this house.

sandycars · 07/10/2026 14:36

Wonder if they are selling in the first place because of that neighbour. People like that will have an issue with everything and it will be draining

sausageth · 07/10/2026 14:36

Yep, it would be a hard no thanks from me.
Bad neighbours can make your life a misery.

Boolabus · 07/10/2026 14:37

Could be a cunning plan of the neighbour to put off potential buyers because their daughter friend cousin etc wants to buy it 😀

ThatsSoRainbowRhythms · 07/10/2026 14:37

@CaptainCalm
house is nice enough.
Wouldn’t need to do an awful lot of work.
It had a nice feel to it, but then I just envisioned neighbour disagreements, and we’d obviously share a garden wall with them
too to add to potential issues!
He had absolutely no issue with staring at us whilst we were stood talking.
we’ve probably dodged a bullet for sure!

@Boolabus
haha yes!
although the EA mentioned marriage break down so maybe one of them paying is the neighbour off as only one of them is looking to buy once their house is sold 🧐🤣

Er yes, it's a no from me!!! I have lived next to someone like this before, (a man on his own,) and he made the lives of DH and I miserable for half the 1.5 years we were there... He was always complaining and whining, and kept attacking my DC and accusing them of being too loud (they weren't!) and throwing their cigarette ends over his fence onto his patio (at the back.)

Cigarette ends?! They were 8-10 years old ! He was a horrible man. He had 2 grandchildren, and had 2 adult DC of his own, yet he seemed to hate children. Unsurprisingly, his DC and grandchildren rarely visited him!

1.5 years we stayed, then we sold up. Sold to another man on his own. This man was loud and a bit huffy. I hope the man next door met his match!

!

vickylou78 · 07/10/2026 14:43

Agree with others that I would avoid!!! Neighbours like this can be very stressful.

Hatty65 · 07/10/2026 14:45

Nope, Dodged a bullet.

You don't want to buy a house where it is abundantly clear that (some of) the neighbours are utter arseholes. It will be nothing but stress.

GloriousGoosebumps · 07/10/2026 14:45

I'd like to know exactly what the note said. The wording would give an indication of his thinking.

Ninetwenty · 07/10/2026 14:48

Yes, that would definitely put me off. The poor vendors though.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 07/10/2026 14:50

I wouldn’t want to live somewhere where I felt on edge. So I’d avoid.

ThatsSoRainbowRhythms · 07/10/2026 14:53

@GloriousGoosebumps

I only caught a glimpse of it as I went to my car and I saw ‘can you move…’
and didn’t see the rest, but I can only assume he wanted her to move the car.
she was there for all of 5mins, we’re viewing standard 3 beds that don’t take long to walk around so she was barely out the car before he rushed out with the note 🤣

No I wouldn't be put off I wanted it. There can be problems anywhere with ppl. You learn to deal with them.

BillieWiper · 07/10/2026 14:54

Yeah that's not a good impression is it. I feel bad for the EA. Imagine having to contend with that?

ThatsSoRainbowRhythms · 07/10/2026 14:55

Yeah I can’t imagine she’ll be looking forward to going back for other viewings.
And the vendors too! I would be so cross if my neighbour ruined a chance to sell!

If they are directly next door to you, I would reconsider the house. Fair enough it may be annoying to see the estate agent coming and going for days but few would actually be so unhinged as to put notes on cars. It points to a larger issue and I can see all sorts of troubles.
I anticipated some parking tension on my road as houses on my side don't have driveways and, obviously, the neighbours on the other side all have more than one car but we just muddle along and play the game of musical chairs every day. Everyone is really respectful about it which is a relief.
